Praying those familiar words served as the transition between the music and lesson time. Our worship leader (my grandmother!) would lead us in the prayer before heading off to our various classrooms. My biggest fear then was forgetting the words, so I had images in my mind that I associated with each section. When we prayed “give us our daily bread,” in my mind a big ol’ loaf of bread popped up. These little reminders ensured I said all the right words. They also prevented me from actually focusing on what I was saying and meaning it with my whole heart. It was not a question of belief. I was too distracted by what wasn’t important (looking good in front of my fellow Sunday school members) to attend to what truly mattered (the convictions and confessions of my petition to God). Preparing and preaching this sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer has brought a surprising amount of joy into my life. I will confess that when I first had the idea of doing the series it seemed a little cheesy to me. A sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer? How much more conventional as a pastor could I be? But I am realizing that often what we think is most familiar and comfortable is actually far more foreign and unknown to us than we realize. This series has allowed me to hear the words Jesus taught us afresh and to cherish them in new ways. I will also confess that this series brings with it a sense of inadequacy and insecurity. Pastors aren’t supposed to admit such feelings but everyone has them, so the acknowledgment is just my being honest. Praying for God’s Kingdom to come when we struggle to move beyond our own political tribes? Trusting that God will sustain us through this day when the entire future seems uncertain? Forgiving those who have wronged us and believing God has truly forgiven us our wrongs? We pray to God for all of these things. If we have the audacity to pray for them then we should have the courage to live them. And yet, I struggle as much as the next person with every single one of them. So please, don’t hear my reflections on this prayer as any thing other than a fellow Christian trying to impress these words of Jesus on my own heart and hoping that my “doing theology in public” might speak to your heart as well. I do know that prayer matters. I do believe prayer changes things, in this world and within us. I do understand that the Lord’s Prayer can help us grow as disciples of Christ. I do confess that God deserves the glory forever and ever. So even as we wrestle with making the words Jesus taught his followers our own, we can say “Amen!” together. Steadfast in hope, Rev. PASTORAL PONDERINGS

Brothers and Sisters,

My earliest memories of the Lord’s Prayer come from Sunday School growing up. Farewell and Commissioning Service for Rev. Dr. Larry and Debbie Colvin

Community Christian Church invites FCC to join them Saturday, June 30, at 3:30PM for Rev. Dr. Larry Colvin’s retirement celebration from Regional Ministry in addition to commissioning Larry, and his wife, Debbie, to serve as missionaries in Ghana. A dinner will follow at 5:00PM. (Please RSVP to East Office at (314) 918-2515 or [email protected].) Books and Diaper Shower

planned for Baby Underwood

At our next 5th Sunday breakfast, on July 29th, we will be sharing the joy of the upcoming birth of Baby Boy Underwood. This is a special baby, not only for Rev. Beau and Casey, but for all of us at First Christian Church. Baby Underwood will be the first boy born to a current senior minister in modern history! Those wishing to honor our PK (preacher's kid) are asked to bring one of the following essential items:

Books (Possibly, your favorite children’s book? As there could be many who love the same book, it may be helpful to include a gift receipt. FYI - Good Night Moon is already in their library!)

Diapers (Pampers preferred, any size)

Baby wipes

If you would like to participate, please leave gifts (unwrapped) at the church office, or bring them to the breakfast, and we will present them to Rev. Beau and Casey that morning. (No names on books, diapers or wipes means the Underwood’s can do a blanket "thank you" in the Bell!)

PLEASE JOIN US FOR AN OPEN HOUSE Celebrating Pam Hart, Sheilah Lister and

Lori Acock

Sunday, June 24, 2018 2:00PM—4:00PM in the Activities Room

RSVP to Julie Kuhlmann at [email protected]

SAVE THE DATE! 2018 Family Retreat VBS Saturday, July 21

Drawing from the wonderful book Faithful Families by Traci Smith, this year’s VBS will be fun for the whole family! Families will explore faith through creative prayer practices and time together. Please plan to attend as a family—children and parents, guardians, grandparents, are all invited to experience this time with one another and embrace the wonder of it all. More details to come.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL

Last year the kids at FCC had a blast with our Building Faith Brick by Brick curriculum, so we are bringing it back this summer! Starting June 3, we paused our Dig In! to the Life of Jesus curriculum in order to explore some important stories in the Old Testament using our Lego building skills. All ages Summer Sunday School will run through Sunday, August 26. Please plan to bring your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends to Sunday School this summer! If you are interested in teaching or assisting with a couple of weeks of our summer curriculum, please contact Michelle Sheppard or Rev. Sarah. The kids are tons of fun to teach!
