Bryan was born at the Holbrook Hospital and never moved away from the district that he loved. He was most at home in the Wantagong Valley, having grown up on the property “Moombril”, with parents, John & Judy and older sisters, Debbie, Michelle & Bronwyn. In later years, he moved with his family to the property “Ulladulla”, managing the farm which was across the road from where he spent his childhood. Bryan was well known throughout the wider community for his ability to train “uncontrollable” dogs and his ability to match someone who needed a working dog to one that suited their ability and needs – he rarely went anywhere without a ute load of dogs, even going so far as to have one appear as a special guest at his wedding, which he then whistled into the back of the ute as he left for his honeymoon. His love for his work and the outdoors was only eclipsed by his love for family, in particular his sons Alex and Jake who were never far from their father’s side and at the time of Bryan’s stroke were planning to set up a working team together and were full of plans for the future. All families have that one special person that glues them all together and is the favourite with the extended nieces and nephews – without a doubt Bryan was that person – he would invariably have a tribe of children following him around the paddocks on weekends and school holidays, delighting in teasing them and teaching them how to lamb mark and ride motorbikes. Many of them were given driving lessons by Uncle Fred, firstly sitting up on his lap and then, when their legs were long enough, taking the wheel while he bravely stood on the back feeding out hay. Sleepovers were frequent and he would show off his culinary skills with his homemade sausage rolls or his “piece de resistance “ crumbed sausages with onion gravy – piled high on a bed of mashed potatoes which he would artfully arrange using a piece of sewer pipe as a mold. He loved showing family around his little patch of heaven and weekend visitors were always treated to hilltop BBQs that took in views of the valley. He would sometimes venture up through an area known locally as the “tin mines” – recalling the old huts that used to be in the area or take Sunday drives that would usually include lunch at the Jingellic Pub. On his birthday in 2012 Bryan suffered a major stroke (thanks Brad & Adam our caring local Ambos) and spent 3 months in rehabilitation in Albury, throughout the 3 months he managed to retain and regain enough skills to get back home – despite, or because, he was told that this may not be possible. In December of the same year he was diagnosed with bowel cancer that had already progressed to 4 th stage liver tumours. Once again he was told that his prognosis was poor, once again he met his latest hurdle with determination and an ever present smile. He started treatment with the hope that he might just beat the odds enough to be able to have a liver resection, when it became apparent that this was not to be he decided he had more important things to do, he would go around his cattle on a mobility scooter and still had a tribe of dogs sitting on the back. He hosted his last big party at the Holbrook Races and partied like a rockstar with a bevy of pretty nieces around him and a pocket full of money from his winning bets. Bryan’s one desire was to stay at home surrounded by family and this was made possible with the assistance of some wonderful local medical staff – ultimately his passing was swift and peaceful – he was still reading “The Land” 2 hours before he slipped away. He had planned his unique farewell and in keeping with his lifestyle it was outdoors, under some gumtrees, the noise of sheep in the background. He had requested that people not wear suits but rather come in the everyday workwear – his reasoning becoming clear when his hearse became bogged and a large contingency of his mates had to muscle up to send him on his way, he would have been the first person to laugh at this minor mishap and everyone that attended recognised that aspect of his character with the ceremony truly being a celebration of the life of a well liked, extraordinary man. He will be missed.

HOLBROOK LANDCAREHOLBROOK LANDCAREHOLBROOK LANDCAREHOLBROOK LANDCARE Celebrate National Wattle Day on 1st September and help us plant 700 wattles on Mt McKenzie, a private conservation area near Woomargama. We need some fit and able volunteers to help us. Join us for a couple of hours or come for the day. Lunch will be provided if you RSVP by 31st August. Have you got revegetation planned for 2016 that isn’t eligible for Bushlinks? Holbrook Landcare is looking at putting in an application for the 20 Million Trees Program—let us know if you want trees next year so we can apply for funding. The 2015 NSW Landcare & Local Land Services Conference will be held in Orange on 1st-3rd September. There is support available for Landcarers in the community to attend with HLN—give us a call if interested. It is a chance to meet other Landcare people from around the state and hear some of the great projects and ideas. Mullengandra Landcare are hosting a Community Tree Planting Day on Saturday 29th August at 9:30 - 1:00pm. Come and join in this social day and plant trees that will help connect and conserve native habitat, protect wildlife in our local community, repair and prevent erosion and improve water quality. Lunch and social gathering at the Mullengandra Hall will be provided. The day is open to all ages. Please bring gumboots, hat, water bottle, garden gloves and trowels (if you have them). We hope you can donate some of your time and get involved in this Mullengandra Landcare project. For further information please call Guy Corbett on 0419 648 171. HOLBROOK CWA’S HOLBROOK CWA’S HOLBROOK CWA’S HOLBROOK CWA’S INTERNATIONAL DAYINTERNATIONAL DAYINTERNATIONAL DAYINTERNATIONAL DAY

Congratulations to the 46 students, and their teachers, of years 5/6 from Holbrook Public and St. Patricks Schools for all their enthusiasm and hard work in their presentations on Italy, the Country of Study by CWA for 2015. This morning was held in July at the Holbrook Library Complex. St Pats students gave a power point presentation of the classroom research which was shown on the big screen. Two students at a time spoke on a fascinating variety of famous citizens of Italy, including Leonardo da Vinci, Isabella Rossellini, Enzo Ferrari & Montessori. Holbrook Public School students had their research topics contained in 20 individual pizza boxes!! As each box was opened it revealed information & illustrations which 2 students then spoke about. Their topics included the fashion industry of Italy, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, car racing, and the history and geographical features of Italy. Mrs Jenny Parer, the Guest Speaker, then spoke about her recent trip to the northern city of Bolzano, to see the Otzi Mummy, discovered frozen in a glacier high in the Alps. This body is thought to be 5300 years old and is of a 45 year old man who is now found in a scientific laboratory in Bolzano. The students were fascinated by the analysis of his last meal, his cause of death, and that his DNA study revealed that Otzi has 19 living genetic relatives! A special Italian morning tea, complete with red, white and green balloons (the colours of the Italian flag), included biscuits in the shape of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and an amazing erupting volcano cake complete with flowing lava, a la Vesuvius. Thank you to everyone who made this such as interesting and enjoyable morning.

Margaret Higgins, Freda Turner, Janet Kemp, Jenny Parer & Pek Fong Condon display the Italian morning tea delights.

BILLABONG HIGHBILLABONG HIGHBILLABONG HIGHBILLABONG HIGH There is a significant amount of illness around at the moment. There has also been a further case of whooping cough. Parents are advised to keep their children home if they are sick and to seek medical advice as required. A medical certificate is required for missed assessment tasks and they also can serve as a notification of an absence. Our senior students are preparing for their HSC Trial Exams that are on this week. This will provide good feedback as they commence their final few weeks of study in their HSC subjects. Congratulations to all the students who volunteered to help out at the Bernie O’Connor Competition at Yerong Creek. Their support enables such events to run smoothly. The boys Under 15 AFL Team is finalising their preparations for their Swan Shield quarter final match in Sydney this week. They are playing Leichhardt Sydney Secondary College. Good luck to the boys.

Who Am I ?Who Am I ?Who Am I ?Who Am I ? Though I’m a 100 years old this year, I am not the oldest in Holbrook. I have enjoyed participating in the lives of Holbrookians. I have enjoyed watching plays, seeing happy faces at weddings and 21sts. I’ve listened in on many a dinner conversation. Though I’ve never left Holbrook, I’ve been cultured through all the events held in Holbrook. And during all these I’ve remained quiet. Yes I’ve had a face lift or two but then who doesn’t want to look good, regardless of age. I understand some groups in Holbrook are intending to help me celebrate my birthday with some community events later this year. I’ll probably blush when it comes around, but regardless of my appearance, I look forward to all of Holbrook residents joining me in my celebration. Watch this space for further details. NO, I will not tell what I know about you, but I do welcome you sharing stories about me.

It has been very exciting this week with helpers working in the garden. Photos of our effects can be seen on our facebook page. Our tool shed is up thanks to James Bartel-Waller and Nick from Landcare. Fred Schuur and Geoff McPherson have also been helping out with the chook enclosure. All participants’ involvement is greatly appreciated. We are still planting cuttings for the Auxillary Fete and getting ready for spring, which is just around the corner. Hard to believe. We have been refreshing garden beds and harvesting Brussel sprouts, cabbages, broccoli, spinach and celery which have been keeping the Frampton Court residents well stocked up. A few items we are needing to finish our project before spring are 3m treated poles, small pots, bricks or pavers, bags of cement. If anyone can help with any of these items please let Sue know on 0427 369 570. We

still have jars of marmalade for sale in various sizes. Contact Sue and she can arrange to drop off. Still if anyone would like to join us in the garden we mainly meet on Tuesdays at 9.30am. Sue is there other days as well. All welcome. The Holbrook Community Garden will be holding a meeting to gather community ideas for further development and activities. We encourage all members of the community to support this local sustainability project that provides our community with the opportunity be active, get involved and to produce healthy organic food in a fun family-friendly environment. The meeting will be held at the Community Garden on Friday 28 August at 4pm.

CANCER SUPPORT GROUPCANCER SUPPORT GROUPCANCER SUPPORT GROUPCANCER SUPPORT GROUP On Thursday 6th August, the Holbrook/Culcairn Cancer Support Group held a very successful fundraiser at the IGA Market Day Brekky Club. It was a very chilly day, but an enjoyable time just the same! A big thank you to Roger & Marg Geddes & staff at IGA for their generous help and the community who purchased items from BBQ, cake/produce stall, and wood raffle. We were able to raise $887. Thank you also to Russell Ross and Roy Willis for cutting the trailer load of wood for the raffle - which was won by Yvonne Roach. We very much appreciated all the support.

On Tuesday 29 September during the Sept/Oct school holiday period at the Jindera Sports and Recreational Ground the young people in the Shire will be able to experience for FREE the growing sporting phenomenon - Bubble Soccer plus the added attraction of an enormous jumping castle. Bubble Soccer is guaranteed to be fantastic fun to play, hilarious to watch, and a great form of exercise. All participants who wish to give this activity a go will be encouraged to play a game of soccer while in their protected inflatable Bubble. The boys had a very successful fun day bringing home the winners’ medals for the day.

Holbrook Public School advanced to the finals of the state wide Tony Lockett Shield by way of a heart stopping, extra time win against Blaxland East Primary School. Played in perfect conditions at Emu Plains. Holbrook were slow to find their feet and struggled to win the loose ball but managed to be level with Blaxland at quarter time via a Braydon Eddy goal. In the second quarter, Blaxland turned up the heat with their fast players taking charge and running the ball to kick three goals to Holbrook’s one via Fletcher Parker. Blaxland held a 14 point lead at half time which they increased to 26 points late in the third term. A late third quarter goal by Ewan Mackinlay enable Holbrook to reduce Blaxland’s lead back to a still sizeable 19 points, considering that Holbrook had only scored 22 points in the first three quarters this was a big task. At the final break, coach Adam Preston made several changes, including ruckman Ben Klose moving to defence and Braydon Eddy taking over the ruck role. These moves had an immediate impact, with Holbrook winning the majority of centre clearances. Suddenly Holbrook came alive via the efforts of Braydon, Fletcher Parker and Jack de Steiger. Ewan Mackinlay was in everything and kicked three goals for the quarter playing in the centre. With two minutes to go Holbrook levelled the scores but just could not manage a final point to win the game. At the siren, scores were locked at 53 points each as Holbrook kicked five goals one for the quarter and Blaxland two straight goals. Under the rules, five minutes each way had to be played which was a big requirement in the 23 degree conditions following four 15 minute quarters. But Holbrook had the momentum and kicked the only goal in the first period of extra via Henry Gulliver to hold a six point lead at the change-over. Blaxland raised their efforts and kicked an early goal to again level the scores. Only a timely smoother from Ben Close saved Holbrook from again being in big trouble. With two minutes left, Ewan Mackinlay won the ball from the centre and charged forward. In desperation, his opponent’s ankle tapped him and he fell to the ground. The umpire correctly awarded a 25m penalty which put Ewan within range, he kicked truly and Holbrook

hit the front. With little time on the clock Blaxland broke from the centre but was held up by a committed Holbrook defence who controlled the ball and soaked up the remaining time to secure a fine and very hard fought win. All the boys should be proud of their courageous efforts. Goal kickers: Ewan Mackinlay 5, Fletcher Parker 2 and singles to Braydon Eddy, Jack de Steiger and Henry Gulliver.

11am Sunday 30th August 2015 at clubrooms Promoting volunteering to young people and assisting the longevity of so many Riverina volunteer organisations is the aim of Riverina Eastern Regional Organisations of Council’s (REROC) new Take Charge and Volunteer project, in conjunction with Greater Hume Shire Council. The ongoing battle to attract and retain young volunteers is not new, but by partnering with Riverina organisations and together, developing innovative ideas, REROC hopes to connect young people with the groups who need them the most. A youth survey carried out in conjunction with REROC’s Take Charge Riverina Youth Leadership Forum 2013 revealed a large percentage of the 120 students at the forum not only thought volunteering was important in their home town, but that most of them really wanted to become volunteers. The Take Charge and Volunteer project will assist on both sides of the volunteer relationship – with both the organisation and the volunteer. The www.takecharge.org.au website is looking for Riverina organisations ready to embrace the challenge of this new project, sign up, and list their volunteering opportunities, which young volunteers can search for via their industry of interest or where they live. When the volunteer finds something they are interested in, they can register their interest and a volunteering relationship will be formed with the organisation. If organisations prefer, a simple training session can be held in your Local Government Area where a member of your organisation can be guided through preparing for accepting and working with young volunteers, and how to best use www.takecharge.org.au. The project will also look at rewarding young volunteers for their efforts. Any organisation wishing to be involved in the project, or wanting to attend a training session, can contact Greater Hume Shire Council’s Library & Youth Services Development Officer Susan Kane on 0417 212 069 or email [email protected]. Further information is also available from REROC’s Regional Youth and Communities contact, Kylie Dunstan on [email protected] or 0437 863 426; or REROC Executive Officer, Julie Briggs [email protected] or 6931 9050. The project has been funded by the New South Wales Government through Youth Opportunities. You can also go to www.takecharge.org.au for information or to Sign Up
