SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTIt is a very busy time at Tweed River High School at the moment for staff and students. Our teachers are working hard to provide additional assistance and programs to students. They are to be commended on providing our students with a variety of enrichment opportunities and individualised guidance each and every day. Term 4 is proving, yet again, to be a very fulfilling term at Tweed River High School. There are many activities and events happening this term for students to engage with and work towards personal excellence.

Peer SupportOur Year 9 students actively engaged in Peer Support Training in preparation for our Year 6 students arriving for Orientation Day. Thank you to Ms Cowan and Ms Cupitt for leading our Year 9 students who gained tremendous skills to lead and support our incoming Year 7 students. Year 7 2021 are very lucky to have such responsible leaders.

Orientation DayYear 6 students from our partner schools and beyond were treated to an engaging, informative and fun day on December 1 ably led by our amazing Peer Support Leaders who really did a fabulous job of working with our soon to be Year 7 students. There were many activities available for students to engage in; for example, Art, Marine Studies, Sport, Drama, Food Technology, Agriculture, English, History and Textiles enabling students to have a “taste” of high school life.

Thank you to Mrs Mackney for her organisation and to Mr Fugar for bringing the day together and for keeping it running smoothly throughout and to all the Peer Support Leaders, School Captains, administrative, support and teaching staff who gave of their time to support and present the learning opportunities for the Year 6 students. Thank you also to Mr Betts, Year 7 Adviser 2021; you have an enthusiastic group to work with next year and beyond.

Year 7 CampAnother amazing opportunity for our students this week with Year 7 attending Camp Goodenough in Carool. We are very fortunate to be able to offer Year 7 this opportunity. They all looked very keen as they embarked on their adventure. They are sure to have a fantastic time as they continue to bond together as a Year Group.

Thank you again to Mrs Mackney for her organisation and to Ms Beardmore for finalising everything and bringing it all together; it really is an enormous task. Thank you to Mr Fugar for supporting the Camp. Thank you to Mr Winter, Year 7 Adviser and to all the student leaders, support and teaching staff who have gone above and beyond in attending the camp; an enormous but rewarding experience. We look forward to seeing the weary but happy faces upon their return and listening to the stories about their experiences.

Music for LifeOur Music for Life students embarked on an excursion to Uki to bring together their achievements this term making a music video. Thankyou to our Student Support Officer, Mrs Fleming, for facilitating this program and to all of the staff supporting her. Another huge effort from staff resulting in further opportunities for our students.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTPresentation DayPresentation Day will be held on Thursday December 10 in the SEC. The format will be a little different this year to allow for COVID restrictions. Years 7 and 8 will be acknowledged and celebrated in lessons 1 and 2 with Years 9,10 and 11 following in lessons 3 and 4. This will be recorded and available for viewing after the event as unfortunately due to COVID, we are not able to extend an invitation to parents. Please look out for communication closer to the event on how to access the recording. Thank you to the Presentation Day team; an incredible amount of work goes into the celebration of our student’s success.

In addition, students, after their presentation, will be treated to a TRHS Wet and Wild Day here at school. More information will become available closer to the event. It is important, however, for students to arrive at school in full school uniform to participate in Presentation Day and have a change of clothes ready to engage in the water activities. Thank you to Mr Simpson and his team for organising this additional event.

These days would not be successful without everyone coming together as a team. So many opportunities require a huge amount of time and energy from our wonderful, dedicated and talented staff. Thank you again to all involved.

Social media Students are constantly reminding us that social media is a positive platform and that we can be a little too critical of its constructive side and tend to see its destructive side a little too quickly. Maybe it is because, as a school, we get to deal with a lot of the negative outfall from these platforms. There have been times when the content on social media can be disturbing and some students put themselves at risk. As a school, we will continue to be vigilant in educating our students about digital citizenship, however it does take a village to raise a child so I do encourage parents to be aware of their child’s online activity.

Here are some helpful tips that you could do as a parent to ensure they are using the different social media platforms as an informed digital citizen:

    • Engage in your child’s online activity and discuss the types of apps, websites and games they are viewing to ensure content is age-appropriate

    • Make use of parental control on devices to help limit your child’s online exposure

    • Help your child report and block inappropriate content on social media or apps

    • Encourage your child to talk to you about anything upsetting they view online

    • Visit www.esafety.gov.au for further advice on apps, social media and online safety issues.

Banned item concern The use of e-cigarettes is on the increase among teenagers in Australia. We continue to implement numerous welfare and discipline strategies at the school to address this issue and support students. Some parents have indicated that they are unfamiliar with these devices.

Electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices that often look like a USB stick that heat a liquid to produce a flavoured vapour that is inhaled. The devices deliver the aerosol directly to the lungs. The appeal of these flavoured e-cigarettes to adolescents has led to their rapid uptake around the world.

The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is concerned that e-cigarette users were three times more likely than non-e-cigarette users to subsequently become tobacco smokers. While the damaging impact of smoking tobacco is well known, the short and long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are still being researched.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTBanned item concern cont'd...Under the NSW Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008, it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes or e-cigarette accessories to a person under 18 years of age. The sale and use of e-liquid nicotine, including in e-cigarettes are against the NSW Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Regulation 2008. This means e-cigarettes containing nicotine cannot be sold in Australia.

We continue to have conversations with students here at school about making positive choices in life and the impacts of choices on health and wellbeing, but it would be beneficial for parents to also have such conversations with your child about e-cigarettes. Some students do feel confronted in a peer group and need to be supported in making the right decision not to indulge in this behaviour.

Attendance Make every day count as the research shows that poor school attendance is associated with:

    • lower academic achievement including literacy and numeracy

    • early school leaving

    • leaving school with fewer qualifications

    • reduced opportunities for students to learn and access educational resources, further limiting achievement

    • further absenteeism in higher year levels

    • increased alcohol, tobacco, and substance use in adolescents.

    • Every day of attendance in school contributes towards your child’s learning, and academic outcomes are enhanced by maximising attendance in school. There is no ‘safe’ threshold. The effects of absenteeism accumulate over time, therefore every day counts.

Our students readily exhibit our core values, Respect, Safety, Opportunity, Teamwork and Excellence, in their everyday lives and are a credit to their families, the school and the wider community. We thank you for your ongoing support of the school, its programs and initiatives.

CHANGE TO SCHOOL DEVELOMENT DAYS FOR 2021In order to support a strong start to 2021, the NSW Department of Education has changed the distribution of five School Development Days (SDD) throughout 2021 to allow for two SDDs at the beginning of Term 1.

As a consequence, there will only be one SDD at the end of Term 4. There will be no change to the allocation of one SDD at the commencement of Terms 3 and 4.

For Term 1, 2021, School Development Days are scheduled for the following dates:

NSW Eastern Division: 27 and 28 January

Tweed River High School students in Years 7, 11 and 12 will return on Friday 29 January 2021 with all students returning on Monday 1 February 2021.

TIGER HAMILTON-CUTHEL - TRHS JOURNEYTiger commenced his secondary schooling at TRHS in Year 7 2015, and continued his study via mainstream through to Year 9. In 2018 when Tiger was in Year 10 he was enrolled in the Southern Cross Distance Education transition program where he continued his schooling via a blend of mainstream at Tweed River High School and the Distance Ed Program, also delivered on-site at Tweed River High School.

In 2019 the Aboriginal Alternate Program was incorporated into Tiger’s pattern of study which was based at the Ganggalah Church where he attended each Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesdays and Fridays, he continued to attended his mainstream classes at TRHS. Mondays were filled with mentoring sessions delivered by his mentor Kane as part of the “Music 4 Life Mentoring Program” through One Vision Productions. Kane, who is also a rapper, built a great rapport with Tiger and together they produced several rap songs one of which was named “Resolution”. Tiger presented this rap song as his Major Project in Aboriginal Studies.

In 2020 the Aboriginal Alternate Program relocated to the Minjungbal Museum where Tiger continued to attend along with TRHS where he studied his two mainstream subjects until completing Year 12.

We, as a school, are very happy to advise that Tiger graduated this year and received his HSC, so a big thank you to Hannah Tiger’s mum for being there every step of the way. Thank you also to supporting staff at Tweed River High School and Support Staff at the Aboriginal Alternate Program and also Kane, Tiger’s mentor.

Congratulations Tiger – You made it! This has to have been one of the toughest years of all and you did it - we are all very proud of you!

LIBRARY NEWSThe 2020 Reading Challenge has now ended and Jacqui and I are organising prizes as we speak. It has been a great year and we have had approximately 80 students from Year 7 to Year 10 completing the challenge. Well done to all of you and we look forward to the Reading Challenge Presentation on Tuesday 8th of Dec at recess in the library. Our local NSW MP Geoff Provost and a representative for Justine Elliot will also join us. Thank you to the English staff who have encouraged students to participate and complete their reading logs.

Green Team: rubbish chip packetThe Green Team and I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope that you will endeavour to buy less plastic/ cheap items that too often end up in the bin. Our team is gearing up to do a last clean-up on Tuesday 15th of Dec as our playground continues to be littered with small plastic.

A reminder to parents that the most SEEN and PICKED-UP plastic rubbish around our school are:

Small Single Chip Packet: some alternatives include buying large and cheaper chip packet and putting the chips in a quality plastic container.

Glad wrap is also found in large quantities and could be replace by brown paper bags or containers.

Birds like crows and ibises are often seen picking up these plastic items and fly with them, only to dump them somewhere else, including our creek and river.

Let's keep the TWEED BEAUTIFUL and use less single use plastic.
