SWNPHD TESTING EVENT TODAY & FRIDAY The Nebraska National Guard will conduct two testing events this week hosted by Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD); one in McCook today and another in Ogallala on Friday May 8th. The testing is open to all individuals from the nine-county health district and neighboring Nebraska county residents. No walk-ins will be allowed. All persons interested in being tested must schedule an appointment by calling 308-345-4223. Mass testing is an important strategy to help identify hidden cases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), data has shown that at least 25% of all cases of COVID-19 are asymptomatic, meaning they do not show any symptoms. Asymptomatic carriers may be spreading the disease without knowing it, which is also why wearing a mask in public is important to protect the people around you. NATIONAL NURSES WEEK Governor Pete Ricketts, at his daily press briefing yesterday, thanked CHI Health for swiftly setting up a laboratory to help run coronavirus tests for Nebraskans. Swabs taken at Test Nebraska mobile testing sites will be delivered to the CHI Health lab in Lincoln for analysis. Derek Vance, President of CHI Health St. Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart, joined the Governor to talk about the laboratory. He noted that the lab can run 24/7 with the capacity to process 3,000 tests per day once testing is fully ramped up. Gov. Ricketts also designated May 6-12, 2020 as Na-tional Nurses Week in Nebraska. Additionally, he proclaimed the entire month of May as National Nurses Month in the state. Dr. Kari Wade, President-Elect of the Nebraska Nurses Association, spoke about the vital work being done by nurses throughout the state during the ongoing pan-demic. The Governor also said 123,000 Nebraskans have taken about 153,000 assessments at TestNebraska.com as of this morning. Test Ne-braska mobile testing sites successfully launched in Grand Island and Omaha on Monday. Testing will continue in these communities today.

NATIONAL FOSTER CARE MONTH May is National Foster Care Month in America. In past years, this month would feature planned gatherings all around the country to show sup-port for foster care families. Last year in Nebraska over 150 people met at Dundee Theater in Omaha to watch a pre-screening of the HBO

documentary Foster. With the outbreak of COVID-19, child welfare ad-vocates are getting more creative in how they celebrate National Foster Care Month, while also following social distancing guidelines. Child wel-fare providers like Better Living Counseling Services (BLCS) are showing their appreciation for foster care parents by distributing different gifts

for each week of May. For week one and two, foster care parents will receive gift baskets that have been donated to BLCS, while during week three foster parents will be given an option to receive two hours of cov-erage at their home so the parents can get away for a much-needed mental break or to run errands. Finally, for the fourth week, families will receive gift cards to local eating establishments so they can do a carry-

out dinner for the night.

SPORTS The Nebraska Sports Council (NSC) has announced that the Corn-

husker State Games (CSG) Torch Run will be conducted virtually from

June 1-25 across all counties in Nebraska. The new format calls for

runners to register, run a minimum of one mile in a safe location in

their home county, and then post a selfie-photo or -video from their

mile(s) on the CSG Torch Run Facebook page on the day assigned to

their county. It is still free to participate, and all runners receive a

free shirt (while supplies last) and entry into a daily prize drawing.

"Obviously, we made the change to a virtual format for everyone’s

safety, but the bright side is that without a physical route, every

runner in Nebraska has a chance to participate close to home,” NSC

Executive Director Dave Mlnarik said. Those interested in running

can register and find more details, including the updated schedule

and map, at CornhuskerStateGames.com.

Citing family reasons, former Creighton women’s assistant basket-

ball coach and Maywood High School graduate Matt Fritsche is com-

ing back to Nebraska. Fritsche confirmed Tuesday night that he has

been named the athletic director at Grand Island Northwest. He has

spent the past three seasons as the women’s basketball coach at

Hillsdale College, a Division II school in Michigan. "I’m super-

excited about this opportunity," he said. "It was a decision based

on what I thought was best for my family." Before coaching colle-

giately, Fritsche enjoyed great success in the high school ranks. He

was the girls basketball coach at Bellevue West for 10 years, build-

ing the Thunderbirds into a statewide power. He guided the school

to 199 wins and three Class A championships. Fritsche will replace

Mike Sorensen, who will be leaving after five years as the Vikings’

AD to become the principal at Chase County High School.
