November issue published: Friday 28th October 2016

Deadline date: Friday 14th October 2016

Copies are available in libraries and public places.

Beeston Post Office’s move to a new location on High Road at WHSmith has been confirmed and will now take place in October.

The move was first proposed in April and the new location is 25 High Road, around 230 metres from its current side on Chilwell Road.

The Post Office say the move will "create a modern open-plan branch with seven days a week service for customers”.

Roger Gale, general manager for the Post Office’s Crown branch

network, told The Local News: “Our customers’ needs continue to change and we are responding to that, taking the right action to sustain our services for years to come.”

The Post Office’s final plans for the new Beeston Post Office have been shaped following a six-week public consultation.

There will be new automatic doors at the entrance to the store and the new branch will have its own designated area.

The layout will include low level counters, PIN pads and hearing loops, as well as customer seating.

“WHSmith already operates around 100 Post Office branches throughout the UK and we have been successfully working with them for nearly 10 years,” said Mr Gale. "They have a proven record of running Post Offices with high levels of customer service.

“We are committed to remaining on high streets and at the heart of communities. We are making changes right across our network to enable us to do so.

“That means adapting to the needs of our customers, who want flexibility and choice about how and when they do business with us, whether face to face or online.”

The new branch will have four counters and two self-service kiosks, with opening hours from 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am until 3pm on Sundays, which is nine hours more a week than currently. The last day of service at the current branch is the 12th October 2016, with the new branch open from 9am on the 13th October 2016.

Full plans for the refurbishment of Beeston Library have been unveiled and £1 million will be spent on the project.

Work will begin on Saturday 1st October and construction is expected to take nine months.

While the library is closed, residents will be able to use the libraries in Stapleford and Toton, which will have longer opening hours.

A temporary library will be set up in the Beeston Youth & Community Centre, West End and will open on Monday 24th October.

This will provide a selection of stock, some computer access and the continuation of some events, such as the popular Rattle, Rhyme, Roll for children

The renovation project will improve the building’s infrastructure, including a new roof, windows, ceiling, lights, flooring and heating system, along with new shelving and a redesign of public spaces for modern library use.

The original main entrance, located on Foster Avenue, will be reopened, a new IT innovation suite is planned, as well as the creation of a new arts and learning

room, while improvements will be made to the meeting areas and exhibition spaces.

Councillor John Knight, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Culture Committee, said: “This is part of our commitment to modernise our libraries across the county to ensure they are fit for purpose and continue to

be inspiring centres for reading, learning, culture and community activity for many years to come.”

The project is being undertaken by Inspire and their chief executive, Peter Gaw, said: “At Inspire, we’re excited about the development of Beeston Library and the opportunity it gives us to create an inventive, modern space for the

people of Beeston – and indeed across Nottinghamshire.”

The extensive plans are currently on display in Beeston Library and residents are invited to offer feedback on the proposed works.

The original entrance to Beeston Library is pictured above and the photo was taken back in 1951.

A young apprentice has been awarded entry to a coveted industry scholarship for his work on a new Bellway development in Beeston. National housebuilder Bellway will support 20-year-old Jack Morley, who recently won entry onto the Barry & Peggy Foundation Scholarship through Central College Nottingham.

Jack was awarded the scholarship for the exceptional quality of his workmanship and practical application of theoretical knowledge demonstrated both at college and on-site.

Jack initially started studying carpentry with Central College Nottingham back in 2012, which reaffirmed his desire for a career in the industry. Keen to gain some hands-on experience, Jack secured his place on the Advanced Carpentry Apprenticeship with Bellway in 2014 and soon after began working at Silk.

“I was shocked but delighted when I realised I was nominated for the

award,” Jack said. “It was nice to see my hard work recognised by the teachers and I’m very appreciative of that.

“I push myself very hard in all areas of my work. I’m really proud of passing all my theory modules first time – they were a challenge that I overcame with dedication and hard work. I had to put what I’d learnt into practice and demonstrate precise woodworking skills with the machinery on-site, which largely consisted of precise cut roofs.

“Getting my NVQ was the best feeling because it now means I can work full time doing a job I really enjoy. My hopes are to become a qualified joiner like my uncle.”

As a respected college classmate and apprentice, Jack has the following advice for other young people thinking of beginning a career in the industry.

“Always give 100%,” he said. “It sounds cliché, but teachers and employers really do look for a lot of enthusiasm and commitment.

“It’s also worth speaking to and working with as many experienced tradesmen as you can. They can teach you a lot and have been in your position before, so they know what it’s like to be learning everything for the first time.”

Lee Wilkinson, construction developer at Silk, said: “The work that Jack has done with us has consistently been to a very high

standard and we are very pleased with his progress. He should be very proud of the work he has completed so far and it’s great to see he’s been recognised for all he has done. I’m sure he has a bright future in the industry ahead of him.”

Bellway is building 130 new homes and apartments at Silk off Hassock Lane in Beeston.

New defibrillators have been installed in the Borough of Broxtowe, thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and its contractors. New life-saving equipment has been installed in Toton, Stapleford, Bramcote, Brinsley and Cossall.

The council’s contractors, United Living, Vinshire Plumbing and Heating and Ian Williams, have worked with the East Midlands Ambulance Service and local town and parish councils to identify areas within the borough where

Public Access Defibrillators (PADS) could be installed, agreeing to sponsor the project by providing at least eight defibrillators throughout the borough.

Defibrillators can be found in the following locations...

•Cossall (former telephone box)

•Brinsley Parish Hall

•The Magpie Pub, Toton

•The West End Club, Stapleford

•Memorial Hall, Bramcote

Additional defibrillators are due to be installed over the coming months at Eastwood Town Council Offices/Post Office, in Greasley and in Bramcote.

Installing Public Access Defibrillators is very important as it provides 24-hour access to vital lifesaving equipment. The defibrillator delivers an electric shock to the heart in an attempt to re-stabilise the rhythm following a cardiac arrest.

In the event of an emergency, the person who called 999 for an ambulance would be given the code to the cabinet and have immediate access to the device.

The defibrillators will be housed in secure metal cabinets located on the exterior walls of public buildings within the community. These will be located in various places, which includes village halls, disused telephone boxes and public houses.

Borough Council partnership sees more lifesaving defibrillators installed across Broxtowe area

Nottingham’s tram network is gearing up for one of the city’s biggest annual events with the return of the world-famous Goose Fair.

Every year Goose Fair attracts tens of thousands of people and NET is stepping up its evening services during the event, which runs for five days from Wednesday, October 5.

Stephanie Moss-Pearce, NET’s Assistant Marketing Manager, explained: “With frequent and direct services from across the city and The Forest tram stop directly at the event’s doorstop, our network provides the best way of travelling to and from The Goose Fair.

“During the day, trams will operate as usual from every seven minutes and there will be extra trams running at least every ten minutes after 9pm

to make sure everyone can get home quickly.”

“Customers can also take advantage of our great value £5 Group Ticket – leaving them something extra to spend on the attractions!”

Priced at just £5 and available from all tram stop ticket machines, the Group Ticket offers unlimited tram travel for two adults, or two adults and up to three children, and is available from tram stop ticket machines from 4pm on weekdays and all day at the weekend.

Stephanie added: “Those travelling from outside of the city can also avoid the hassle and expense of trying to find a parking space by using one of over 2,000 free spaces at our Toton Lane and Clifton South Park & Ride sites.

The Latest Updates From The Tram

EXTRA TRAMS FOR GOOSE FAIR

Film lovers can now claim discount tram travel when heading to see the latest releases and classic movies at Broad-way Cinema.

Located on Broad Street, just a short stroll from NET’s Lace Market stop, Broadway is an independently run cinema, café bar and events venue that screens international and arthouse films.

NET’s popular £2 Event Ticket can now be used for return tram travel to Broad-way for all customers that pre-book their tickets online or at the box office for any event or screening at the venue.

Adam Byrne, Venue Manager at Broad-way, said: “We’re delighted to have part-nered with NET and joined other great attractions and venues from the city on the £2 Event Ticket scheme.

“Our audience comes from all around Nottingham and its greater area, and we hope this deal will make it easier and more affordable for everyone to come and visit us without having to worry about parking.”

NET’s Event Ticket is available from all tram stop ticket machines across the city’s network. Ticket holders must ensure they have their cinema ticket, or printed e-ticket, with them and are able to present it, along with their tram ticket, should they be asked by travel officers.

CATCH THE TRAM FOR A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

Staff from the Queen’s Medical Centre came out in force to help Nottingham’s tram network celebrate a year since it opened two new lines.

The QMC is home to one of the 28 brand new tram stops that opened just over12 months ago when the network more than doubled in size, linking the hospital with new and existing destinations along Nottingham’s tram lines.

To help mark the ‘tramiversary’, representatives from NET gathered at the QMC’s dedicated tram stop to handout breakfast treats and giveaways to staff and patients arriving at the hospital.

Stephanie Moss-Pearce, Assistant Marketing Manager at NET, commented: “We’ve always maintained close links with Nottingham’s hospitals and we’re delighted to have seen these strengthened over the last 12-months since the opening of QMC’s very own tram stop.

“With so many people now using our network to travel to the hospital from across the city, it was important to mark this milestone.”

NUH Director of Estates and Facilities, Andrew Chatten, said: “The QMC is blessed with some of the best public transport links in the country and is the only hospital in Europe with a tram platform on the campus, but many staff may be unaware of how much time and money they can save by leaving the car at home and travelling by tram.”

10 NEWS The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews

Students at Beeston's Central College Nottingham had plenty of reason to celebrate their GCSE results. The college saw a 97% pass rate across GCSEs in Humanities and Science, with A* grades being recorded in Higher Maths, English Language, History and Biology.

More than 1,750 passes were gained across a range of subjects, which also included ICT, Science, Psychology, Sociology, Human Health and Physiology and History. This is nearly double the amount gained last year.

Trissa Pearson, Central's head of school for Science and Academic Progression, said: “Our GCSE students come from a wide range of backgrounds, often for that second chance to progress their education or improve their career prospects.

“We really are thrilled that they can now move on to the next exciting stage of their lives. Whether that is staying at Central or moving on

to university, sixth form, or into employment, we wish them all the very best.”

One student celebrating after receiving her results is Emily Cook from Stapleford (pictured above).

Seventeen-year-old Emily wasn't able to take all of her GCSEs at school as planned because of illness. She suffers from collapses where she can lose the ability to see, hear and move and then has to spend time recovering.

Emily did manage to sit her GCSE Maths and English despite being very poorly, but couldn't do her other exams.

She made the brave decision to join Central last September, so that she could gain enough GCSEs to pursue a career in a science-based area. She was pleased to get a B and two Cs when she opened her results as she can now go on to study a Level 3 BTEC at Central.

Emily said: “I was really nervous about opening my results, but I'm

really happy now that got what I needed to carry on at Central to study Science.”

Another Central student reaping the rewards of his hard work is Franco Obuseli (pictured below) who lives in St Ann's.

Nineteen-year old Franco moved to the UK from Italy in 2015 and so he didn't have the right qualifications to progress to a higher level of study.

He has just completed GCSEs at Central after taking Functional Skills at the college.

This involved practical and applied learning to improve Maths and English and prepare for GCSEs.

His grades include an A* in Maths, plus As in Biology and Physics and two Bs in Chemistry and English Language, which means he can go on to study an Access to Higher Education course ahead of university.

Franco said: “My GCSE results were full of surprise. I spent many nights studying before the exams as I wasn't expecting the grades.

“But one of my tutors said 'you can do it Franco' and they really believed in me. I feel such a mixture of proud, confused and happy.”

Fifteen-year-old Ashira Tamber-Wolf had been home-schooled since Year 9, when she joined Central's GCSE programme especially for home-educated students last year. She's now achieved the GCSE results she needs to go and study A Levels, including three Bs and a C.

As it is the first time Ashira has been in education outside the home for a while, she hadn't known what to expect, so was really pleased when her results were good.

Ashira, who lives in Sandiacre, said: “Being at the college has definitely built up my confidence, so now I feel ready to go and do A Levels.”

Beeston students have a bright future after their GCSE success

THE BALENO is back in British showrooms after a 17-year absence to give Suzuki dealers an attractive new entrant into the family car market, writes Robert Maddox.

And all has changed. This time around we have a five-door Baleno hatchback whereas from 1995 to 1999 the model was available as a saloon or estate.

So, what’s the betting the new Baleno is going to be more popular than the previous saloon when UK drivers prefer hatchbacks to booted models.

It’s also going to prove popular by being a larger car than the Swift hatchback, so making it a more rational choice for buyers seeking extra interior space and greater boot capacity but not wanting to move up in size to the

Vitara or S-Cross models from the firm. There is no other vehicle in its class which offers more space between front and rear seats.

Six airbags, satellite navigation, Bluetooth, air conditioning and a DAB Radio are fitted as standard on all models with Radar Brake Support and Adaptive Cruise Control included in the enhanced specification of the SZ5 grade.

Engines include a new 1.0-litre three cylinder power plant representing the second application of Suzuki’s new Boosterjet technology.

The 111PS Direct Injection Turbo-charged engine delivers the same level of power and torque of a much larger capacity normally aspirated unit. A wide spread of torque is available from just 2,000rpm with CO2 emissions of 105g/km when linked to a manual transmission gearbox.

The launch of Suzuki’s first mild hybrid system employing a four-cylinder 1.2-litre SHVS engine brings CO2 emissions of 94g/km in top-of-the range cars.

Suzuki quotes EC Combined fuel consumption of 64.2mpg for the

Boosterjet engine and 70.6mpg in the case of the 1.2-litre unit.

Prices range from £12,999 for the SZ-T 1.0 -Litre Boosterjet car to £13,499 for a SZ5 version with the 1.2-litre SHVS engine.

Chris Variava are offering An attractive Personal Contract Purchase offer. Along with Suzuki finance you’ll be amazed with a very attractive low interest rate PCP with low Monthly payments.

Standard features across the

range include16-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, rear privacy glass, cruise control with speed limiter and front electric windows as well six airbags, satellite navigation, Bluetooth, air conditioning and the DAB Radio with USB connection.

The SZ5 cars further have automatic climate control, rear electric windows, a 4.2 inch central colour trip display, LED rear lights, plus the Adaptive Cruise Control and Radar Brake Support.

The brake support system monitors the road ahead by means of radar technology which works work even at high speeds, in darkness, and in rain or other bad weather.

The system prevents or mitigates a collision by means of three functions, including automatic braking.

Suzuki’s mild hybrid system is interesting in that it incorporates an integrated starter generator which acts as both a generator and starter motor.

It’s belt driven and assists the engine during vehicle take off and acceleration and also generates electricity through regenerative braking.

Apple CarPlay is the smarter and safer way to use iPhone in the Baleno. Apart from making calls, it also facilitates receiving directions for optimised traffic conditions, listening to music, accessing email, text messages and more.

Come and see us at Chris Variava the Suzuki experts in Nottingham.

Thousands of people attended events for the Heritage Open Days 2016, which took place in Broxtowe from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September. The annual event, which takes place nationally, celebrates architecture, culture and history - and offers free access to properties and events that are usually not open to the public or normally charge for admission.

The Broxtowe event was organised by Beeston & District Heritage Open Days Group and Beeston & District Civic Society. There were many events across the borough, including a classic car drop-in, a Barton Buses heritage event, a tour of Boots, films at Chilwell Arts Theatre and guided visits of Bramcote Hall, while the Canalside Heritage Centre opened its doors.

Canalside Heritage Centre Since work got under way on site at Beeston Lock, the project to convert the lock cottages in Beeston Rylands into a Heritage Centre has progressed quickly. The Trust held a busy open day at the Boat and Horses pub, which was

well attended by local residents and supporters of the project. Attractions on offer included canal boat trips, Shrek the horse and top teams of lady morris dancers.

The latest fundraising task for the Trust is to get enough votes from the public to win their bid for a grant from Marks and Spencer towards the cost of an eco-friendly heating system. To support the trust by voting, or to find out more about the project, visit the website canalsideheritagecentre.org.uk or see Facebook under ‘Beeston Canalside Heritage Centre’.

Barton Buses Open Day An open day took place full of nostalgia of old Barton Buses. It was made extra special as 2016 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of its founder, TH Barton.

As in previous years, visitors were invited to see parts of the site rarely seen by the public, where they found a wide variety of preserved company vehicles and memorabilia.

Here are some of the best photos from the various events...

The Kerry family have been supplying the people of Nottingham with fresh fruit and vegetables for 131 years - that’s an awful lot of apples.

But it is the next 131 years that boss Dean – the fourth generation of this popular local company - is thinking about with the launch of their new website.

Kerry’s are evolving and in late September they will launch an online store that will offer delivery to homes and offices across Nottingham.

Customers will be able to choose from a variety of over 150 products, as well as a selection of fruit, veg and salad boxes, all at affordable prices.

Fifty-piece business boxes have been specifically designed to ensure that they are in the best condition possible for when they arrive to your workplace.

Kerry’s will cater to the delivery needs of each business where possible. Home orders will be processed via postcode. Your area will be delivered to once a week and produce packed on the same morning to guarantee freshness.

Delivery is free on orders over £15. Home boxes range from £8.99 to £17.99, while business boxes start at £20, with the best seasonal fruit as optional extras for an additional £5. All Local News readers are entitled to 50% off their first order using the discount code found in this newspaper in their advert on page seven. The delivery day for Beeston will be on a Friday.

Adam Nanda and Reece Davies from the Beeston branch of The Nottingham Building Society are in the final stages of preparation for a gruelling 10k obstacle race, to be held in the wilds of Derbyshire, at the beginning of October.

As part of the building society’s annual awareness programme, the boys decided to enter the event to help raise money for the local charity Framework, who aim to tackle the causes and consequences of homelessness, and SportsAid.

Adam told The Local News: “We’re aiming to raise £2,000 for our chosen charities and are currently well on target to achieve that. The generosity from the public and our customers has been overwhelming.”

The X-Runner Wild Warriors event describes itself as "the ultimate obstacle race" and incorporates 70 obstacles, including Free Fall, Walk The Plank, Fire, Tightropes, Mud & Water.

Reece said: “As the event draws ever nearer, it has become quite daunting, but I’m sure Adam and myself will get through it.”

In addition to the race, the building society is hosting a charity dinner at Haveli Restaurant on Attenborough Lane, along with a raffle and entertainment.

If you would like more information, or would like to support the boys in their efforts, please pop into the Beeston branch of The Nottingham Building Society on High Road, or call 0115 925 1685.

Many local people could be forgiven for doing a double take as they’ve passed a man with a giant plastic rat strapped to his arm parading through central Beeston in recent months.

Former Broxtowe Borough Council pest controller, Adrian Dove (pictured above with his rat), is fast becoming a regular sight to people passing through the town as he touts for business with his beloved plastic rat Benjamin strapped to his arm.

Adrian, who could be described as one of life’s larger than life characters, was made redundant from his role in March of this year after 15 years of service.

Not one to sit and wallow, he decided to take what he’d learnt from his years at the council and go it alone.

He told the Beeston Local News: “I had many happy years at the council and gained a wealth of experience in all aspects of pest control.

“I was sorry to leave Broxtowe Borough Council.

“But I saw it as great opportunity to continue offering my services to the Broxtowe community as an independent business.

“I’ve made many really great contacts throughout the borough during my time here.

“All of those contacts have been very supportive in my solo venture and I'm really enjoying it.”

Adrian’s expertise can tackle all manner of problems, whether its wasps, ants or fleas, or perhaps rats and mice.

He prides himself on offering a quick personal service while, at the same time, remaining extremely competitive.

All of his work is guaranteed until the problem is resolved.

For more information about his pest control services, Adrian can be contacted on either 07925 062587 or 0115 752 4610.

15 GARDENING Keep up to date via Twitter @Nottslocalnews

Colourfence is an innovative alternative to wooden fencing and the great news is that, at last, it is available in Nottingham.

It is guaranteed for 25 years and needs nothing more than the occasional hose down.

Colourfence is a product that gives you more time to enjoy your garden and less time having to deal with broken, warped and discoloured fence panels.

It has been available elsewhere for around 12 years and had a fantastic £7 million pounds worth of sales each year.

Colourfence has been brought to Nottingham by local company Conduit Fencing Ltd.

Managing director, Peter Conduit, told The Local News: "We feel very strongly that the fit-and-forget

nature of Colourfence will appeal strongly to local people.

"People who are proud of their gardens, but who are faced every two or three years with having to repair and re-treat their fence, just when their plants and flowers have grown up it."

Colourfence is available in several colours, with or without lattice.

It is priced to be comparable to a good quality wooden fence.

All prices are published on the Colourfence website and no-obligation quotes can be received free of charge.

For more information please see the Colourfence advert on page five of this newspaper.

You can also check out the website by logging onto colourfence.co.uk.

Low Maintenance Fencing comes to Nottingham at last

Prograss have a tried and tested procedure for putting some life back into lawns that customers have almost given up with.

1) We would do an initial intensive treatment to control moss and weeds, plus tonic any existing healthy grass.

2) A few weeks later we would return with heavy-duty commercial machinery to hollow tine aerate the area with two passes to reduce any compaction and also break up the surface, so the root zone of the grass can feed and breathe.

3) We would do an intensive scarification using a 6bhp commercial scarifier to remove any dead moss, thatch and weeds to create a perfect surface for the overseed that is to follow.

4) We would then do an over-seed using a suitable seed.

5) We apply a pre-seed fertiliser to encourage seed germination and stimulate existing grass.

6) This would then be left for nature to do its their part and by spring, the lawn will be starting to look like a lawn again. We are always keen to point out that this process is not an overnight one and depending on conditions, the lawn could take a while to be where we want it to be.

7) We would then do seasonal treatments and on each visit we would do whatever the lawn requires to continue its recovery.

Contact Prograss by telephoning 01949 837367 or visit the website at pro-grass.com.

Chilwell-based Nottingham Royal Engineers are to undertake an epic 300-hour cycle ride to Gibraltar, the birthplace of the Corps of Royal Engineers, to celebrate its tercentenary. Nine soldiers from 66 Works Group, part of 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group Royal Engineers, are taking part in the ride that will see

them leave the Royal Albert Hall and arrive in Gibraltar on the 1st October. They hope their efforts will raise over £10,000 to be divided between The Royal British Legion, The Royal Engineers Association and Cancer Research UK. The idea came from Commanding Officer of 66 Works Group, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Millar.

He said: “The Corps of Royal Engineers celebrate their 300th anniversary this year. Our motto is 'Ubique' which means everywhere and I wanted to reflect that and our history in the challenge. I’m a keen cyclist and decided that a cycle ride to our birth place would be an ideal way to mark this momentous occasion, whilst raising money at

the same time. We chose the Albert Hall as our start point because the Royal Engineers designed and oversaw its construction nearly 150 years ago.”

“It’s amazing what those guys achieved, especially when you think of the engineering equipment they had then compared to today. It’s simply a stunning building and their work is still remembered by us today. In recognition of the work of Captain Fowke, the top student of each Clerk of Works (Construction) course held at the Royal School of Military Engineering is presented with the Fowkes award.”

Nine cyclists will be taking part in the ride, a distance of almost 1,800 miles and will be backed up by a six-man support team. Anyone who would like to show their support by making a donation can do so via justgiving.com/teams/Ex-Sapper-Vuelta. Based at Chetwynd Barracks, Chilwell, the team has been training up to five times a week in readiness for the challenge ahead.

Former Nottingham Trent University Clifton Campus student Crista Cullen scored for Great Britain Women as they beat Netherlands to win gold at the Rio Olympics. The game ended 3-3 but GB went on to win a dramatic penalty shootout.

West Bridgford’s Helen Richardson-Walsh netted in the shootout, as

did former Beeston Hockey Club player Hollie Webb, who scored the decisive penalty. Newark’s Shona McCallin was also part of the winning team as GB created history to win their first Olympic gold in the sport.

Webb said: “This is what we dreamed of and now we’ve got it.

“No-one can ever take that away from us. We’ve now gone unbeaten through an Olympic tournament, which is unreal. It’s the first time we’ve been to the final, so we’re over the moon.

“We always knew it was going to be very close but physically we stuck to it. We really put the legwork in

to try and get them on the counter and get up the pitch.”

Danny Kerry, Great Britain coach, added: “We had to defend, we had to dig trenches, but we changed things in the last quarter and it paid off. Eight of the group are multiple Olympians and we needed that experience.”
