Kingdown Week Friday 20th November 2015 Number 9, 2015-16 Sky Sports Living For Sport Snowboarding 15 selected, very excited students who are embarking on a project to help them towards their future goals, whether it is aiming to become a professional athlete or having a successful career in another profession. The GB record holder for the fastest snowboard run (and potenally world record holder), Jamie Barrow came in to deliver a series of sessions with the group. Jamie started by introducing himself and telling the story of how he first got into the sport and tragically, the injury that stopped him progressing. However, his story showed us the determinaon and resilience required to achieve, even in the face of great adversity – aſter being told he would never be able to snowboard again by the doctors, he has broken records: going 153km per hour on his snowboard: being towed behind a Mitsubishi Evo and an aeroplane. To watch these amazing videos, please look on YouTube – they’re crazy! The group were then introduced to the six steps to success, which were: Mental Toughness, Hunger to Achieve, People Skills, Sports and Life Knowledge, Breaking Barriers and Planning for Success. The group then discussed these and created their own goals to aim for. We also looked at the importance of organisaon and working within a team environment and how these two factors can make your life easier by being able to fit more within the me you have. Breaking barriers and mental toughness were going to be key for the vast majority who were about to experience snowboarding for the first me in their lives. We travelled to Mendip Dry Ski Slope and aſter geng kied out, took part in a two and a half hour session. This saw us looking at the different methods of making our way down the slope. Some of the group took to it very easily: Aleasha Caple, Joe Cassidy, Macy Wrintmore and Tom Carpenter-Rich; some baled through and made great improvements: Bex Fry, Molly Weston, Leo Eglin, Georgia Rowland and Evie Spra; whilst others: Mr Richardson, were terrible and fell over so much the instructors began to lose paence. Jamie Barrow was on hand to offer his advice and many were able to break down their inial barriers of being unable to stay on their feet. The group that were selected were: Dom Davey, Adam Cooke, Joe Cassidy, Tom Carpenter-Rich, Jacob Randall, Tom Poolman, Leo Eglin, Ella Daly, Bex Fry, Georgia Rowland, Molly Weston, Aleasha Caple, Macy Wrintmore, Evie Spra and Cerys Blain. Thank you to Jamie Barrow for spending the day with us and Mr Richardson who organised the day and entertained us by showing how bad you can be but sll enjoy yourself! Jamie Barrow will be returning to Kingdown in early 2016 to revisit the progress of this group but also work with two other selected groups. Kingdown U14s Beat Bassett at Football

Kingdown School travelled (again) to an away fixture in Royal Wootton Bassett for their first round fixture in the County Cup! With a few new additions making their debut for Kingdown saw us take a strong team.

The game started off scrappy with Kingdown struggling to work out the pace of the pitch, with numerous ball through a running off for a goal kick. Bassett pushed on Kingdown's defence but Amy Gordon (MoM) intercepted and cleared any potential danger by coming to meet the ball. It looked like Kingdown were going to be pegged back, but Lucy Hubbart was on hand to collect any loose balls. Poppy Braddell was on hand to shoot (our first shot on target) with a hopeful lobbed shot, which unfortunately for Bassett saw their keeper fumble the ball into her own net (1-0). Some great attacking play down the left by Ella Broad saw us win a throw in deep in their half. Ella received a pass from Ashleigh Powell just inside the box who smashed one over the keeper into the top right corner (2-0) as the half time whistle went.

Debuts for Jodie Ash and Nicole Omello saw solid displays by both. Tamara Van Den Berg and Evie Spratt (C) were strong at centre midfield and drove forward with the ball, pushing Bassett back! Kingdown got into got positions within the box, but failed to get a shot on target. Poppy Braddell showed some outstanding defensive discipline in the final minutes to ensure we progressed to the next round. Mollie Middleton managed to deflect any attacks Bassett threw down the left hand side. Nicole Pugh, Jas Fitzgibbon, Cameryn Stewart and Rebecca Guy managed to put in a solid performance throughout their involvement - well done!

This was a comfortable win by Kingdown School but all are aware they must improve to get through the next round.

Team: Lucy Hubbart, Nicole Pugh, Amy Gordon (MoM), Rebecca Guy, Mollie Middleton, Tamara Van Den Berg, Evie Spratt (C), Nicole Omello, Jas Fitzgibbon, Ashleigh Powell, Ella Broad, Poppy Braddell, Jodie Ash and Cameryn Stewart.
