Four friendsand
the mountainwith a hole in it
Bianca: According to Lara: “Bianca is my best friend. I especially like the fact
she is not bitchy like other girls can be, and she doesn’t care if she gets dirty. She had not been climbing before, yet she still wasn’t scared.”
Lara: According to Gian-Paul: “Lara is totally cool. When she laughs you can’t help but laugh with her. And she was allowed to coil the rope. It is not that easy to do well but at the end her arms were full of neatly coiled
rope.”
A 2-day adventure in
Switzerland, in August 2009
JonasAccording to Bianca: “Jonas is dead good with animals. He knows so
much about them and they all love him. For example, the toad that he found. It sat perfectly still in his hand and was not scared.”
Gian-PaulAccording to Jonas: “With Gian-Paul every day brings another
adventure. He knows the mountains like the back of his hands and is definitely the expert when it comes to climbing, stone skimming and
even doing headstands!”
A new adventure takes our four friends to Switzerland, to the middle of the UNESCO world heritage site of Tectonic Arena Sardona and to the
mysterious “mountain with a hole in it”. The first stage of the adventure is the sport climbing area of Segnesboden bei Flims.
Our waymark!
The sport climbing area is at 2,100 metres above sea level. Sometimes, at the beginning of summer, there is still some snow left here. From
Flims it takes about 3 hours on foot to get to the climbing.
He is the leader and knows which
way to go.
As well as a climbing area, Tectonic Arena Sardona has lots of rare animals and plant species. The oldest reintroduced herd of ibex in
Switzerland lives here for example, as well as lots of moorland creatures.
He will never turn into a prince
– he’s a toad!
Suited to beginners, this sport climbing area is also perfect for children (naturally only when accompanied by adults who are fully versed in climbing). The mountains are also something to behold here, such as
Martinsloch
Not actually as steep as it
looks. Best to practice on level
ground first though.
For climbing courses the equipment is normally provided, also for some guided tours. The rope is the most important piece of equipment. To
guarantee the highest standard of safety, the rope has to be handled correctly and must not for example get twisted or be allowed to run
over sharp edges.
Coiling up the rope is
really hard.
In the distance one can already see the nine peaks of the Tschingelhörner range and the layers of rock that have been pushed
upwards over each other. This overthrust fault, as it is known, is at the centre of the Tectonic Arena Sardona.
The river is great for playing.
Lower Segnesboden is a glacial moraine field. The many little water channels here are in part fed by glacial waters and are constantly changing position. Depending on rainfall, they occasionally become
wider and deeper - as you can see here.
Girls like to ride!
Up here there are more flowers than there in many people’s gardens. Some of these plants have been here since the last ice age!

At the back and to the left in this picture, you can see the “mountain with a hole in it”. The 17m x 19m Martinsloch hole in the Tschingelhorn
Mountain is at an altitude of approximately 2,600 metres. The phenomenon: For about one month of the year, the sun shines through
this hole every morning down the valley towards Elm.
Time and again you are dazzled with amazing views of the centre of this UNESCO-World Heritage Site: The Glarus thrust fault. The horizontal
fault line and the Martinsloch hole are hard to miss.
Made it!
Yes! All four of us really jumped
at the exact same time.
After such an adventurous day,
a little rest is in order: Curled
up in a sleeping bag or fleece
jacket, playing cards until the
light fades.
There is a route that leads to the Martinsloch hole but it can be quite tricky – you have to negotiate a steep slope with lots of boulders and a stone ramp to get there. From a distance, ‘the mountain with a hole in
it’ still looks very mysterious.
The descent is much easier.
According to Jonas: “I always wear my red jacket. I have never felt cold in it. It is made from fleece that is also windproof. There is also a
hood hidden away in the collar in case of emergencies.”

Our favourite things
that we took along
on our adventure:
According to Gian-Paul: “It doesn’t matter if I am climbing, doing the long jump or standing on my head, with this jacket there is always
enough room to move and I am not all sweaty afterwards. It is fully breathable or whatever it’s called. And it’s also windproof.”
KIDS SUPERSONIC
According to Lara: “I am always happy when it rains because my jacket gets a lovely pattern on it. When it gets wet, leaves begin to
grow on the material. They go away again when the jacket dries out. Until it rains again.”
GIRLS MAGIC RAIN
According to Jonas: “With these on, you can stand in water and still won’t get wet feet, unless it comes in from above of course. And even
when we walk for ages my feet never hurt.”
KIDS ALL TERRAIN TEXAPORE
According to Gian-Paul: “My cookie monster jacket is super soft and totally warm. And it fits into my rain jacket as well. They both have a
special zip that means they can be zipped together.”
KIDS KODIAK JACKET
According to Bianca: “The tent is really easy to put up. There is just one pole in the middle. It looks like an Indian tipi and four people can sleep
inside it. It is really cosy.”
