FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, Today marks the 20th Anniversary of my father’s death. He, like Lee Roy Selmon a few weeks ago, was only 56 when he died. I will be celebra ng the 10:30am Mass today in memory of my earthly father Joseph C. Anastasia. While his passing has le a void, I have been blessed with an abundance of memories and a faith that his prayers are s ll effec ve in my life today. Experiencing the loss of my dad at such a young age has given me a kinship of sorts with those that have also experienced such a loss. The mega-coverage on the Selmon funer-al gave me pause especially landing so close to this anniversary date and I kept thanking God that at least 20 years ago we had a lot of me to say goodbye as my father was very sick towards the end of his life. That was not the case with the family of Lee Roy Selmon and so many others who lose a loved one suddenly. Ironically, it is a true blessing for the one who leaves this world suddenly and without pain even as it is so much harder for those le behind to deal with the cloud of grief. This weekend we celebrate Cateche cal Sunday wherein we will bless those involved with the teaching ministry of catechism and faith forma on to our children. As the school year is now in full swing it is an appropriate me to bless teachers and students alike. As I announced last month, I will be taking the me during the homily to do a teaching on the new Roman Missal. In the gospel this week we hear a passage that elicits a response of “That’s not fair!” Even though the workers who started early are paid exactly what they were promised, it s ll seems unfair that those who did so much less should receive the same. But when we look at this parable through the lens of the First Reading, we see it as a parable of the mysterious ways of God and the mystery of God’s forgiveness. What does it mean to work in the vineyard? It means to follow the law of God, to work with him in the kingdom. Those five o’clock workers are those who hear the call late, but who respond to that call. The wages God gives are his love and forgiveness, which are given not in propor-
on to what we have done, but are given solely from the generosity of God. Peace in Christ, Fr. Tom Anastasia, Pastor
