TO CHANGE ORNOT TO CHANGE?A proposal to change the names of Sedgefield Island's roads has raised mixed reactions from members of the public (see letters page). The proposal, advertised in last edition of The EDGE, offers a list of new names being considered by the Street Naming Committee of Knysna Municipality, and asks for feedback and suggestions from members of the public on or before 29 February 2016.

Finalised proposals with all comments – positive and negative – will then be perused by the Street Naming Committee before being tabled for Council's approval.

According to Christopher Bezuidenhout of Knysna Municipality's Communication Department, the application for the name changes and the list of suggested names was initiated back in September 2012 when the Sedgefield Ratepayers and Voters Association committee submitted a proposal to council. Doris Nayler, who was the ward councillor back then, said the idea behind the application had been to replace the historic names with something more fitting with the natural ethos of The Island.

The application lay dormant for a while until the council's recent the initiation of a new street naming policy. This was necessitated by continued development in the Greater Knysna area which in turn meant more streets (and thus street names) were needed.

T h e p o l i c y obviously also made provision for council to c o n s i d e r applications for the changing of existing names. T h e S R V A application once again surfaced, and once a list of proposed new street names had been compiled, t h e y w e r e advertised.

The reaction of those Sedgefield residents against the proposal has been to suggest that it is a waste of valuable resources, and that budget allocated to the changing of the names should be spent on more urgent matters such as upliftment in poorer communities and fixing of potholes. But enquiries have shown that the cost of the name changes to the Municipality is anything but extensive. According to Bezuidenhout the Municipal Roads department has put the outlay down at approximately R100 per sign, and other than the paperwork and the updating of the Municipal Geographical Information System, there are very little other costs involved.

Should the name changes be approved there will obviously be inconvenience to some residents of The Island who will need to go through the necessary paperwork associated with a change of address, though it should be remembered that the names, and even the proposal certainly isn't 'a fait accompli' as has been suggested, so jumping the gun should be avoided. “The Sedgefield Ratepayers and Voters may even choose to withdraw their application,” said Bezuidenhout.

But a number of local residents are delighted with the idea of the new names, reasoning that the tree and plant names are new and fresh, and fit in very well with the street names elsewhere in the village. “They are definitely more befitting of the well-known Island Conservancy than the rather historic, current names,” pointed out one Sedgefielder.

Said Sam Reynolds during the building process – “The childhood dream of turning a field into the raddest jumps of all time may finally be coming true! We have two machines, we have the field and we have the 60ft roll-in tower. All we need to do now is build the raddest dirt jumps of all time!!”

SERIOUS AIRTIMEFour internationally known mountain bikers are having a whole heap of fun at Garden Route Trail Park, and as this paper hits the streets they will probably be making history by tackling the biggest dirt jump in the world!

Sam Reynolds (from England), Matt MacDuff (Canada), Danny Pace (Wales) and Andreu Lacondeguy (Spain) are pro and semi-pro free-style mountain bikers who have, for the second yea r runn ing , c rea ted a playground bar none at the park, situated in Barrington, north of Sedgef ie ld . Most of the preparation work was done by Reynolds and MacDuff who have been working on the design and construction for the last month, with the others arriving last week to help with the finishing touches…. And to hit the jump of course.

With funding assistance from Monster Energy, what they have built is seriously impressive. A l o n g s i d e a s e r i e s o f exceptionally 'hectic' jumps, which would themselves scare the living daylights out of a normal mountain biker, sits The Mount of Doom. And that is the best news for the Garden Route, and no doubt why the local Tourism authority - Knysna & Partners - have seen the value in offering their full support. The whole project has been captured digitally in an action packed documentary entitled Pure Darkness 3, and, thanks to social media, the phenomenal stunts of these riders, as well as the stunning scenery they are riding in, will be seen all over the world, time and time again, via Facebook, You Tube, Twitter and all the other platforms.

“It adds yet another very exciting dimension to the Garden Rou te ' s a l r eady popu la r mountain biking experience,” says Dormehl.

No, I am not talking about the incident at the fruit emporium. I still stand by my claim that I had no intention of stealing the watermelon, I had simply put it up my shirt as part of my rather popular (and more than a little hilarious, even though I say so myself) ‘Pregnant Aunty’ impersonation, in an effort to cheer up Mrs Ed, who was fairly miserable after I had limited her time in the music shop (there’s only so many times one can listen to YMCA by Village People in the sound booth) . The fact that I had absentmindedly forgotten to take the large piece of fruit out before we left the shop could have easily been explained, had I been offered the chance. Indeed summoning the mall security was a little OTT I thought, as was the rugby tackle when the rather large fellow caught up with me on the escalator.

But no, that’s not what I’m talking about at all. The (current) embarrassment I’m referring to is this: At the ripe age of thirtyninetyforty something (don’t you just love our new national counting methodology), I, T’Ed, have to…..

(this is very hard to say)

I have to…. (really, it strikes fear into my heart just thinking about it).

I have to retake my driver’s licence.

That’s right. Not renew, RETAKE!

“Why?” I hear you ask, (thanks for caring, but your concern would be more believable if you wiped that smile off your face), “What’s wrong with your old licence?”

I asked the same question of the law enforcement officer. He had stopped me in a routine check and, when I proudly handed over my treasured Zimbabwean driver’s licence, he started chuckling, then laughing, then guffawing! Apparently it isn’t exactly accepted on South African roads, and (he says) I had been exceptionally fortunate not to have had it confiscated in the past 18 years spent driving here.

“But it’s my licence,” I whined, in one of those accidental, just-like-a-girl sort of voices that us men are occasionally plagued with in times of severe stress. I snatched the metal Zimbabwe Traffic Authority disc back off him and clutched it close to my ample bosom* (*Please note that that’s a turn of phrase, I don’t have a bosom, ample or otherwise, it just sounded better than ‘stomach’) To be honest I was lucky I didn’t cut myself.

You see when I say that the Zim licence is made of metal – I’m not talking a light sort of tin affair. Oh no. The Zimbabwe driver’s licence is made of far more indestructible stuff. The mullet haircut I sported in front o f t h e G o v e r n m e n t Photographer in 1985 has

literally been engraved in steel. Or titanium. Or kryptonite. I’m not sure what it is, except indestructible.

And in keeping with the Zimbabwean tendency to make maximum use out of any product, the driver’s license is one of the most handy items to have about one’s person. In its normal form it can be used to open bottles, spread butter, scrape paint and stop bullets (which is why it is traditionally carried in the top left shirt pocket), but when one edge is sharpened….. it slices biltong, cuts electrical cable, makes for a formidable self defence weapon and, in emergency, can even be used for shaving or performing minor surgeries.

So here I am, living not only with the fear that the authorities may insist on taking this wonderful instrument away from me, but also another thing:- In the not too distant future I will be TAKING the TEST.

You see, when I did my licence back in the distant past, things were different. The Zimbabwean roads were far more chaotic, and the vehicle I was driving – Mrs Ed Senior’s Purple People Eater which I had borrowed for the auspicious occasion – was so unsuitable that it actually played in my favour. Let me explain.

Imagine you are a driving test examiner in a city where the laws of keeping on a particular side of the road, stopping at a red light, or having brakes that work all the time, are flouted by 90% of the road users. Then the mullet-haired teenage slob you are due to test arrives in a badly (hand) painted Renault 4 some decades past its due to be driven over a cliff date, and tells you to ignore the holes in the floor on the passenger side because they let the water out. He then asks if you could please hold the rearview mirror with the hand that isn’t holding your door closed, because it tends to flop about a bit (the mirror, not the door), before he bursts into song and roars you both into the dense jungle of Harare traffic with nary a care, nor an exhaust pipe.

The end result? Yep I passed first time. In fact I am convinced he kept his eyes closed for the entire duration of the test. Even when he whimpered ‘What did we hit?’ during the parallel parking I could assure him with a little white lie that it was just an empty grocery box….. whilst quietly sending the unfortunate victim off with a $5 note hoping that it would be enough to fix the bicycle… and perhaps the limp.

So yes. I am a little hesitant to Take the Test again. And Mrs Ed doesn’t exactly boost my confidence either - she keeps pointing out that I have developed many bad habits over the years. Of course they aren’t ‘bad habits’, they are more like ‘Skills’. Or even ‘Superhuman Powers’.

Really - I have oft noticed the look of surprised admiration on the faces of other drivers around me, no doubt wishing that they too had the ability to eat a pie, sip coffee, tune the radio and change shirts whilst driving.

But my daughter (Fear Factor) tells me this will not score any extra points in The Test. In fact they may even penalise me for it. And worse still, I won’t even be able to have the radio on, because apparently singing Bohemian Rhapsody is frowned upon too, even if you are one of the chosen few who can ‘Galileo’ at the right pitch.

So, of course, I am left with no choice but to do what is right. I have to look fear full in the face, bite the bullet and face up to this whole problem like a man. There’s no backing out now, it’s booked, and paid for, and in just over a months time, I’m g o i n g … … . . . . . . . b a c k t o Zimbabwe. Let’s face it

TAMBOER ARRESTED AGAINT h e S t a t i o n Commander of the Knysna po l i ce , Colonel Michael T a y l o r , h a s c o n g r a t u l a t e d members of the police with the rapid response in a r r e s t i n g t w o s u s p e c t s w i t h suspected stolen property at Beverly Hills, Smutsville on 28 January, one of t h e m b e i n g Sedgefield’s infamous habitual criminal Donald Tamboer.

Both suspects were arrested after a tip off on illegal activities taking place was received from a member of the public. The SAPS members responded and while on foot found the suspects with a large bag containing linen,

crockery, towels and other household goods.

The possibility that these items were stolen at burglaries in the area is being investigated.

Tamboer (27) was charged and appeared in the Knysna Magistrates’ court on 01 February. This matter was

postponed and he will remain in custody.Colonel Taylor thanked the members involved, saying that property related crimes remains one of the challenges in Sedgefield.

M e a n w h i l e S e d g e f i e l d ’s ‘Sheriff’ Mike Hofhuis suggests that whilst this well known criminal is behind bars, locals shouldn’t be complacent as there are definitely others about.“The current modus operandi of certain criminals operating in Sedgefield has changed once again in recent weeks. We have received unconfirmed reports of opportunists targeting mainly senior citizens. We are therefore requesting that those who are more vulnerable to the criminals should take extra precaution especially when at home. The following precautions do not only apply to senior citizens, but all residents:- Ensure that your security gates on all doorways are kept locked especially when leaving your doors open during hot days;- Ensure your panic buttons are in working order and that your security company is receiving the signal. Consult with your security service provider if you are not sure what to do;- If possible, carry a remote panic button on a lapel or in your pocket, especially if you are walking around outside of your main dwelling;- Be more vigilant of individuals who are loitering in your street or who may coming knocking at your door looking for jobs, money or general handouts;- Be extra cautious when using an ATM to draw or deposit money.

The Masithandane Board is very happy to announce that the building of the new six-bed customised Care and Respite Centre is about to begin, with J Gee Construction having been awarded the tender.It has been a journey of eight years, with many ‘touch and go’ moments, especially with regards to fundraising, and the mountains of paperwork. But perseverance has paid off and the project is to become a reality.

The Centre will provide a safe and loving home-from-home for the many that are dying or suffering alone in abject awfulness. It will allow those at the end stage of their lives to die with dignity. It will also provide relief to families in crisis because their loved ones require 12 or 24 hour temporary care.

Val and Keith Lewis from the United Kingdom just love South Africa and especially Sedgefield.

They visit twice a year and whenever they come they bring suitcases full of donations for the FreshStart Recycle Swop Shop.

This time they brought over 80kgs and this included 500 quality pencils that a friend of theirs, Emma, had donated in lieu of having presents at her 50th birthday.

In addition to collecting stuff for the SwopShop Val and Keith also manage the FreshStart website and face book page and so are very up to date with all the activities. The volunteers are humbled by their energy, dedication and abundance.

Off-duty officer arrests robbery suspectAn off duty police member, Warrant Officer Jakobus Saptou arrested a suspect seconds after he robbed a 52-year-old woman on the corner of Main and Long Street Knysna on Friday, 29 January 2016 at about 12:30.

The victim was walking on the sidewalk when the suspect came from behind, grabbed her hand and took the victim’s wallet, before he fled from the scene. Warrant Officer Jakobus Saptou witnessed the incident and gave chase in his private vehicle. He managed to stop the suspect in the Main Street

near the turnoff at Church Street. The officer searched the suspect and found the stolen wallet in his possession.

All stolen items were returned to the victim, who was very appreciative of the efforts of this member.

The Station Commander of the Knysna police, Colonel Michael Taylor, thanked the member for his rapid response in the apprehension of this suspect. He also said that this arrest would send a very strong message to would be criminals that we, the police, will do anything in our power

This young man braved a lot to bring his bag of recycling to the Swop Shop. He chose a cap and bag with his mula points and delighted in the cold slice of watermelon.

Knysna U3A are privileged to have Doug Wilcox, the owner of the 65ft South African yacht Lady Amber, as the guest speaker at their General Meeting on Thursday 25th February at the Brenton on Sea Community Hall.

Wilcox qualified as a mining engineer but has spent most of h i s w o r k i n g l i f e a s a businessman, computer nerd and occasional adventurer. With a

changing crew Lady Amber ventures to the remotest and least visited parts of the world's oceans. With its ability to stay at sea far longer and much more economically than typical research vessels, she assists organisations like UNESCO, NOAA and NASA with essential fundamental research. Projects such as ARGO are helping scientists to understand the complex ocean systems that affect all of us.

Wilcox will give a presentation on some aspects of Lady Amber and the research she is involved in. Doors open at 9:30am and after tea, coffee and biscuits, the meeting starts at 10am. Competitive sporting spirit is running high as entries roll in for the 2016 Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC) – a day of wheelchair racing that fills the streets of George with spectators as over 1000 athletes whizz along the route to the finish line.

This year's event takes place on Saturday 20th February in George, which has been the host city for this prestigious event since its inception in 2002.

The 2015 champions – the high rollers – will be there in force to defend their hard-earned titles in 2016. Well-known wheelchair athlete Ernst van Dyk flew over the finish line in record time last year, with second- and third-placed athletes only seconds behind him. Will he remain unbeaten at this event for a fifth

year running? That remains to be seen.And, not to be outdone, the w o m e n ' s 2 0 1 5 4 2 . 2 k m champion, Ayishetu Sidu from Ghana, has entered the 2016 marathon. She will travel all the way from West Africa to maintain her championship title.

But it is not only the serious athletes who enter. Everyone and anyone with physical disability is encouraged to participate – there are several different races that take place on the same day - a marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1km), 10 km race and the 5km Fun Event for those who jus t want to enjoy themselves.

P a d d l i n g , t r a i l r u n n i n g a n d mountain biking enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that a new multi-sport event will be added to the programme of s p o r t i n g e v e n t s during this years Slow Festival (25-27 March), namely the X Lakes Summer and X Lakes Terra Firma.

Although not a new event to the area, the X-Lakes Summer was set up as a 100 k i l o m e t r e p l u s mountain biking and paddling relay event that incorporated many of the tracks, trails and water bodies within the greater Knysna area.

There will now be a new addition to the event, the X-Lakes Terra Firma, which will offer the option to substitute the paddle sections for trail running legs said event organizer Juan Botes. By this we are hoping to attract a l l l o c a l m u l t i - s p o r t i n g

enthusiasts, paddlers, mountain bikers and trail runners, as well as have out of towners participating.

The event will be organised under the Trisport banner (Juan Race Director is now part of the Trisport team). The race this year will start in Knysna and will

As the Slow Festival (25-27 March) draws closer, the news is out that another new event will be added to the programme this year, namely a treasure hunt called The Amazing Race. Gerhard Bezuidenhout, travel and adventure enthusiast will be organizing this exciting event w i t h M a s i t h a n d a n e nominated as the beneficiary.

The new event is set to take place on Friday 25th March, starting at the Steam Whistle Stop (Train Stat ion) in Sedgefield and will take in all the spectacular scenery from Hoekwil to Karatara and the areas in between. Points are scored with CORRECT answers and if there is a tie, the result will go on an ideal time which will be set by the organizers and not known to the teams. The event is not based on speed, is approximately 75kms and could take up to 3-4 hours to complete. Bezuidenhoudt adds that ‘On the ball teams may take 1hr 30 to complete the route however the ideal time will be somewhere between the 1hr30 and 3hrs.’

Cllr Leon van Wyk, Ward Councillor for the area, officials, the police and the Wilderness R e s i d e n t s R a t e p a y e r s Association held a meeting last week to discuss the way forward after two attacks on the railway line.

According to Cllr Van Wyk this is the first step in addressing the issue. “We agreed to three phases. In the first immediate phase, signage will be erected both at the Wilderness and Victoria Bay ends of the line. Secondly, an arrangement will be made to patrol the railway line between Wilderness and Victoria Bay on a daily basis. These two phases will be funded from the Ward 4 (Wilderness and

surrounds) project funds.

“For the third phase, it is proposed that the opportunity for guided walks be examined, e.g. for an initial two persons to undertake guided walks along the rai lway l ine at pre-d e t e r m i n e d t i m e s . T h e hospitality industry should play a key role in rolling out this project, providing training, etc. This project could be expanded to other walks or hikes. Initial seed capital could be provided out of the Ward 4 funds. With the support of the hospitality industry, this could become a job creation project,” said Cllr Van Wyk.

Cllr Van Wyk said although Transnet would probably regard it as illegal to walk along the line, it remains an important tourist attraction and it would be safer to walk the route in groups. The tourism industry should as a matter of course discuss personal safety with their guests, whether it be with regards to swimming or hiking.

The South African Police Service are determined that the

muggers are caught and are working hard to achieve this. However, no amount o f patrolling is a guarantee that the perpetrators will be caught because it is a long distance and one can't be everywhere all of the time. The George Herald has a survey which suggests 24 hour security.” Van Wyk said.

“My approach in December already was that we should turn this into a tourism opportunit. At the monthly meeting with the W i l d e r n e s s R e s i d e n t s Ratepayers Association in early December 2015, we discussed safety along the Wilderness – Victoria Bay line. I suggested a pro-active approach of providing guides / escorts for groups of persons wishing to walk along the line.

The police were aware of the problem at that stage and were already patrolling. Cllr Van Wyk said police officers continue to regularly patrol the line.

The Wilderness Lakes Catchment Water Forum AGM took place last Wednesday. Apart from electing a new committee, which incidentally included most of the existing committee members, the meeting was characterised by a fairly lively discussion about the quality and security of our water supply. Councillor Peter Myers was present and the Municipality was also represented by Rhoydon Parry. There were also representatives from the Department of Water Affairs. All these officials did their best to reassure the meeting that there is no impending crisis which will affect our water supply and to answer penetrating questions about the detail of how Sedgefield's water gets from several different sources to our taps. There were a number of requests for the Forum to do its best make sure that the next meeting is attended by Municipal Officials who can tell us the whole story and that preferably this should be made available in writing before the meeting. Another topic which was raised was the apparent non-functioning of at least one of the stations designed to record water levels in Swartvlei.The effects of drought are severe in many other parts of South Africa. At present, Sedgefield has an adequate water supply, unlike other parts of Knysna, which are understandably receiving priority attention from the Municipality. However those present at the meeting were clearly concerned that this security might not continue and were seeking reassurance from Municipal Department Managers that a robust contingency plan is in place and that the details are shared with the Forum and thus with members of the Sedgefield community.

On 30 January 2016, Laerskool Sedgefield Primary, hosted our local Interschools Athletics Event . Hoekwil Pr imary, Karatara Primêr, Sedgefield Primêr (Smutsville School) and Laerskool Sedgefield Primary all took part, breaking records set in previous years and pushing the limits of their talents in each event. The competition was fierce as the day went on and a great time was had by all. Well done to all involved and big thank you LSP for hosting the event.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS IN SEDGE

DROWNING IN RIVERMOUTHFisherman Kevin Olivier tragically lost his life on Saturday 30 January when he drowned in the Swartvlei Estuary.

It is believed that he and a friend had been fishing off the Swartvlei Beach and decided to cross the river to make their way home. The water was deeper than expected and partway across Olivier complained that he was tiring quickly and called out to suggest they turn back, which they did. His friend

reached the bank but when he turned around Olivier had disappeared underwater and was nowhere to be seen.

H e n n i e N i e h a u s , N S R I Wilderness station commander, confirmed that the NSRI, the SAPS, a Police Dive Unit, WC Government Health EMS and Sedgefield Fire and Rescue Services responded to the call.On arrival at the scene Sea Rescue Craft Die Swart Tobie was launched and NSRI rescue swimmers and Police divers

entered the water. During the free dive search Olivier’s body was located, recovered and b rough t t o sho re where paramedics declared him deceased.

His body was handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.

“Sincerest Condolences are expressed to family of the deceased, by all services involved in the operation,” concluded Niehaus.

If this line describes a person in your life, chances are you know a narcissist.If this person happens to also make your life hell, those chances increase 100-fold. This is not the most alarming fact about narcissism, however – studies show that it is on the rise. In her book 'The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the age of Entitlement', Jean M Twenge says: In data from 37,000 college students, narcissistic personality traits rose just as fast as obesity from the 1980s to the present, with the shift especially pronounced for women. The rise in narcissism is accelerating, with scores rising faster in the 2000s than in previous decades. But this article is not about people who are excessively self-interested, crave attention and battle to feel empathy. Rather, in the list of symptoms, it struck me that narcissistic behaviour looks very much like the antics of a wilful three-year old in need of clear boundaries. It's all about me-me-me, as is natural for a

child that age. But why does it seem as if a rising number of children never outgrow this behaviour, resulting in adults that essentially behave like spoiled kids? In other words, narcissists. Could it be that parenting is to blame?OK, maybe I'm out on a limb here, and perhaps the link is a tenuous one, but hear me out. Psychologis t and author, Leonard Sax, MD, says in his book 'The Collapse of Parenting', that we hurt our children by treating them like grown-ups. Children are offered choices instead of guidelines and strong parenting, as demonstrated in the example Sax gives of a mother and child visiting him for the child's sore throat. Upon his instruction that she open her mouth so he can look at her throat, the mother asks: “Do you mind if the doctor looks at your throat for a second, honey?” The girl said no, and in the end had to be restrained in order to get a sample for a strep-throat test. “Parents are incapable of speaking to their children in sentences that end in periods” says Sax. “Every sentence ends in a question mark.”

Sax goes on to say that a hierarchy between parent and child no longer exists, and parents focus instead on what will make the child happy and boost their self-esteem. Parents now see their job as facilitating whatever a child wants to do, instead of teaching them right from wrong, teaching them the meaning of life and keeping them safe. Why are we surprised by the generation of self-proclaimed super heroes without a clue?According to Sax and other specialists, parents should teach their children skills such as self-c o n t r o l , h u m i l i t y a n d conscientiousness, in other words – tools to think of and act f o r p e o p l e o t h e r t h a n themselves. “In doing that job, you're going to do a lot of things a child won't approve of and not u n d e r s t a n d , ” h e s a y s . “Sometimes, you have to be the bad guy.”Sax cites numerous research studies that found links between a lack of parental authority and rising obesity, increase in the number of children on anti-anxiety and ADD medication, and a culture of disrespect

If this stupid suggestion should be passed then it is obvious that the money required for these changes will come out of the pockets of ratepayers, most of them living on the Island being pensioners who already have financial constraints. Moreover, tourists will get lost as most GPS mapping devices do n o t h a v e a u t o m a t i c m a p updating. Before one can even begin to think of such a stupid idea of changing road names the first thing that should come to mind in a healthy mind with an IQ of around 85 to 110 should be from where will the money be sourced? I fully agree with the Municipal

Manager Mr Grant Easton who obviously is very well financially inclined. Municipal Manager quote: As such changes are potentially disruptive, confusing and costly to implement, there must be a sound reason for the suggested change and the applicant must therefore provide a full and detailed motivation for the change: end of Quote. I rest my case. But I am very disheartened that I live amongst individuals who are unable to apply simple reasoning in terms of finance when making these stupid suggestions. Dear Editor,An elderly woman was knocked to the ground at about 4.30pm Sunday 31 January on Fish Eagle Green, Sedgefield. Two large dogs, one black and one yellow were on leads. The woman handling them appeared to be totally unaware of the reasons one has dogs on leads. They were completely uncontrolled. They rushed around the older woman entangling their leads around the woman's legs and pulling her crashing to the ground. Neither her, nor her male companion made any attempt to help her, or, console the traumatized little girl on a pink bicycle who was with them. The woman disappeared with the dogs, the man attempted some sort of apology and disappeared. Disgusted long-time resident.

humility”. Find ways to show your child that they are not the centre of the universe by engaging the whole family in charitable activities and acts of goodwill. They need to see it in action. Consistently and from a young age. Do I really need to say anything about narcissism here?The school staff are your allies – not the people to immediately distrust when your child is reported. Of course support your child, but demonstrate that honesty and integrity are paramount. The brilliant child who cheats gets 0 for the test, period. (See? No question mark.)Parent what they do – also a difficult one, but boundaries for teenagers are as necessary as for the young child. It is not OK for a 14-year-old to date a university student, or to attend or give parties with alcohol. A child who is allowed to do as they please will feel a sense of entitlement as an adult, and this is most certainly a narcissistic trait.Parenting is not easy, but living in a world of narcissistic, anxiety-ridden, obese or fragile adults would be worse.

In terms of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act, 16 of 2013 and Knysna Municipality's Planning By-Law, Knysna Municipality hereby invites nominations for members of the public to be appointed to the Knysna Municipal Planning Tribunal (KMPT).

COMPOSITION OF THE KMPT:

The KMPT will consist of Officials in the full time employment of the Municipality and external members who have demonstrable knowledge, experience and preferably qualifications in any of the disciplines of spatial planning, land use management, land development or the laws relating thereto.

SITTINGS OF THE KMPT:

It is expected that the KMPT will meet to consider applications once every two months, and by exception, once a month. TIME REQUIRED:

Members are envisaged to spend between eight and sixteen hours every two months, on the KMPT. This includes preparation for the meeting, site visits and the meeting itself (the total of which will be capped at eight hours per meeting).

REMUNERATION:

The hourly rate of remuneration (capped at 32 hours per month) will be decided upon by Council at a later stage, and will be based upon Government guidelines. TERM OF OFFICE:

The period of appointment for the KMPT will be three years.

Mobile Clinic at Fresh Start Swop Shop 1st February was a BIG first with a mobile c l i n i c r u n b y S i s t e r Kombrink visiting the Fresh Start Swop Shop. The clinic is supported by Martie Rooi and will take place every week during school terms.

While 150 children braved temperatures high in the 30s to trade their recycling for mula points, 12 children had direct access to the clinic and health care ... and no doubt this number will increase in future weeks as the children and their parents get to know and trust that this facility is now available to them every Monday afternoon.

Do you know any handy first aid tips for pets in an emergency situation? It is very important to remember that you need to act quickly and calmly and remember that the actions taken before getting to the vet make a marked difference to the recovery of your pet.

Here is what you should do in a number of different situations:

Seizures• Keep your pet away from any objects (including furniture) that might hurt it. Do not try to restrain the pet.• Time the seizure (they usually last 2-3 minutes).• After the seizure has stopped, keep your pet as warm and quiet as possible and contact your veterinarian.

Fractures• Muzzle your pet.• Gently lay your pet on a flat surface for support.• While transporting your injured pet to a veterinarian, use a stretcher (you can use a board or other firm surface as a stretcher, or use a throw rug or blanket as a sling). If possible, secure the pet to the stretcher (make sure you don't put pressure on the injured area or t h e a n i m a l ' s c h e s t ) f o r transport—this may be as simple as wrapping a blanket around them.• You can attempt to set the fracture with a homemade splint, but remember that a badly-placed splint may cause more harm than good. If in doubt, it is always best to leave the bandaging and splinting to a veterinarian.

Choking• S y m p t o m s : d i f f i c u l t y breathing, excessive pawing at the mouth, choking sounds when breathing or coughing, blue-tinged lips/tongue.• Use caution – a choking pet is

more likely to bite in its panic.• If the pet can still breathe, keep it calm and get it to a veterinarian.• Look into the pet's mouth to see if a foreign object is visible. If you see an object, gently try to remove it with pliers or tweezers, but be careful not to push the object further down the throat. Don't spend a lot of time trying to remove it if it's not easy to reach—don't delay, and get your p e t t o a v e t e r i n a r i a n immediately.• If you can't remove the object or your pet collapses, place both hands on the side of your pet's rib cage and apply firm quick pressure, or lay your pet on its side and strike the rib cage firmly with the palm of your hand 3-4 times. The idea behind this is to sharply push air out of their lungs and push the object out from behind. Keep repeating this until the object is dislodged or until you arrive at the veterinarian's office.

What to do if your pet is not breathing• Stay calm• If possible, have another person call the veterinarian while you help your pet.• Check to see if your pet is unconscious.• Open your pet's airway by gently grasping its tongue and pulling it forward (out of the mouth) until it is flat. Check the animal's throat to see if there are any foreign objects blocking the airway• Perform rescue breathing by closing your pet's mouth (hold it closed with your hand) and breathing with your mouth directly into its nose until you see the animal's chest expand. Once the chest expands, continue the rescue breathing once every 4 or 5 seconds.

What to do if your pet has no heartbeat• D o n o t b e g i n c h e s t

compressions until you've secured an airway and started rescue breathing• Gently lay your pet on its right side on a firm surface. The heart is located in the lower half of the chest on the left side, just behind the elbow of the front left leg. Place one hand underneath the pet's chest for support and place the other hand over the heart.• For dogs, press down gently on your pet's heart about one inch for medium-sized dogs; press harder for larger animals and with less force for smaller animals.• To massage the hearts of cats and other tiny pets, cradle your hand around the animal's chest so your thumb is on the left side of the chest and your fingers are on the right side of the chest, and compress the chest by squeezing it between your thumb and fingers.• Press down 80-120 times per minute for larger animals and 100-150 times per minute for smaller ones.

• D o n ' t p e r f o r m r e s c u e b r e a t h i n g a n d c h e s t compressions at the same exact time; alternate the chest compressions with the rescue breaths, or work as a team with another person so one person performs chest compressions for 4-5 seconds and stops long enough to allow the other person to give one rescue breath.• Continue until you can hear a heartbeat and your pet is breathing regularly, or you have arrived at the veterinary clinic and they can take over the resuscitation attempts.Please remember that your pet's likelihood of surviving with resuscitation is very low. However, in an emergency it may give your pet its only chance.

Tips on First Aid for Pets

Recently Sedgefield resident Dale Robertson had her first encounter with a puff adder.She lives below the radio tower on top of the hill. At 9:30pm her 2 cats started acting very warily staring at something just outside the door. When she got up to take a look, the puff adder peeked his head out from under the curtain, hissing loudly.Her neighbour, Hennie came to the rescue, but realised the snake was larger than he could handle with his snake pole. By this time the snake had taken refuge in a pot plant on the patio. Dale was kept busy trying to keep her pets from getting too close. After a call to her neighbour, two fire fighters came to Dale’s rescue with their catch pole and a special bucket, hooked the snake who put up quite a struggle and took him off for release on Cloud Nine. Dale would like to thank her neighbour, Billy from the Knysna Municipality and the two fire fighters for their quick and efficient response. After her encounter Dale said she was going to do a little research on Puff Adders.

Fresh water is one of the most precious substances on earth. After days of unbearable heat, Sedgefielders heaved a sigh of relief when a couple of rainy days came along.Recently, by chance, I came across a website called www.waterwise.co.za, which is run by Rand Water. It's an absolute treasure trove of information about how to plan and run your garden to be water-wise. I thought I'd share a few examples, but ultimately I hope I can persuade you to look at the website for yourselves and download some of the many leaflets and posters that are available. There are also a series of lesson notes, which those of you with children or grandchildren might find useful.

Garden design and choice of plants feature heavily. There's information on planning lawns so that they use as little water as possible and how to integrate paving with lawns, using rain that falls on paving to water the garden next to it. The role of mulching in the reduction in water required by a garden is also explained in detail, with lots of information about what can and can't be used to make mulch. Compost, both creating it and using it, is another important topic. Again, there are extensive notes about how to make compost and what can and can't be used to make it. I can confirm the benefits of composting, which I've been doing actively for years. For me, one of the most useful things I have is a chipper, which is used to reduce branches and other pruned material to a size which composts successfully.There's a very useful leaflet called “Plan Before Planting”. It guides you through the process

of deciding where to put zones of different water usage, so that when you do have to water you can use the water as efficiently as possible. What to plant is another important topic – there's a leaflet about health-giving vegetables and another about plants used for natural therapy. This one inc ludes some information about herbal tea.Other topics that caught my eye: organic fertilizers, pollination, propagation, the function of flowers. There's an article on creating an ecological garden, which will attract beneficial wild-life to your garden. I also found another website called www.lifeisagarden.co.za. This is run by the SA Nursery Association and it is packed with useful tips. “Permaculture” is also worth googling for good information. Finally, as the a t t a c h e d p i c t u r e s h o w s , attractive gardens can be created by using unlikely building materials.

On Wednesday, 20th. January, (32) local residents responded to an invitation from TSiBA Eden Campus to attend a meeting in the Council Chamber in the Sedgefield Municipal Offices where they were briefed on the activities of the college and on the role of local volunteers in contributing to its objective to create opportunities for local school-leavers to play a productive part in the future of the country.In 2009 Eden College in Karatara, an initiative by a philanthropic businessman to teach a select group of about 24 young residents of the settlement and i t s sur rounds to be entrepreneurial eco-farmers was on the verge of closure when it was given new life by TSiBA Education NPC in Cape Town and Eden College became the rural campus for TSiBA. TSiBA Eden still has a strong eco-culture, but now offers accredited qualifications in business administration at C e r t i f i c a t e a n d H i g h e r Certificate level in Karatara, and includes an opportunity of entering TSiBA's Bachelors Degree at the Cape Town campus. Last week 19 of the TSiBA Eden Higher Certificate students of 2015, registered for their BBA Degree in Cape Town. In addition, Ignition Centres are located at both campuses to assist

would-be entrepreneurs to establish their businesses. In order to reduce dependence on sponsored funding, TSiBA also outsources its training to capacitate staff in commercial and government organisations. The successes of those who have a TSiBA qualification attest to the effectiveness of its training methods. The placement rate for graduates is 95% compared with a country wide average of 32%. At the degree level there is a 50% throughput rate compared to the national average of 25%.Seven graduates have been awarded Mandela/Rhodes scholarships, three have been a w a r d e d K o f i A n n a n scholarships, and two have been named as Allan Gray Orbis Fellows. There is a high but unquant i f iable degree of employer satisfaction. TSiBA is

proud of its record, but knows that it is possible to do even better. The purpose of the meeting was to interest members of the public i n t h e E d e n d i s t r i c t i n contributing as mentors, tutors, or sponsors according to their particular strengths. The campus needs a continuous infusion of new b lood to make the improvements that are necessary. The interest shown in the discussions that were part of the programme suggest that local community has what it will take to build on what has already been achieved. The National Department of Environmental Affairs (the DEA) has made this proposal at the behest of disadvantaged rural communities in the coastal area s u r r o u n d i n g t h e M a r i n e Protected Area (MPA), who historically fished this coastline but whose fishing access has been completely denied since 2001.

The DEA has previously made two attempts, in 2007 and 2010, to open this MPA to fishing at the behest of these communities. Then as now WESSA remains strongly opposed to permitting any form of fishing in the Tsitsikamma MPA, as we are c e r t a i n t h a t t h i s w o u l d significantly compromise this critical marine biodiversity area.

The vital importance of no-take MPAs in conserving fish broodstocks and in being able to set sustainable fishing quotas is globally acknowledged in fisheries management.

The Tsitsikamma MPA is a refuge for eleven of South Africa's seventeen threatened fish species and encompasses essential breeding grounds for the line-fish and squid fisheries, according to research by WWF-SA’s Living Waters Partnership.

Outside of the Tsitsikamma and other MPAs our fish stocks have been severely over-exploited, some close to the point of total c o l l a p s e . T h e r e f u g e populations in the MPAs are the l a s t r e m a i n i n g h e a l t h y broodstock, which seeds the denuded coastline with juvenile fish. The greater size and maturity of fish protected within MPAs ensures that they can produce a considerably greater number of viable offspring than the sparse populations in unprotected areas.

While WESSA is cognisant and empathetic of the complex issues surrounding the access by d i s a d v a n t a g e d r u r a l

c o m m u n i t i e s t o m a r i n e resources, we believe that the marine biodiversity protected within the Tsitsikamma National Park MPA is of immense value to the nation as a whole and that its protected status should not be compromised by the needs of a few.

Morgan Griffiths, WESSA’s Environmental Governance spokesperson, says: “We have

When it comes to structure – the best place to start is probably at the foundation – or as it's now popularly known – with your 'core'.

How often in the last few years have we heard or seen that we should be strengthening our 'cores'? In the fitness industry, by our physiotherapists and other health care professionals there seems to be a constant nag to 'get your core firm'. How many of us actually know what our 'core 'actually is? It seems kind of vague to have to implement. Is it our 'middle', somewhere near the waist, is it in the spine or the belly, where exactly and what is this elusive 'core'?

If you think of an apple core, that seems to be a pretty accurate idea

of something to apply to thinking of our own cores. The very centre of your body, the absolute meaty visceral middle. If you think of your trunk as the space between your shoulders and your hips then your core, or centre, is probably closest to the area below your waist. To strengthen it, is no mean feat as we're called upon to think of ourselves as something a little more organic than we'd like to be.

Dealing with the pelvic floor, the basket of ligaments and muscles that prevents our internal organs from hanging at our knees, we need to know that it's at the bottom of the pelvic bowl - an intricate network of three layers. Simply put, the pelvic floor supports the pelvic organs. It's a tricky piece of equipment that works while you don't care and when you need it to work - it's difficult to access because we've taken it for granted for so long. T h a n k f u l l y w i t h a r i c h imagination and the ability to breathe consciously - very little

is impossible when it comes to the mind-body connection. Often described as the invisible exercise or 'kegels' – any health practitioner worth their salt will point you in the right direction. Without going in to too much detail the exercises involve e n g a g i n g y o u r p c ' s o r pubococcygeal muscles - simply put - your genitalia, whether you're male or female - there's a way to train the pelvic floor, but it takes some concentration and as eve r, some concen t ra ted breathing.

There are two things essential to mindful movement – thinking and breathing. Most importantly – keep breathing.

South Africa's first walking festival, the Garden Route Walking Fest, takes place on the Garden Route over the Easter Weekend in 2016, offering 52 walks between George, Knysna, Plett, Natures Valley, and Storms River, the festival is poised to offer visitors and locals the opportunity to connect with the area and to explore its natural beauty at leisure.

The Cape Garden Route is arguably one of the world's great walking destinations. It is the ideal place to host South Africa's only walking festival, with its beautiful mounta ins , secre t fores ts , cascading waterfalls, coastal cliffs, incredible beaches and famous trails.

Luke Gauché of Myoli Beach in Sedgefield and a grade 11 learner at Glenwood House in George won his 6th Victor Ludorum on Tuesday 26 January.

This despite still being U16 and having to compete U17. Since the age of 10 he has represented SWD and twice competed at the South African Athletics Championships over the last two years for hurdles and long jump.

Ex Sedgef i e ld Primary student, now professional golfer Branden G r a c e m a d e history once again when he won the Qatar Masters on S a t u r d a y 3 0 January, 2016 becoming the first player to take the trophy twice in a row s ince the t o u r n a m e n t began in 1998.

The 27 year old son of Buffalo Bay Restaurant owners Lorenza and Peter Grace shot a three-under-par 69 at Doha Golf Club to win the second leg of the European Tour's so-called “Desert Swing” by two shots over Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello (70) and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen (71). Grace shot an overall 14-under 274 for his seventh European Tour title.

According to his exceptionally proud parents, next week Grace is heading off to West Palm Beach, Florida, where he is joining the US PGA Tour.

The Strikers beat an invitation side on Sunday by 110 runs. Locals Divan Roux and brother JP scored 47 and 62 respectively and with the help of Eugene Blignaut who scored 40, their side managed 220 in 35 overs.Pieter Harmse then produced figures of 3/18 in 5 overs to bowl out the opponents for 110.
