Empty & load valves adjust the ef-fective braking action on a freightcar as a function of the car’s weight.The EL-60 empty & load system forfreight cars offers the following im-portant advantages: load sensing ina single-axis plane; a lightweight,high-strength sensor arm made ofnon-corrosive, composite material;a visual indicator showing full orproportional brake condition; andimproved rock and roll protection.EL-60 is small and easy to connect.It is available in 45, 50, or 60 per-cent proportioning. For ease of ac-cess, a brake cylinder pressure mea-surement tap can be placed in oneof two locations.

New York Air Brake’s Brake Cylin-der Pressure Measurement Tap as-sists in measuring brake cylinderpressure per AAR Standard S-4020.It is available in either a socket weldflange fitting style or in a socket weldcoupling style. Both are installed bywelding to standard 3/4-inch brakecylinder piping. A self-sealing quickdisconnect valve, with an optionalplastic end cap to prevent contami-nation, is also available. It providesa quick connection to the brake cyl-inder test gauge when performinga single-car test.

Thevalve is a direct replacement for theexisting design, is 40 percent lighter,and uses 30 percent fewer parts. Thehighly reliable, long-lived three-po-sition retaining valve controls thebrake cylinder exhaust rate or re-tains a 20-psi brake cylinder pres-sure, as governed by the position ofthe manually operated valve handle.The three positions are: Direct Ex-haust (EX), Slow Direct (SD), andHigh Pressure Retain (HP).

1-1/4 SPLIT FLANGE FORADJUSTABLE SOCKET WELDFLANGE FITTING

The split flange is comprised of twoidentical flange halves. This type offlange can be installed after thesocket weld swivel is applied to thepipe. The socket weld fitting with splitflange can be used without creat-ing large holes in structural mem-bers of the car body.

CCB II: ADVANCEDLOCOMOTIVE AIR BRAKESYSTEM

In 1998, New York Air Brake intro-duced its second-generation locomo-tive electronic air brake system —CCB II (Computer Controlled Brake).It is designed to provide best-in-classreliability and to meet the railroadindustry’s demand for increased lo-comotive availability. CCB II is a mi-crocomputer-based system designedto provide full automatic and inde-pendent brake control for main linelocomotives. Its network-based de-sign permits faster response, and itsself-diagnostic routines and LRU(line-replaceable unit) approach re-duce maintenance costs.

New York Air Brake’s EPCU man-ages the pneumatic interfaces be-tween the locomotive brake systemand the consist. It controls thelocomotive’s brake cylinders, brakepipe, independent application andrelease pipe, and the actuating pipe.A redundant pneumatic backup sys-tem is integrated into the EPCU, andprovides backup for partial loss ofcomputer control in the lead loco-motive or functions in the trail modewhen the system is unpowered.
