Prepare for a safe break on Australian Roads this Christmas

In 2013 there were 28 road related fatalities were recorded during the Christmas period in 2013. 95% of automotive crashes occur due to human error and Christmas is traditionally the worst time of year for road fatalities.

With the Christmas holidays almost upon us, many ‘road-trippers’ are making necessary preparations such as booking accommodation, buying supplies and preparing itineraries. However, often forgotten, but even more important, is preparing one’s car for the long drive ahead.

Accidents on rural roads are also of increasing concern, with over half of Australian road fatalities occurring on rural roads where drivers may be less familiar with the surroundings or in the midst of a long drive.

Just consider the following tips to stay safe on the road this holiday sea-son:

Ø Perform a thorough inspection before you head off on your vacation to make sure everything is in order. If your car is due for a service, dont delay it until after your trip and if required, replace those faulty or worn items with good quality parts.

Ø If you are heading out on a RV holiday, ensure your caravan is prop-erly and securely attached to your vehicle and monitor it through-out your drive to ensure there is no swaying or swerving.

Ø The holiday season can often mean long drives. Be certain to take rest breaks, swap drivers and pull over if you begin to feel drowsy.

Ø Underinflated tyres are more likely to puncture and reduce fuel efficiency, so check your car‘s tyre pressures before you hit the road. A few pounds per square inch either way can make all the difference between a flat tyre and a trouble-free holiday.

Ø Remember, it’s not a race. Drive within the speed limits, don’t take risks and be mindful of others on the road. We all need to work together in order to reduce the road toll.

Hinterlandgrapevine OnlineThe “NUT” Award

It matters little what the monetary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. Sometimes this is because they are not aware that road rules change from time to time. One of our readers suggested that we should have a quick refresher of some of those rules. The most dangerous thing about travelling in a motor vehicle is still the “NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL”.

Council places disaster information all in one place

As part of the Sunshine Coast Council Disaster Management plan a new web site has been created to ensure that there was a co-ordinated point where all relevant local information is in the one area so the public could access it quickly. There will also be a smartphone application to go with this web site.

This new Disaster Hub contains all necessary information one easy-to-use site which is readily available on your home or office computer and on mobile devices. This information will be continually updated as that new information comes to hand so that residents have the latest information about the incident.

This new web site will play an integral role in disaster management on the Sunshine Coast.

Along with other important information the site will provide full details on road closures by council in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Region and roads closed by State Government in Queensland, a list of current warnings for the region provided by both council and the Bureau of Me-teorology along with the location of evacuation centres being used for a particular disaster incident.

To find emergency contacts and all of the above information visit the web site: http://www.disaster.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/

Rotary award renders talkative Tim speechless!

One of the joys of serving in Rotary is to spend our hard earned funds on vital community projects. An-other joy is in giving recognition to others in the community who also give so much of their own time.

On the 3rd December, 2014 one of the invited guest speakers to the regular meetings was explaining to us about the history and steps towards a proposed aquatic centre and hydrotherapy pool.

To his surprise, Tim Bagshaw was then presented a Paul Harris Fellow award for his outstanding contribution to many community projected during the last two decades.

For once Tim was lost for words.

His work in and around Maleny has seen him involved in many youth and health oriented pursuits, including, but certainly not limited to coaching junior AFL and Ozkick, senior cycling, honorary strapper for junior rugby, athletics and netball, committee member Maleny hydrotherapy pool project, fundraising with High School Chap-laincy, and sponsor for the Maleny Show Society.

As well he is a full time joint owner of a physiotherapy clinic in Maple Street, Maleny and sees regular patients for physiotherapy at the Maleny Hospital.

He is most commonly known for his work with Apex over the past 15 years.

Congratulations Tim on your out-standing achievements.

Maleny is lucky to have you as one of ours.

Truthful Jones Tells... us that he was at the Maleny Bowls Club last week just having a small drink when an elderly bloke walks in, sits on a bar stool and begins to cry. Ian the bartender says, “Mate, what’s the matter?”

The old chap says, “I got married two days ago. My bride is twen-ty-five, tall, slim, blonde, intelli-gent and extraordinarily beautiful. She dresses well, is a great cook, spotlessly clean and sensitive to my every wish. Our wants and needs are identical and the sex is incredible”.

Surprised, the Ian asks, “It sounds as though you’re married to the perfect partner. Why are you crying?”

The old bloke replies, “I’ve forgot-ten where I live”!

Moral: Why is it that all the great times in life are just fleet-ing memories and it is always difficult to get those days back in reality.

You could not miss the major news item this week - the taking of hostages at the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Martin Place, Sydney.

Whilst it has been a long time coming this is the first of this type of incident in Australia.

This type of incident is most difficult to stop from happening, if not impossible. It is even more difficult to stop than a well pre-pared team event by professional terrorists as there is no circum-stantial surrounding incidents to bring preparations for the event to the fore.

This type of event is not about the Moslem community in Australia. The majority of Moslems would be as critical of the incident and the perpetrator as are the major-ity of traditional Australian citi-zens.

Whilst there is speculation about the identity of the man holding Sydney to siege and the display of what appeared to be a Moslem Flag with Moslem writing and the reason for this incident it is not a reason to hold all Moslems at fault for the incident.

The Moslem Community also has a duty to report any suspicious activity about members of their communities to the appropriate Australian Authorities and to as-sist those Authorities to attend to that suspicious behaviour.

It is only through this co-opera-tion that this type of incident can be eradicated in Australia.

Let us all work together to make Australia a safer place for all to live.

Maleny Film SocietyThe next screening of the Maleny Film Society will be on SaturdayJanuary 10 th at 7.15 p.m. The Movie will be “Calvary”

CalvaryUS – drama/war – PG - 131mins

In his own confessional, a priest is told he will be killed. He has been chosen as a good man whose death will atone for innocent victims of the Church.

Thus begins a darkly satirical exploration of a contemporary Ireland rocked by loss of confidence in Catholic authority as well as by eco-nomic turbulence. Though toughened by his experience of the world

before entering the Church, the priest has his own demons to wrestle with. As he prepares

to confront his destiny, the morally compro-mised locals he encounters all test his faith in

The craggyfaced Brendan Gleeson, rugged as the coast and country around Sligo,

Fairview Lease signedLocal Sunshine Coast Councillor Ms Jenny McKay has advised that a new five year lease has been signed for the lease of the Sunshine Coast Council owned Pattemore House. The lease has been signed with The Friends of Pattemore House who will preserve the history of the home along with the property. This house has been registered on the Queensland Heri-tage Register since 2003.

The Council reports that the Fairview Management Plan and Garden Restoration and Reconstruction Master Plan which was completed with the assistance of the Friends of Pattemore House will be the guide to the continued plan for the conservation of the property.

Pattermore house which was also known as Fairview will be an important part of the Maleny Precinct and will live closer to the name as it now will actually have views overlooking the Maleny Golf Club fairways.

This project is just one of a number of council owned buildings through-out the council area that are managed by community groups on behalf of that local community.

Ipswich and the whole South East Queensland area.

This was not the first flood though that Brisbane had experienced. Since records were first kept in 1824 there has been a continuing string of floods impacting on Brisbane and surrounding areas.

Each one is worst than the previous one, not because of area innumdated or the heigth of the water, but because of the continuing amount of development and thus the number of buildings and people directly effected. And this will continue to happen as areas become more densely populated and developed.

The highest water levels were in fact 1841 and 1893. In 1931 Brisbane experienced its then most damaging flood as much of the low areas around the river, including all of the Brisbane whalves were flooded.

cops a belting! On Australia Day 2014 as another cyclone is believed to be forming in the Coral Sea thoughts go back to 1974 when cyclone Wanda crossed the Queensland coast and tracked down to South East Queensland dumping about 650mm of rain over the Brisbane and Bremmer River catchments in just over 24 hours on January 25th, 1974.

River systems in this area were already full as above normal rainfall had been experiences since about the previous October.

Much of the area around the Brisbane and Bremmer Rivers was inundated leaving around 7000 homes flooded and about 13000 other buildings damaged to some degree. Damage topped One Billion dollars in 1974 value.

Fourteen people, including two army personnel carrying out rescue operations were killed as a result of the flooding and another 300 were seriously injured.

Whilst the 1974 flood was not as high as the floods of the 1800s it was worse due to Brisbane's rapidly increasing population and spreading development.

Emergency Service Volunteers not in

place in 1974Prior to the 1974 Brisbane flood there was no officially recognised emergency service volunteer groups.

The only disaster management group was a small number of state government personnel who operated as the Civil Defence Group out of Brooks Street, Fortitude Valley and whose sole purpose was to train “air raid wardens” so that they could warn the community should an imminent attacked by an atomic bomb be suspected. This organisation had been set up in 1961 at the heigth of the “cold war”.

This organisation took no part in natural disaster operations. This organisation’s only vehicle was a WW11 Bedford truck and trailer. (See photo above)

The SES as known today was born out of The State Counter DSisaster Act of 1975 which was created because of the needs created by the Brisbane floods and Cyclone Tracy which destroyed Darwin in 1975.

Since those days the State Emergency Service as continued to grow and attends to all manner of disasters and emergencies.

also sufferedBrisbane City Central suffered badly in the flooding of 1974. The Brisbane Riv er broks its banks and water poured into buildings and basements throughout the city centre. The photo below shows the famous Festival Hall in Charlotte Street, Brisbane City. Many areas that were not directly on the

banks of the river also flooded due to rising water backflowing through storm water drains, Yeronga, Tennyson and Rocklea areas were prime examples of this.

An example of this was when a number of police vehicles were parked near The Corso, Yeronga whilst the officers were evacuating people from some distance away and when they returned to their cars they were underwater even though they were totally surrounded by highground.

Community pitches in to help flood victims

In the aftermath of the 1974 Brisbane floods the Volunteer Army was born. Tens of thousands of volunteers turned out to help those whose houses and buildings were flooded.

It was important to attempt to clean out the mud as the water went down. The smell was totally overpowering and the mud was everywhere. This smell was something you would never forget - ever and if you have never smelt it you would never know just how bad it was.

One enduring photo popular during the flood period was one of a couple of blokes rescueing a pallet of XXXX beer from a hotel - it is important to remember the necessities of life!

Tanker breaks away!

As somebody who lived not too far from the Evans Deakin Dry Dock under the Story Bridge it was almost a daily scene to watch the progress of construction of the 65,000 tonne oil tanker, Robert Miller come to an end. This was to be the last ship constructed in this drydock. It was also the largest ship ever built in Australia at that time.

Prior to the storm conditions in January 1974 the ship was floated out of the drydock and was positioned in the river at the “fitting out” wharf.

The length of the ship at 240 meters was wider than the width of the Brisbane River at that point. In the surging water the ship turned side on in the river causing fear that it would dam the Brisbane River thus ensuring that flood waters would rise much higher than they were already. This would have been a catastrophy for an even much larger area of the city.

As in the 2011 Brtisbane Flood where a tug boat safely diverted a large piece of the Brisbane River walkway under the Gateway Bridge so too was Brisbane spared worse damage when a lone tugboat was able to turn the Robert Miller into the stream and re-position it to prevent further damage.

The Robert Miller went on to successfully trade the seven seas carrying its cargo of crude oil until it was retired in April 2000 and then broken up for scrap at the Bangladeshi city of Chittagong.

After an extensive stakeholder and community consultation the Sunshine Coast Regional Council has approved an option for a detailed plan to up-grade facilities at the park. Local Councillor Ms Jenny Mckay said, “The design plan will include a welcome and orientation area, rainforest ecolo-gy, a living lab and research section and a kids’ education area.”

This plan will include new Discovery Centre, café, gift shop, elevated view-ing platform, meeting theatrette, conservation research area and offices and amenities for the volunteers and staff.

At the Education Centre visitors will learn about local indigenous history, industry, European settlement, community groups, gifting of the reserve and the Thynne family.

Project construction costs are estimated to be about $4.5 million and council’s forward capital works program provides $1.97m for the design and upgrade.
