Truthful Jones Tells... that an older, white haired man walked into the Maleny jewellery storeone Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side.

He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him. The old man said, “I don’t think you understand, I want some-thing very special.”

At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over.

“Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000,” the jeweller said. The young lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, “We’ll take it.”

The jeweller asked how pay-ment would be made and the old man stated, by cheque. “ I know you need to make suremy cheque is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank on Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon,” he said.

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweller phoned the old man. “There’s no money in that account.”

“I know”, said the old man, “but can you imagine the week-end I had?”

Morale: Never look at an older man and think that he has passed it. Experience will outdo youthful exuberance ev-ery time.

THE END OF AN ERAby Jack Wilcox AM

When you see this photograph, this grand old lady (the building) of a previous era will no longer exist. The Maleny Tennis clubhouse at the Showgrounds, this romantic if rickety relic of a bygone age is currently being rebuilt. The asbestos roof, the structure precariously balanced on three out of four stumps, the dangerous staircase, now a climbing challenge for some of the club’s more ‘mature’ members’ will be gone. Over the next month the long overdue renovations will take place thanks to the stringent savings programme put in place by the mem-bers, topped up by a $15000 grant from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

A user friendly single level structure will replace this icon with its ghosts of hundreds of players with names like Alan Webster (husband of Olga), three year singles champion back in the fi fties, memories of Jack Thorne and his prodigious work preparing the old clay courts, faded 1920’s photographs of the legendary Robin Simpson’s parents and others luminaries which adorn the walls and the cedar honour boards which record the history of the club and its many champions. There will be no access to the clubhouse during the renovation. The courts will be available for use during the construction phase.

The “NUT” AwardIt matters little what the mon-etary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. They are not only a danger to themselves but they are a danger to other road users who have no control over the prevailing situ-ation, not through their actions but the actions of the inconsider-ate drivers. Each week we will bring you the contender for the weekly “NUT” award - that is the weakest part of the car’s safety - “The Nut behind the wheel”...Let us see if we can do our little bit to improve road safety around our town.If you know the person men-tioned please have a quiet word to them.

This week’s award goes to:-

just getting away from cars this week! One would wonder at the mentality of the person/s who vandalised the pioneer’s head-stones that are in front of the Maleny State School grounds.

We are often asked “How do pro-fessional painters make it look so easy to put on a coat of paint”.There is no one answer. The most important thing, I guess is experience. But, there are prod-ucts that help you get that smooth application whether brushing or rolling. One such product for acrylic paint is Floetrol by Flood Australia.

What does it do?When added to paint, Floetrol gives a longer wet edge, increased coverage, extended spray gun life, easier fl ow and improved hiding. Floetrol maintains paint quality and does not evaporate.

How does it work? The drying time of water-based paint or stain depends on the weather. In hot, windy or humid condi-tions paint dries too fast resulting in brush and lap marks. Water evaporates and increases chalk-ing. Floetrol will reinforce the paint and make acrylics behave like oil based paint.

Where will it work?Floetrol can be used in all acryl-ics, water-based paints and stains, water-based textured coatings and pebble fi nishes.Use Floetrol when brushingFloetrol improves every acrylic brush job because it:

· avoids paint build-up on brush

· avoids lap and brush marks· stops paint pulling and drag-

ging· stops bristle separation· retards chalking· loads brush with 20% more

paint

Use Floetrol when rollingFloetrol will give a better job

every time because it:· reduces roller pressure on the

surface to avoid paint build-up on edges of roller

· eliminates roller spatter· does not leave roller marks· provides a spray-like fi nish

and loads more paint on roller

Use Floetrol when spraying.Floetrol is recommended by the world’s leading spray equipment manufactureres because it:

· stops tip clogging and piston freeze-up on cup guns

· extends life of equipment· improves spray pattern· uses lower pressure· assures better coverage· makes clean-up easier.

Floetrol does not change the co-lour or sheen of paint.

Floetrol and other Flood Australia products are available at Maleny Paint Place, 6/14 Lawyer Street, Maleny.Call on in and ask about any painting tasks that you have to do. There is bound to be a product to help get that perfect fi nish.

Media Release Biological Farmers of Australia 15th July 2009

PUTTING THE CERTIFICATION INTO ORGANIC

The next Up Front Club / Maple St Co-op Food and Farming breakfast will feature a presentation by Daniel Phipps, Certification Officer with Australian Certified Organic.

Australian Certified Organic (ACO) is Australia’s premier certifier, known in the marketplace by the recognisable organic “Bud” logo which shoppers use to identify certified organic products.

Daniel Phipps works on the technical side of organic certification with ACO, licensing producers, food manufacturers and other operators who reach the stringent bench-marks of the Australian Organic Standard (AOS).

The AOS and organic production in general have far-reaching impacts on the health of communities and the environment, prohibiting such pollutants and community concerns as synthetic pesticides, GMOs, hormones, food additives and antibiotics. The Standard also has requirements for animal welfare, preservation of natural habitat and maintenance of soil health.

Daniel’s work entails dealing with day-to-day enquiries from operators wishing to gain certification and assisting certified organic operators to ensure that their current practices conform to the Standard’s requirements.

Daniel’s intimate knowledge of organic standards and their application in the real world make him a fascinating and informative speaker. This is an ideal opportunity either to clarify the essence of what really is organic or to establish if going organic is for you.

What is Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA)?

The BFA, constituted formally in 1987, is Australia’s largest member-based organic organisation, representing and servicing sectors as varied as cosmetics, fertilisers, almost every farming sector, value adders and retailers.

The BFA has two subsidiary certification agencies which regulate the organic marketplace both for export as well as domestic sale. They are Australian Certified Organic and for smaller operations, Organic Growers of Australia (OGA Certified).

Jobs supportI am pleased that the Gov-ernment has promised greater support for employ-ment and education in the Sunshine Coast and Cabool-ture regions in recognition of the potential impact in these areas of the economic slow-down.

The Sunshine Coast depends signifi cantly on tourism and construction to drive its economy and Caboolture relies heavily on industry, and all these sectors are be-ing hit hard by the economic slowdown.

I am pleased that the Aus-tralian Government has picked up on these hard-ships and said it will follow up with support.

I totally support any propos-al to increase infrastructure spending on the Sunshine Coast to meet the needs of our growing population, including generating employ-ment and economic.

The local areas were named in a report released this week by the Department of Employment.

The report suggests the ar-eas should expect Centrelink job expos and more fi nancial information seminars.

Electoral EnrolmentIt was of interest to read re-

cently that some 1.2 million eligible Australians are not enrolled to vote for federal elections.

The AEC has also been run-ning a promotion to encour-age schools to register for Enrol to Vote week, which will be held from July 27 to August 2. The week is de-signed to encourage 17 and 18 year olds to register to vote – 17 year old will be-come eligible to vote on the day they turn 18
