MAJOR PROJECT UNDER WAY AT CLIFTON CAMPUS A major project is well under way to create a new pavilion and teaching buildings with state-of-the-art facilities for Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus.Midlands-based contractor G F Tomlinson has marked progress on the energy efficient development, known as the ‘Heart of the Campus’, with a topping out ceremony. To commemorate the landmark, Professor Yvonne Barnett was on hand from the university. The development involves the construction of generous communal areas in and around a pavilion building. This encourages students and staff to relax and socialise in the large IT-enabled spaces, bespoke study pods and the external classroom. The scheme will also see the creation of a new teaching building to accommodate more than 800 students, with flat and tiered spaces to suit teaching requirements. It will also contain high-quality IT systems and a covered terrace and a glazed façade to match the newly constructed pavilion.Andy Sewards, director at G F Tomlinson Group, said: “This is a landmark stage reached

for the project which will help to transform the university’s Clifton campus. “We are delighted to be working with Nottingham Trent University, we have developed a good team spirit and are really pleased with the progress being made on site.“Once complete, the scheme will help the university to regenerate the campus so that it leads the way on innovation, sustainability and enhancing the student experience.”Designed to achieve BREEAM Excellence, the development will adopt high standards with regard to energy performance and sustainability. For example, the pavilion roof will be made from arched concrete ceiling panels fitted with photo-

voltaic panels and the adjoining rectory will be refurbished and fitted with a central roof lantern to provide added natural daylight.Professor Yvonne Barnett, pro-vice chancellor at Nottingham Trent University, said: “These two new buildings will provide an amazing learning and teaching facility for our students and staff.“This excellent facility will support the high quality and innovative approach to learning and teaching in which the staff and students of NTU participate and which has recently been recognised nationally in three Guardian HE Awards.”The Heart of the Campus Development will be open to students and staff from Autumn 2015.

CLIFTON HEROES Nottingham City Transport launched its ‘Search for a Clifton Superhero’ campaign in 2012 as a way of celebrating NCT buses serving Clifton for 60 years. Local people were asked to nominate “anyone who lives, works or studies in Clifton, who has gone the extra mile by putting significant energy, commitment and effort into the local community”. The winner would get their very own NCT bus named after them.Pensioner Michael Handley was revealed as the first Clifton Superhero, thanks to his years of voluntarily picking up litter on the estate. Since that time, such was the popularity of the campaign with residents and the surge of commendable nominations, that the 2014’s UK Bus Operator of the Year went on to name more buses after Clifton Superheroes.Four more vehicles have now been presented to the worthy winners by Labour MP for Nottingham South, Lilian Greenwood, at a special ceremony at Clifton football ground. The final Clifton Superheroes voted for by the public were announced as...Barbara Green: A community and charity worker within Clifton who raises money for various causes, including Pancreatic Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease and the Nottingham Neo-natal Unit. Barbara also supports local youth work within Clifton.

Karen Humble: Founder and Chair of Clifton Community and Family Support Group. CCFSG is a small local charity that supports families in need, plus the wider community, by providing activities that reduce social isolation, increase self-esteem and, in addition, help to promote community spirit.Maria Watson: Fundraiser and supplier of food hampers to the struggling families of Clifton, Ruddington and Silverdale through a local Facebook Donations Page. Maria also runs a loan service for wheelchairs. Promoting and supporting local people with their businesses is another vital service Maria provides.Wayne Kidger: Football coach and runs soccer school at Clifton All Whites. Wayne is also a fundraiser and school governor.

Each Clifton Superhero was also presented with a certificate by Lilian Greenwood to mark their achievement. She said: “I was hugely honoured to be asked to officially award their buses to Nottingham City Transport’s final four Clifton Superheroes. Just like NCT have done for over 60 years, each one of these heroes makes a valuable contribution to benefit the local community and this high profile recognition is fully deserved by all of them.”Commenting on the sight of his bus, Wayne Kidger, one of the official winners, said: “I can’t believe I have my very own bus. The people of Clifton have relied on Nottingham City Transport for so many years. For me to be recognised by NCT in this way is fantastic and I really can’t wait for my friends and family to spot my bus on the road.”

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CENTRE TO OPENNottingham City Council is officially reopening the Clifton Young People’s Centre after a major investment to renovate the building. Work took place in two phases and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in March marked the completion of the £518,000 revamp. The centre will become an important hub for providing activities and services to children, families and the wider community. It has some great new features, including a newly-refurbished dance studio and redecoration of the sports hall. The former Green Lane Youth Centre is also now equipped with a state-of-the-art music system, large screen TVs for gaming and films, table tennis, pool table, air hockey and a music studio.A group of children and young people were involved in choosing the new name and helped to pick a colour scheme. Although it will mostly be a youth centre, there will be activities for children from birth to age 19 and some of the children’s centre activities will also take place there. It’s taken just five months to complete the work, which also includes a new chill-out area and large kitchen to allow young people to cook and

prepare food. Along with structural and building repairs, many of the corridors and external areas have been spruced up and look much brighter.Cllr David Mellen said: “With all the work now complete, Clifton Young People’s Centre can really be a centre of excellence for young people. “This is something we said we would do to improve services for young people, so I’m delighted to see that this project is now ready to enhance the lives of not just young people, but the whole community.“There was a need for a new and updated centre in Clifton and we saw the importance of investing in somewhere children and young people can socialise and meet new friends.”The work was completed by GF Tomlinson. Construction director, Nick Banks, said: “We are pleased to be handing over the completed youth centre and we hope it will serve many young people for generations to come. “We are proud to be working with the City Council and building on our working relationship by helping to deliver a number of leisure services across Nottinghamshire.”

CLIFTON STUDENTS MAKE TRIP TO ITALYStudents from Farnborough Academy in Clifton are buzzing with excitement after returning from a school trip to Italy. For five of the students from the school, it was their first time abroad and for many of them their first taste of foreign travel beyond package beach holidays. Forty GCSE students jetted off on the trip to the Bay of Naples to see one of the world’s most famous volcanoes, Mount Vesuvius, and the remains of the Roman town of Pompeii. The school is increasing its trips and excursions to offer its pupils wider learning experiences.“Going to Italy was the first time that I have ever been on a plane, it was really good. I had an amazing time and it was really nice to meet new people and get along with everyone,” said 14-year-old Helena Rose.Helena’s mum Caroline says the trip has had a huge impact: “Helena came back full of enthusiasm and conversation. She told me all about the journey to the top of Vesuvius and the great achievement that gave her.“She spoke with empathy about the people in Pompeii and how they would have suffered because of the eruption of the volcano. The trip has given her enthusiasm, confidence and above all the desire and passion to want to learn.”

Other students who went on the trip wholeheartedly agree. Sinead Parish said “I will never forget the Italy trip; it will be with me for life. The teachers that went made the trip so brilliant because they were fun, caring and kind.”Fifteen-year-old Connor Cooper-Lane added: “Our trip to Naples was fun. It was my first trip abroad and it has enticed me to want to go abroad again to experience more culture. I enjoyed every moment of it.”During their four days away, the group of geography and history students hiked up Mount Vesuvius, learnt about Roman life in Pompeii and Herculaneum, and witnessed volcanic steam pools at Solfatara, a huge volcanic crater They also got a taste of Italian food and culture sampling the famous local pizza and ice cream and watching an Italian musical theatre show.Head of Geography, Sarah Baum, who organised the trip, said: “One of our students, Connor, was so happy to be there he just smiled the whole time. A lot of the students have told me they now want to go and travel and see more as they’ve realised going abroad is about more than just sitting on the beach. “Parents have told the school what a fantastic time their children have had too. The kids were fascinated by what they saw. And it’s not just helped with their studies. They’ve also come back more confident about being in foreign situations and with different people.”

Executive headteacher of the Trent Academies Group, Phil Crompton, said: “Only recently there were stories in the national press about research showing children are more likely to get good grades if they take part in extra-curricular activities like school trips. We want to provide a lot more of these types of opportunities for students at Farnborough.”The school has already booked to go back to Naples again next year and this summer a group of Farnborough pupils will join students from fellow Trent Academies Group school, Rushcliffe, on a trip to Malawi where they will help run a summer school for African children. There’s also a busy programme of UK excursions under way at Farnborough, including a history trip to the Black Country museum a few weeks ago and a day at the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre coming up.

TRAM CAUSED TERRIBLE DISRUPTIONI’m not sure what planet John (Local News - April 2015) is from, but his assertion that disruption – which is still continuing – because of the tram “wasn’t that bad” suggests that it isn’t anywhere near planet earth. The organisation of the tram works has been appalling and bottlenecks like that at the junction between Green Lane and Southchurch Drive – which should have been dealt with as soon as possible – have been in a sorry state for the whole two to three years since the work started. It’s hard to believe that it was only early April 2015 that the four-way temporary lights were finally removed. The same goes for both the top and bottom ends of Southchurch.Maybe John would like to tell his story directly to the owners of the Chinese takeaway or the baker’s shop who closed down, or to the other shopkeepers who have told me openly that they may never recover, and that the so-called compensation which the council touted came with conditions attached, which did little to balance the actual losses incurred. Furthermore, I’ve been driving through Beeston

along the High Street since it reopened and the place is like a ghost town. Clifton was lucky in that respect, since it was never completely cut off. Not so large parts of Beeston, thanks to the semi-permanent gridlock on University Boulevard and total closure of the High Street, compounded by excuse after excuse as to why work is almost a year behind schedule, and by the unbelievably inept sanctioning of numerous unrelated road works across the city.God help us all if there is a Phase Three. Those involved might want to offer John a job in their public relations department if there is.Martin Wilford

Why do I turn my face to peer? Why do I look again? Not just the iron and the magnet hereBut opposite poles a hair’s breadth clearOr suns and their circling planets nearDrawn by attraction plain.

MEG IS WOMAN OF THE YEAR Becoming the ‘Miss Slinky’, followed by ‘Woman of the Year’ for East Leake, has been an amazing experience and a far cry from the Meg of the past. Personal tragedies had taken their toll and had left her at an extremely low ebb.Meg had also taken on a new job that meant she would be spending a lot of time on her own, driving the long distance to and from work. This led to regular stops at petrol stations, which can be because of the chocolate bars available at the kiosk point. Weight gain followed as inevitably chocolate became her comforter. She never seemed to feel well and had chest infections one after the other for what seemed like an eternity. Associating this with carrying too much extra weight never crossed her mind and when she became pregnant, this was a licence to eat whatever took her fancy spiralling her weight totally out of control. After having her beautiful daughter, she could not shift the extra weight and had to continue wearing her maternity clothes, telling herself that she was far too busy to do anything about it at the time. It was only when it started to have a real impact on her breathing that she knew something had to change or things would only get worse.Meg had been to Slimming World in the past, so knew that it did work, so decided to give it

another go. After all, she had nothing to lose but lots to gain.“Stepping through that door has honestly changed everything for not only me, but for my

whole family,” said Meg. “I always leave the group armed with recipe ideas for the week ahead, which has made the real difference for me. I want to help others feel as good as I do and so have now trained as a consultant and will be

MAY GARDEN NOTESBy John Draper

May is one of the most exciting gardening months of the year. There are seeds to sow, patio pots and hanging baskets to be planted up. Vegetables such as runner beans and green beans will soon boost the production in any area designated for food crops, or you can simply sow seeds of carrot and beetroot amongst your bedding plants. In the garden, tulips should still be blooming and decorative shrubs such as cherry blossom and rhododendrons will be making a striking show.Beds & BordersIn sheltered areas, sowing seed and planting out tender bedding plants can be undertaken early in the month. The end of May is the earliest that we can expect frosty nights not to be a fatal event. Take your pick of when it’s best for you to plant outside - either early if you are prepared to cover your plants when a frost is forecast or later in the month to avoid playing weather watch. The LawnMow the grass as often as you are able and start to reduce the cutting height of the mower to get to the ideal height for summer. If you cut the grass in summer to a minimum of 20mm and it is well fed, then the lawn will become thick and strong so that new weed seedlings don’t get a chance to thrive. If weeds are a problem use a selective weedkiller to kill them off. For maximum weed control apply liquid lawn weedkillers halfway between

mowings. While you’re mowing, take note of any bare patches, moss and weeds and deal with any problems you see.If all this sounds like hard work Greener Gardens can do it for you. This is a great time to get started, so call Greener Gardens to arrange a free, no-obligation quotation on 0115 837 8439 or visit us greenergardens.co.uk/ Patio Tubs & BasketsAs colourful displays from tubs, containers and hanging baskets are some of the most important summer garden features, it pays to pay attention to your patio and container plants now.If your patio lacks structure, pot up long-term, permanent plants, such as small trees, shrubs – especially evergreens – herbaceous perennials and even fruit for a productive patio. To get the best from all established plants, give them a good feed. Controlled-release or continuous-release feeds are excellent choices, as they release their nutrients as the plants need

them and go on feeding for up to six months.Check containers regularly and water whenever necessary to keep the compost evenly moist. Adding a water-retention gel to the compost will absorb water and act as a reservoir for plant roots, helping to reduce watering frequency. If you have a greenhouse or similar protected structure, you can start planting up tubs and hanging baskets with summer bedding, ready to put out at the end of May or early June, whenever the fear of frosts has passed. Starting them indoors means they will come into flower earlier in the summer.Plant up your patio pots, tubs and hanging baskets with the fuschias, geraniums, petunias and other trailing and bush plants that will provide colour for the rest of the summer. It’s easy to create cascades of colour to brighten up the drabbest corners.Regular watering and feeding will keep your containers looking fantastic all summer.

CONGRATULATIONS TO APRIL’S WINNER Well done to April’s competition winner who won a pair of tickets to visit Twycross Zoo. Joan Nelson was drawn out of the hat of the correct entrants, who all said that Twycross Zoo has opened in 1963.The zoo opened on a site in Leicestershire. It was initially a comparatively modest collection, but it has grown into one of the major British zoos and it now attracts over 450,000 visitors a year. Situated near the small village of Twycross, the Zoo occupies over 40 acres and is set in open countryside. Despite its rural location, it is only four miles from the M42/A42 - which links the M1 and M6 - making it readily accessible from anywhere in central England. Q: WHERE WILL THIS YEAR’S T20 FINALS DAY BE HELD?

KAYAK CLUB TAKE ON WINDS AND WAVESA select band of Nottingham Kayak Club racers made the journey to Gailey Canoe Club, near Wolverhampton. The wind, rain and bouncy conditions on the canal had obviously put the others off but for those who did race, the journey was worth it.Nottingham Kayak Club only saw paddlers taking on the four-mile course. In the fastest singles division over this distance, Imre Kucksa had a storming race, despite the bouncy conditions. He finished in second place, just seconds behind first place, and he was also promoted. Fellow club paddler Dave Hadley finished in third and Kevin Tennyson was fourth.

Also racing over four miles was Sarah Millest. She survived the elements, made trickier by paddling canoe which has no rudder to make steering easier, to take third place.Racing in double canoe were Mick and Kath Nadal. This well-practised pair had a good race, despite the strong wind, to take second place in their race. Nottingham Kayak Club was founded by Alan Witham in the 1960s from ex-members of the Peveril School Canoe Club. Some of those original members are still paddling and helping run sessions today. Others are still involved in canoeing as officials.Early premises were under a hotel on the banks of the Nottingham Canal, in the centre of Nottingham City Centre.

MILK RACE LAUNCH EVENT HELD IN NOTTINGHAM An event to launch the return of the Milk Race for a third successive year to Nottingham took place in the Old Market Square. Elite cyclist Katie Archibald joined Robin Hood Tim Pollard, along with representatives from Nottingham City Council and Milk Race sponsors The Dairy Council and Dairy Co, on an eight-person Pedibus last month. The Milk Race will return on Sunday 24th May. The country’s biggest single-day race will once again see the sport’s most elite cyclists racing around the city in front of massive crowds of cheering spectators. The Milk Race this year joins the Milk Schools Cycling Challenge, Cycle Live and the Tour of Britain in a summer ‘Festival of Cycling’ across the city. This summer will also see work start on the development of an ambitious cycle path network and route maps, new paths built alongside tram routes and, plus the opening of the new outdoor cycle track at the newly built Harvey Hadden leisure centre.Nottingham’s commitment to its status as a premier cycling city is also shown by the recent allocation of £6.1m of funding from the Local Enterprise Partnership, specifically to develop a safe, modern cycling infrastructure around the city to enable more people to commute to work and school.
