5 COVID-19 CASES IN RED WILLOW COUNTY The Nebraska National Guard held a testing event on May 6, 2020 in McCook hosted by Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) that screened 87 people for COVID-19. An additional testing event is planned for Ogallala on May 8, 2020. The Guard staff at these events are a combination of medical professionals from several different units of the Air and Army National Guard. The testing is done as a drive-thru, with Guardsmen in protective equip-ment and the individuals being tested not leaving their vehicles, which reduces the risk of transmission. The Guardsmen are testing individuals for current COVID-19 infection; it does not tell if someone has antibodies for COVID-19. The results of these tests are still pending; however, an additional confirmed case of COVID-19 has been reported in SWNPHDs district - a male in his 50s in Red Wil-low County, due to direct contact. This brings the total for the health district to 12 confirmed cases. Many of the initial cases are now re-covered. As seen in other areas of the state, when more testing is being done the number of positive cases is expected to go up as well. SWNPHD recommends continuing to follow social distancing guidelines to protect you and the communities around you. Recom-mendations for individuals, families, and communities are listed on swhealth.ne.gov.

TEST NEBRASKA MOBILE SITE Yesterday, at his daily press briefing, Governor Pete Ricketts an-nounced that a Test Nebraska mobile site will be open in Lincoln on Friday and Saturday. Test Nebraska mobile locations have been operating in Grand Island and Omaha since Monday. At this after-noons press event, the Governor also proclaimed this week as Teacher Appreciation Week in Nebraska. Nebraska Department of Education Commissioner Matthew Blomstedt joined the Governor to accept the proclamation on behalf of the states teachers. He also unveiled a new website, www.launchne.com, that will serve as a cen-tral resource for the state’s education system as it looks to the future. The website features protocols and best practices to aid local deci-sion-makers as they ensure continuity of education in their schools.

ATV FATALITY A collision between an ATV and a pickup in rural Gosper County has

resulted in the death of one person. The Gosper County Sheriff’s Of-fice was called to the scene northwest of Holbrook and north of the Furnas-Gosper County line shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The investigation showed that a Yamaha ATV that was ridden by a 17 year old female and a 15 year old female traveling east, en-tered Drive 415 from a private driveway. The ATV was struck by a F250 Ford pickup that was southbound on Drive 415. The accident occurred one-half mile north of Drive 726. The pickup was driven by 48 year old Chad Johnson of rural Cambridge. It has not yet been determined who the driver of the ATV was. The 17 year old female, Allysha Fischer of rural Gosper County was deceased at the scene. The 15 year old female of McCook was transported to Cambridge Hospital and then life flighted to CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

SPORTS For the second consecutive season, Broncos Country will have to

be patient. The Broncos announced their 2020 schedule on Thurs-

day evening, and the team's season-opening game falls at the

very end of the Week 1 slate. Denver will host the AFC finalist

Tennessee Titans in the second game of a "Monday Night Football"

doubleheader on ESPN to wrap up the season's first weekend. The

Broncos' matchup against the Titans is one of three prime-time

games the Broncos are slated to play in 2020. The season opener

is one of Denver's six games against 2019 playoff teams, as the

Broncos also face the Patriots (Week 5), Chiefs (Week 7, Week 13),

Saints (Week 12) and Bills (Week 15). As Drew Lock, Von Miller and

Co. aim to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 sea-

son, they may need to improve upon their 3-3 division record from

2019. Denver should have time for its young offense to jell before

those divisional matchups begin. The Broncos don't play their first

division game until the Week 7 matchup against the Chiefs and

play five of their six division games from Week 10 until the end of

the year.

Creighton’s quartet of incoming freshmen were ranked No. 27

nationally, according to PrepVolleyball.com’s 2020 recruiting class

ratings. The Bluejays signed two in-state standouts, setter Katie

Maser of Grand Island Central Catholic and hitter/libero Megan

Skovsende from Omaha Skutt. Defensive specialist Ellie Bolton

(Lenexa, Kan.) and middle blocker Kiara Reinhardt (Cedarburg,

Wis.) are also part of the class both are top-100 recruits, according

to PrepVolleyball. It’s the fourth time in six years that CU’s

brought in a class ranked inside PrepVolleyball’s top 30. The Jays

had the 10th-best class in 2018 and the 11th-best in 2015.
