14 Friday 19th March, 2010 by Reemus Fernando A formidable Moratu Vidyalaya, captained by third year coloursman Anuruddhaka Kalhara will face a rejuvenated Sri Sumangala College, Panadura, skippered by fifth year coloursman, Chathura Nilaweera, in the 58th ‘Battle of the Golds’ Big Match which commences at the De Soysa Stadium, today. Moratu Vidyalaya are the favourites as they have tested their prowess against formida- ble opponents, recording out- right victories against Division I teams. They beat Kalutara Vidyalaya, St. Sylvester’s and President’s in tournament matches this season, while recording an outright victory against St. Mary’s College, Kegalle, in a friendly match. They lost to St. Joseph’s in a tournament match, but when the two day tournament ended last month, Moratu Vidyalaya were among the top teams in the Division I tournament to book a place in the knockout tournament. Having amassed huge scores against Division I oppo- sition and having recorded vic- tories against Moratu Vidyalaya, they will go into the Big Match as favourites, but their arch rivals won’t be easy prey as they have peaked in time. Sri Sumangala, captained by experienced campaigner Chathura Nilaweera played 15 matches this season. They suf- fered several (five) defeats, early in the tournament but have seemed a rejuvenated out- fit of late as they have under their belt three outright victo- ries. A nine wicket victory against formidable Dharmasoka in a friendly match last week has provided the spark to face their arch rivals with confidence. Sri Sumangala beat Sri Jayawardenepura, Siri Piyaratana and Dharmasoka Colleges this season. When the two teams meet in the 58th encounter, Sri Sumangala, who were the last to record a win in 2006, lead the series 8-6. 58th ‘Battle of the Golds’ Formidable Moratu face rejuvenated Sumangala SRI SUMANGALA Seated from left: Vimukthi Fernando (V. Although they are a Division II team, Tissa Central came up with some remarkable performances during the season and the magnifi- cent double of over 100 wickets and 1400 runs for the season by their skipper Chathuranga provides more colour to the outfit, who go in as slight favourites against Kalutara Vidyalaya, who seemed to be strug- gle during the two day tournament. Tissa Central recorded three outright wins this season and suf- fered two defeats. They beat St. Anthony’s (Wattala), Wadduwa Central and Royal (Horana) Colleges, while going down to Royal (Panadura) and Mahanama (Panadura) Colleges. Fifth year coloursman Chathuranga, with a magnificent record of 110 wickets and 1486 runs for the season, in just 14 matches, will be the key player in the Tissa Central camp and he is likely to dominate both their bat- ting and bowing departments. Wicketkeeper batsman Nirosh Gayashan (over 600 runs), Kasun Thivanka (around 500 runs and 18 wickets), Harsha Sampath (around 400 runs and 12 wickets), Ruwan Tharanga (over 300 runs and 20 wickets), Supun Dilshan (around 300 runs and 15 wickets) and Lahiru Sampath (200 runs with a century) are the other players who contributed significantly towards Tissa Central’s success this sea- son. Kalutara Vidyalay’s record of just one outright victory (against President’s) against four outright defeats in the two day tournament matches portrays a team strug- gling for success. But skipper Sapumal Pathirana said that he would be counting on the senior players to turn the tables on Tissa. Pathirana (with over 500 runs and 21 wickets), will rely on expe- rienced campaigner Tharindu Uthpala (over 800 runs) and all rounders Brian Chappel (over 400 runs), Savith Priyan (over 400 runs and 35 wickets) and Sandun Chamara to do well in the Big Match. 53rd ‘Battle of the Mangosteens’ Tissa enjoy thin edge TISSA CENTRAL Seated from left: Kasun Thivanka, K. Ananda Sastralaya recorded their last win way back in 1976, under the captaincy of Anura Jayasinghe. The annual battle is expected to be a closely contested one this year.
