Let’s Converse about CranberriesJanet Brown, Dietitian for Valley Senior Services

Although we main-ly think of cranber-ries during the hol-idays, we should try to include them in our diet through-out the year. Not only are cranber-ries delicious but they have several

nutritious qualities. One may assume you know all there is to know about the cranberry but let’s converse about the reasons to eat this versatile fruit.

Cranberries have been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect. This effect may potentially benefit conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis, stomach and digestive disorders and our car-diovascular system.

Most of the cranberry’s health benefits come from the fact that it is one of America’s top 10 antioxidants (substances that make our cells healthy). The urinary tract benefits from the antioxidants called proanthocyanins. These decrease bad bacteria on the urinary tract walls – ideally preventing infections. Proanthocyanins may benefit dental health by also decreasing bacteria from sticking to our teeth and gums.

Other bacteria related to stomach ulcers called Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) may be reduced with regular cranberry intake. Like the urinary tract and teeth and gums, the cranberry may prevent the H. Pylori from attaching to the lining of our stomach.

The cranberry can help our cardiovascular health for several reasons. There’s some sug-gestion the cranberry does the following for our heart and vessels: lowers the bad (LDL) cholesterol; raises the good (HDL) cholesterol;

decreases inflammation, artery stiffness and plaque build-up on artery walls (which causes heart attacks) and lowers blood pressure.

Ideally, you will eat the whole berry rather than drinking the juice (which can contain a lot of calories and carbohydrates). The whole berry is potentially more healthful than other popular berries; however, the whole berry is very tart. Try the dried cranberry (like Craisins®), which can be a more palatable way to add the cran-berry to everyday eating. Cranberries can be a part of many meals and snacks such as: • Add them to your favorite cold or hot cereal

(ie: overnight oats)• Sprinkle a few on your salad with other top-

pings• Freeze whole cranberries and use as “ice

cubes” in sparkling water or iced tea• Blend whole cranberries in your favorite

salsa recipe

Try one of these two easy snack recipes: 1. Take a pretzel rod and dip half of it into pea-

nut butter. Roll the coated end in Craisins®. ENJOY!

2. Snack Mix: Blend dry cereal (Chex, Cheer-ios, Oat Squares, etc…) with Craisins®, small pretzel sticks, peanuts (or nut of choice) – possibly a few dark chocolate chips. ENJOY!

the future through your estate planning process, the gift can be designated to either of the funds.

Many of us do not have the resources presently available to support the organizations that are near and dear to our heart. However, support can be given in the future through the use of a properly worded bequest in your will or the designation of Valley Senior Services as a beneficiary of life insurance or retirement funds such as 401K or an IRA. Valley Senior Services will work with you and your attorney to properly word a bequest or beneficiary designation to be a part of your will or trust document.
