Laser Cladding for Repair
Laser cladding can be used as a methodto rebuild damaged or worn areas of valu-able machine components, dies or molds.Laser build up welding produces 100%dense, near net shape structures thatrequire minimal post-process machining.
Laser Cladding
A laser beam is used to generate amelt pool on the surface of a metalworkpiece. A metal powder is fedinto the melt pool, and rapidlysolidifies forming a track. Depositsare 100% dense and metallurgicallybonded to the substrate.
Advantages
The laser cladding process has aminimal heat input into the part compared to PTA, TIG or MIG weldprocesses. This leads to the followingbenefits:
- Very low dilution with substrate
- Uniformly dispersed hard particles inmetal matrix
- Fine deposit microstructures
- Precise control of build-up height
- Reduced distortion / heat input into base part

Laser Cladded Layers for
Wear or Corrosion Resistance
Laser cladding can be used for weld over-laying of parts with wear or corrosionresistant alloys. For wear resistance, a widevariety of commercially available Nickel,Cobalt and Iron alloy powders can be used. For the highest level of wear protection, mixtures of metal powder with tungsten, chrome or vanadium carbides are utilized.
Process Characteristics
The laser cladded deposit width andheight can be adjusted with the focaloptics, according to the applicationrequirements. The process deposition rategoes up with increasing laser power.
Track Width: 0.5 – 8mm
Single layer Height: 0.1 – 2.5mm
Suitable Materials:Co-, Ni-, Fe-, Al-, Ti- and Cu-alloys,as well as hard material powders(tungsten, chrome or vanadiumcarbides) in metal matrix

Laser Cladding System
Integration
Fraunhofer offers its expertise in lasercladding and process equipment toperform system integration of turn-keycladding systems. We can provide youwith the latest in laser technology for acost-effective solution for coating orrepair of yourcomponents. Systemscan be built with CNC orrobotic handlingsystems, and with CO2or fiber delivered lasers(YAG, diode, fiber ordisk.) With its systemsFraunhofer performs on-site training &support of yourpersonnel, to help youmaster the process.

Cladding Nozzles
Through years of experience inlaser cladding process development,Fraunhofer has developed laser claddingnozzles for a variety of applications.Basic configurations include coaxialpowder feeding (Koax series,) and sideaxis feeding (Cyclone nozzle.) Thenozzles are suitable for CO2, YAG, anddiode wavelengths. Nozzles can becustomized according to the needs ofthe customer.

Koax Series
The Fraunhofer Koax series of nozzlefeeds powder concentric to the laserbeam. This allows for directionindependence of the process. Nozzletips can be configured for precisiondeposition or for high deposition rates.
Cyclone Series
The FraunhoferCyclone nozzle is aside-axis feeddesign. It is suitable
for processes with asingle travel direction. Thenozzle is easy to use andmaintain.
