Dollars and Sense

Hello fellow pitchers. I'm writing this as we are having a blast in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We didn't plan our vacation very well as we are here with over 300,000 motorcycles for the Sturgis Rally. All of the motorcyclists have been very nice. Of course, Pep and I are working on recruiting a few of them. Many have

shown interest in our sport.

Coming soon is our State Singles Tournament to be held in Meridian, September 1-2. The Warm-up tournament starts Friday night on August 31; be there by 6 pm to sign up for the Warm-up.

Remember to be able pitch in State Singles, you must have 2 tournaments in and wear a shirt that has (at a minimum) your last name professionally printed on the back. This year our Treasure Valley Club decided to get alcohol permits for Saturday and Sunday. You may bring your beer and drink it only within the gazebo area. Also, don’t forget your lawn chairs and umbrellas for shade. Please bring a dish to share for the Saturday lunch. I hope to see you all in Meridian. Let Brian Poole or me know by Thursday, August 30 if you are coming. Plus, bring $20.00 for the entry fee.

Our membership is down from last year. I don't have the figures with me, but I do know we do not have as many pitchers as we did last year. Everyone, please put on your thinking caps and come up with some suggestions on how we can get new members. We will have a short discussion on this subject at the Annual Meeting.

See you all in Meridian for State Singles Tournament.

Carol Plummer ISHPA Secretary/Treasurer 208-484-4685 [email protected]

Hall of Fame Report

The Hall of Fame presentation this year at the State Singles tournament in Meridian originally included four people on my list to induct. Unfortunately, I was unable to contact the daughter in Caldwell of the deceased individual to get some vital information for the

presentation. Moving forward, we have three people who will be at the State Singles during our potluck/annual meeting. These three have been in our sport for quite some time, and two of the three have made significant contributions to our sport. At this time, I will not reveal the names as I would like to make it a surprise as best I can.

On another note, I have asked our newsletter editor Kay Keskinen to be a part of the Hall of Fame Committee, and she has gladly accepted. I am excited to have her on board as she has helped me out quite a bit with certificates, proof reading, and such in my adventures with the Hall of Fame.

Another item that will surface during the Annual Meeting is that I will make a motion to create a budget for the Hall of Fame. Most of the HOF-related expenses have been coming out of my pocket, and I strongly feel that my efforts should be financially supported by the State Association.

Elections at Annual Meeting

The ISHPA Bylaws list the four officers in our association: President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, and a Secretary/Treasurer. Officers are elected to two-year terms taking office the next January 1st such that in odd-numbered years the First Vice President and Sec/Treas are elected, and in even-numbered years the President and Second Vice President are elected. The Statistician is an appointed position.

Given that 2018 is an even-numbered year, at the Annual Meeting held at the State Singles tournament in Meridian, elections for the offices of President and Second Vice President will be held. Article IV in the Bylaws includes this about running for a position: “Persons interested in running for office are encouraged to announce their candidacy early by submitting their intentions to the Newsletter’s editor.”

So, if you intend to run for the position of President or Second Vice President, please contact me at my e-mail or telephone. Please note I live in the Pacific Time Zone if you call me.

Archived Newsletters

From my perspective, the history of an organization is to be recorded as best as possible. The Four Dead newsletters that report on the actions and activities of its officers, members, and clubs are such a record.

The more recent of our newsletters (2005 – current) have been placed on the

ISHPA web site for anyone to access (read, print, and download), but I knew that there were older issues out there somewhere. With the help of David Spears, a past president of the ISHPA, I was able to find another 37 Four Dead issues, scan them into PDFs, and place them on a web site. I scanned over 400 pages of old newsletters dating back to 1990. Some issues are missing, from my collection as well, so I wonder if some issues were not published. I did read that because of lack of funds, at two times newsletter issues were not published.

I owe a great debt of gratitude to David Spears for the sharing of his personal collection of newsletters. And to go further back in time, Dave managed to find Charlie Ault, a 3-time state champion now living in Seattle; Dave spent his own money to have Charlie’s newsletter binder available to me.

This project is not yet completed, at least until I can be assured that the archives have as many past issues as possible. Later, these issues will be available on the ISHPA web site, but as long as it’s still a work in progress, the newsletters are on my web space here:

http://keskinen.org/fourdead/

If you have any missing past issues that you are willing to share with me so that they can be archived, I would appreciate access to them. Missing issues include some from the years of 1990-1992, 2000, and 2002-2004. Below are three of our old newsletter mastheads:

I encourage you to look at our association’s history through these past issues. Note especially the fantastic newsletters edited by Jim McCue from 1990-1998. After Jim passed away on June 2, 1998, other ISHPA members stepped forward to serve as editor. Others with tenure as editor are the following: Linda VanGorder (1998-2000), Jonell Goss (2001-2003), Jean Tarr (2003-2004), Jerry Smith (2005-2013), and me (2013- ).

Moscow Horseshoes

Sanctioned tournaments are now being held in Moscow at the two courts in East City Park. Regional Director Pep Plummer, accompanied by his wife Carol, the ISHPA secy/treasurer, came to Moscow in June to inspect our courts. Pep examined and measured our courts; he then determined that they met the standards of the NHPA.

Our two local newspapers, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News and the Lewiston Tribune, each promoted our tournament and sent a photographer and sports reporter to cover our June 9th Inaugural Tournament. Pep and Carol made a mini-vacation out of their trip to Moscow, so it was helpful to have their expertise for our first tournament. The heavy downpour of rain all morning kept some pitchers away, but Rathdrum pitcher Laurie Dale seemed to be able to pitch ringers underwater, and she came away as our first tournament’s champion.

After the tournament, both newspapers carried a lengthy story with large photo about horseshoe pitching, the ISHPA, and the results of the tournament. Our second tournament, the Hog Heaven Challenge on July 14, was also publicized in both papers along with a follow-up story and photo with results. Both tournaments had spectators enjoying our sport; we are required to have yellow caution tape enclosing our courts, so that attracted attention.

With only two courts, our tournaments cannot be very large, but we wanted to start hosting tournament, and so we have. We can offer area pitchers opportunities to pitch in sanctioned tournaments along the 378 miles between Coeur d’Alene and Boise. Two new Moscow pitchers have joined the ISHPA this summer, and one pitcher from Colfax, WA will join the WSHPA so that he can pitch in our tournaments.

It should be noted that we currently do not have a horseshoe pitching club in Moscow, but with John Kauffman (our “Pit Boss”), Wayne Petersen, and me, we three work together to handle all the tasks required for hosting tournaments.

“Pep Talk” Corner

Dos and Don’ts

This “Pep Talk” is about my pitching experience at the World Tournament held in Florence, South Carolina this go around. I learned about myself from it, and I thought you might benefit from my insights.

Pitching at World goes for three consecutive days in each division class. It all started out okay on my first day, but somewhere something went south and I ended up with three wins and two losses (3-2) that initial day. In my down time I couldn't squeeze in some practice due to my scheduled duties working with shoe check in's and judging. at World; Carol and I were volunteering usually from start to finish each day.

On my second day of pitching, I lost all five games, so now I am at 3-7 out of 10 games. What a miserable showing. Cause and effect. Let me explain. I had made two decisions prior to the World Tournament. First, a change in MECHANICS, I began to use a "starter step" ahead of my actual delivery step. I had used it at the Hailey tournament, and it worked pretty well. But now, for some reason, my shoes (Bandits) bounced off the stake. I was pleased with the physical change, but disappointed with the ringer results. And I lost one game by 1 point. Then I won next two games, but lost another by one point. I couldn't figure out why my shoes wouldn't stay on the stake! I went through a period of FRUSTRATION and DISGUST! Yep, got up tight, got into the make SURE mentality, and that's a bad place to be. You lose FOCUS and CONCENTRATION. My feel for the shoe went out the window. My focus and concentration went to GUIDING MY MECHANICS through mental effort instead of just "LET IT HAPPEN."

So, what about the DOS and DON'TS? DO what your body is capable of doing naturally, without forcing it to do what’s not Natural. DON'T try to fix what’s not broken. When you know when your MECHANICS are haywire and you begin to FOCUS on that aspect of your game, you automatically go into your self-teaching MODE and lose the TRUE FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION ASPECTS OF YOUR GAME. You no longer LET IT HAPPEN, you’re trying to MAKE IT HAPPEN and that makes you perform tight and restricted. It's like driving with your foot on the brake, you'll eventually get there but you won't like the results. That's what went down the first two rounds, and I ended up with 3 wins, 7 losses. UGH!!!

Now the next 5 games. First game, I lose miserably. While waiting for my next court to open up, I practiced a little on my present court. Isn’t it FUNNY how well you do when there’s no pressure of a contest involved? I discovered two FLAWS. One had led to the other! I had unconsciously gone back to my old MECHANICS of one step delivery, which changed my shoe presentation; I got out of rhythm due to my being out of BALANCE.

Let me back up a little bit here and mention my second decision of change. Due to my Bandits bouncing off the stake, I decided to use a different brand of shoes at the World. I went to my Ted Allens, 2.99# weight vs the 2.45# weight of the Bandits. Cause and effect. The heavier shoe required a longer step to keep the shoe from being short at the stake but still open. Inadvertently, that changed my shoe presentation from out and down to UP and down, which changed my balance, and therefore a loss of rhythm.

Old habits never go away, they’re replaced by new ones. Making sure I took a longer step, I unintentionally omitted my starter step which changed my shoe presentation. Just having that little bit of practice while waiting between games, I FELT what was happening, where, and why!

Good news! I won my last 4 games and ended up 7 - 8 overall. IF I hadn't gotten up tight, frustrated, and disgusted, I'm sure I would have discovered it sooner rather than later when too little was too late.

Hey, "YOU ALL" practice real good now, ya hear? We'll see you all over yonder at the State Singles in Meridian, or is that DOWN UNDER in Meridian?

Pep Plummer, Regional Director 208-949-8098 [email protected]

NOTE: Heads up--there will be a shoe and membership card check in prior to tournament play at State Singles. Bring some money since we will have some items up for a drawing and a 50/50. Bring a dish for our potluck lunch at our Annual Meeting. Good luck and good pitching to everyone.
