Message from our Principal

It is hard to believe we are already in the final month of the 2020-2021 school year. This year has been like no other in our educational experience and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making it a successful one. Our dedicated staff learned to shift from one mode of learning to another multiple times, demonstrating their flexibility and patience. Our students have demonstrated the same skills while also doing their best to maintain a positive attitude through the given restrictions resulting from COVID. Our families and community mem-bers are appreciated for supporting the school by following health protocols and being under-standing of the challenges. Together, we were able to demonstrate our strength and unity. We will get through this pandemic.

Through the month of June, continue to encourage your child(ren) to be engaged in their learn-ing by arriving regularly and on time. The outcome will be more positive when students engage in their education and are prepared to develop the skills they require for success. Our school has been able to provide technology to many families in need and we hope that this has allowed your child(ren) to get the most from their education. We will communicate a plan to have tech-nology returned to school later in the month.

Information regarding school start up in the Fall will be shared as it becomes available. Thank you to those families who completed the survey by June 1 to indicate if they will keep their child(ren) in remote learning for 2021-2022. This information allows us to plan accordingly for stu-dents who will be returning to us in September. Requests for modes of learning has now closed. Families who did not complete the survey will have their child(ren) return to Fred C. Cook PS in September.

I would like make special note of the findings in British Columbia of 215 remains of children in the residential school system. As we honor National Indigenous History in June, I hope every staff member and family will acknowledge the shameful experiences in Canadian history. Each month, SCDSB recognizes various communities through heritage and history awareness. I wel-come our FCC community to reach out to the school to offer support in sharing your own herit-age to help us build a more inclusive community. Whether 1 student or 100, it is our community obligation to ensure every student is reflected in our teaching, celebrations and events. A list of heritage days/months can be found on the SCDSB website, which I encourage you to visit. It is also encouraged to engage in conversations with your child(ren) about what they are learning in school related to equity, diversity and inclusion, and how they see themselves reflected in their educational experiences.

Thank you again for your commitment and I look forward to continuing on this journey with you.

Sincerely,

Kulbir Dhaliwal

COVID-19 School Screening Tool

Each day, families are asked to ensure that their child(ren) complete the COVID-19

school screening tool prior to coming to school.

The updated provincial direction states that students and staff with any new or worsen-

ing symptoms of COVID-19 (as indicated in the screening tool), even those with only one

symptom, must stay home until:

They receive a negative COVID-19 test result;

They receive an alternative diagnosis by a health care professional; or,

It has been 10 days since their symptom onset and they are feeling better.

In addition, all asymptomatic household contacts of symptomatic individuals are re-

quired to quarantine until the symptomatic household member receives a negative

COVID-19 test result or receives an alternative diagnosis by a health care professional.

School Council On behalf of council, I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer break!

This year has definitely been one like no other but we made it through! I am so very proud

of our children and how resilient, hard working and flexible they have been.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to or attended some of our online and virtual

events that were organized for our family community. We tried to “think outside of the box"

when planning the events this year and hope they were enjoyed! They ranged from an in-

ternet safety seminar for parents to family paint nights and the family fun challenges. We

hope that next year we can return to a little more of a “norm" and host some in person

events if safe to do so.

Finally, thank you to our amazing council that attended meetings, brainstormed and

worked as a great team in engaging our school community and doing a great job to make

us all feel a little more connected in a very challenging time.

Happy summer and stay safe!!

Rosi Martin, Council Chair

Take math outdoors this summer! Are you looking for ways to promote and extend your child’s

math learning in the summer? Take math outside! Many of the everyday summer activities that

your child engages in provide opportunities for making math practical through meaningful math

explorations

Number

· Count collections of objects found in nature or on a scavenger hunt

· Calculate rates and speed during running, biking and obstacle races

· Estimate the heights and lengths of natural and manmade objects outside

Algebra

· Find examples of growing and shrinking patterns in nature

· Code your friend. One person is the coder and the other is the robot. The coder must in-

struct the robot on how to navigate a path or do a dance around the yard

Spatial

· Use a park map to plan a route and travel to a new location

· Go on a shape hunt and find shapes in the natural environment

· Examine leaves and other objects to find symmetry

· Estimate and determine elapsed time of road trips and adventures

Data

· Keep a tally of the different types of birds that come to the feeder

· Track and graph daily temperatures over time

· Track the growth of plants in a vegetable garden and examine how they change over

time

Financial Literacy

· Determine a budget and calculate the costs to refresh a garden

· Set up a lemonade stand and determine costs and sales goals

· Donate gently used outdoor items that you’re done with for others to enjoy

Have fun adding some math joy to your outdoor experiences this summer.

Get outside and play

Active play does more than help kids to achieve the 60 minutes of physical activity they need every day, it supports their development in many ways – especially when the play is outdoors, self-directed and fun. This allows kids to test boundaries and problem-solve, develop social skills and resolve conflict, and learn to control their emotions and behavior. Encourage activities that support physical distancing and that fall within current provincial or municipal COVID-19 prevention guide-lines.

Active play outdoors in the fresh air and nature also helps to improve mood and lower stress. Sup-port your child to play outside with friends in the neighborhood and at your local park as much as possible.

Hot weather has arrived

Help your child stay cool during the day by giving them plenty of water and encouraging them to drink even if they’re not thirsty. Kids don’t sweat or release heat from their bodies as easily as adults, so they can become dehydrated quickly. Dress them in lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and don’t forget to put sunscreen on before they head outside.

For more tips to help your family stay cool this summer, visit the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.
