Agricultureisincreasinglycri*cizedforitsimpactontheenvironment.Thiscourseexaminesthetensionsbetweentheneedtoproducefoodandfiberefficientlyandconcernforsustainabilityandtheprotec*onofnaturalresources.OpentoJDCandidateswithpermission.Studyofinsolvencylaw,withpar*cularemphasisonfederalbankruptcylawStudyoftherulesofevidenceunderwhichtrialsareconducted;themethodsbywhichitemsofevidenceandadmiQedorexcluded;relevancy,realevidence,tes*monialproof,andhearsayanditsexcep*ons.Thecourseexploresthebusiness-humanrightsnexuswithapar*cularfocusonthefoodandagriculturalsectorandoncasestudiesfromaroundtheworld.Thecourseintroducesstudentstothelinkagesbetweenbusinessandhumanrightsfromavarietyof(legal,regulatory,andpolicy)perspec*ves.

Thisclasswilldealwiththeclashofaparent’srighttoraisetheirchildrenastheyseefitandtheState’sdutytoprotectthewelfareofchildren.Theclasswillconsistoftradi*onalsessionsontheapplicablelawfollowedbysimula*onsapplyingthatlawtoscenariosbasedonover45yearsofprac*cingfamilylaw.Studentswillbeaskedtopreparepleadings,conductnego*a*ons,andrepresentparents,thestateandchildrenatsimulatedhearingsStudyoftheprocessofcivilli*ga*onfrompreliminarymaQerssuchascourtselec*onandjurisdic*on,throughjoinderofpar*esanddiscoverytechniques,todisposi*onofcasesandfinalityofjudgments.SomeaQemptismadetocovertheantecedentsofmodernprocedure;whereappropriate,sugges*onsforreformaredevelopedinclassdiscussion.EmphasisisontheFederalRulesofCivilProcedure.
ThiscourseisdesignedtoteachstudentshowanaQorneyforcriminalclientsadvocatesforhis/herclientsintheearlystagesofthecase—fromtheini*almee*ngwiththeclientandthearraignment/ini*alappearancethroughbailhearings,competencyhearings,anddiscoveryreview.Studentswillnavigateearlyinterac*onswithaclientinordertoul*matelyadviseaclientastowhetherthatclientshouldpleadguiltyorgototrial.Studentswilllearnthroughin-classroleplayinginhypothe*calsitua*onsmirroringreallifeinterac*onswithclientsduringvariousproceedings,lecture,mo*onwri*ng,andviewingrealcourtproceedings.
Studentswillrepresentlow-incomeclientsseekingtoenforcetheirrightsincivilmaQers.Underclosefacultysupervision,studentswilldevelopandrefinetheirabilitytoeffec*velyandethicallyprac*celaw.Studentswillhandleallaspectsofclientrepresenta*on,includinginterviewingandcounseling,factinves*ga*onanddiscovery,nego*a*on,andcourtappearances.Studentswillalsopar*cipateinaweeklyseminarandmayhavetheopportunitytoengageinotherformsofadvocacy.Prerequisite:Cumula*veGPAof2.00,successfulcomple*onof48semesterhours,includingCivilProcedure,CriminalProcedure,Evidence,andProfessionalResponsibility,andqualifyingforRuleXVprac*ce.

StudentsenrolledintheHumanTraffickingClinicwilldevelopandcompleteadvocacyprojectsfortheirclients–agenciesandorganiza*onsseekingtoconfrontandpreventhumantrafficking.Studentswillmeetwiththeirorganiza*onalclientsatleasttwiceduringthesemester.ThroughtheirworkintheHumanTraffickingClinic,studentswilldevelophighlytransferablelawyeringskills,includingfactinves*ga*onandlegalresearch,wriQenandoralcommunica*on,andcri*calandstrategicthinking.IntheHumanTraffickingClinic’sweeklyseminar,studentswillexaminethescopeofthehumantraffickingproblem.Theywilllearnaboutfederalandstatean*-traffickinglaws,includinghowtobringcivilclaimsandseekimmigra*onrelieffortraffickingsurvivors.Studentswillalsostudyvariedan*-traffickingstrategiesandassesstheireffec*veness.Inaddi*ontointerviewingandcounselingskills,studentswillalsolearnhowtoworkeffec*velywithsurvivorsoftraumaandacrossculturalandlanguagedifference.
