Dear Brothers,

As we approach October it is a good time to think of giving to help those in need. We are not too young or too old to give our God given gifts to the needy. All the good works we perform follow our four core principles Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

PGK Brian Magrane did a wonderful job setting up the dates and coordinating the service at My Brother’s Table. It shows what we are all about Charity. We were together as brothers giving our time. Fraternity is strong with our council it shows at every event, and it will continue as it has for 125 years!

Unitywas also present at the installation of officers, whichwas a great event. Patriotismshined as PGK David Solimine served on the committee that put together the veterans parade. Giving his time on such a great event thank you.

The Tootsie roll drive starts on Thursday October 4th. Please contact me to get your bucket and vest. An hour of time from at least half of us would really be a success.

Thank you everyone for all you do at bingo. It is always the largest way we fundraise to help out the charities we give to.

I would like to thank you all for voting me as a second year term. I am truly blessed to be in this most important role as the Grand Knight. I will work harder than last year to demonstrate how humbled I am that you have chosen me. I only ask that you take a form for membership and ask at your parish to join the Knights of Columbus. There will be more recruitment drives coming up, please ask for times and at which parish locations we will be recruing.

Fraternally yours Tito Cabrera Dear Brothers,

Spring has certainly taken its time getting here this year with bouts of winter weather continuing into April. But signs of spring are abound with the Red Sox off to a record start and the Celtics and Bruins both in the playoffs. Also the Boston Mara-thon has happened as well. Congrats to Irish Couple of the Year Hugh and Sheila Nestor, and to PGK Charlie Rowe for a great night as always. Congrats to bartender Andrew Richard on his recent wedding to Ashley Donovan, wishing all the best to the Richard’s in their married life together. The council was saddened recently with the passing of John Garbarino Jr. John was a quiet man but very friendly, every Friday for years he would take The RIDE from Malden to the council often with goodies like chips and cheese and crackers to share with his brother knights. He will be missed. Another Friday night staple at the council Bibby Scarlata is currently in rehab in Peabody but is on the road to recovery, and hopefully with our prayers he can be back at Valladolid with us all. It was nice to see the re-turn back at the council recently of Bob Walsh, Ray Grenier, Les Goodwin, Nick Meninno, Fred Doucette, Fran Burke, and PGK Ed Joly. Congrats to newly ordained Deacon Corey Rouse who was ordained by Cardinal Sean O’Malley now serves with our former Chaplain Fr Gregory at Immaculate Con-ception in Marlboro. Recently our rental agent Patrice Darcy Machado had a milestone bir thday and bash at the hall, it was quite the evening had by all, Patrice is the daughter of for-mer VBA President Neil Darcy. On Saturday April 21st we held our annual Luau dance function which was a wonderful night of great chinese food, great music and entertainment by DJ Alan Labella. Also thanks to John Sumares for chair ing the event and all the work done by PGK Sal Tavernese, and PGK Bill/Kathy Magerian. On Patr iots Day members of the council

went down to My Brothers Table in Lynn for a night of service. One of the values of our order is to serve the community and there are few better ways to help than coming down to the table. Thanks to PGK Brian Magrane and Andrew Richard for their work in organizing these important events. On the last Sunday in April the council did a Membership Drive at St Pius and Holy Family to recruit new members to the order. The interest was strong and hopefully will add to our ranks soon. A First and Sec-ond Degree is planned at Valladolid on Fr iday May 11th at 7pm, candidates should arrive at 630. Will keep you posted on upcoming degree ceremonies. Congrats to PGK David Solimine Sr., who is being honored by the Boston Nor th Cancer Asso-ciation at their upcoming gala with the 2018 Hope Begins Here Award. The month of May also brings the annual Bingo Ban-quet which is an oppor tunity to thank all the loyal and dedi-cated bingo workers many of which come every week. But we can always need more help so if you have an hour or 2 on a Thursday come on down. Another year of the 300 club is about to close this month but not before the annual banquet where plenty of members walk away with some money. Thanks to PGK Mike Phelps for all his work on this popular program. Chatterbox wants to thank brother Tom Donato for an exclusive tour of the brand new fieldhouse at St John’s Prep. The new facility is amazing with state of the art pool, gym, track and workout facilities. Well that is all the news for this month, but one more thing I want to wish any mothers who read this a Hap-py Mother’s Day. But this might be my last repor t in this space, hopefully another voice will take over this column, but it has been a pleasure to share the happenings of the council here every month.

Chatterbox May 2018

D ear Brothers and

Friends, Each year about twenty members of our council are taken by death from our number. It is a long-established tradition of Valladolid Council that we acknowledge these deceased members with a wake ser-vice composed of prayer for the re-pose of the member’s soul, and con-dolences to the grieving family. This service is not just for those members we knew and cherished as close friends and active members, but also to pray for those members we may not have personally known.

We do so to acknowledge his mem-bership among other brother knights who now gather to bid him farewell. Irrespective of the closeness, or fondness, or popularity of these de-ceased members, we arrange to meet at the funeral home (with the permis-sion of the deceased member’s fami-ly), and together we offer a few prayers of committal, most frequent-ly led by one of our devoted brother priests or deacon chaplains. We en-courage all those gathered in attend-ance to join us in these prayers, and then our grand knight presents a bi-ble to the family as we individually introduce ourselves and offer our condolences for their loss. It is our belief as Catholics and Knights of Columbus that this mod-est but genuine manifestation of love and compassion for one another is

what we are called upon to do so as to commemorate those works of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His acts of kindness and love during His earthly presence. It is our belief as knights that a kind action - even from strangers - is wel-come and helpful to those who are suffering such a great loss. As well, we believe that a kind word about a woman’s son or husband from a brother knight expands the comfort the grieving person needs to cope with such a profound loss. And this gathering and prayer service conveys a reflection of esteem in which the member was held by a group of his fellow knights. We firmly and truly believe all of this helps our departed brother’s family as they deal with their loss.

300 Club Final Drawing &

Banquet

It’s hard to believe another year has gone by. Preparations are under way for our final drawing of this season. As a show of appreciation for making this year a great success Grand Knight Tito Cabrera would like to invite you to attend the evening of Monday May 7, 2018 at 6:00 PM, for dinner at the council home, 177 Lynnfield St. with the drawing to follow immediately after. Fraternally, PGK Mike Phelps 300 Club Chairman

Continued from page 2 . Why is this ritual we are called upon to perform so important? First and foremost, it is an act of reverence and respect for a creature of God, for it is He who made us all. It is a fulfillment for us, the deceased member’s broth-er knights, of our commitment to our religious dictum to Love one another as He has loved us. This is so because each and every one of us are made in the image and likeness of the Lord. And through His teachings, His Son, Jesus instructed us to remember that He loves every one of us equally and without exception, and we are similarly instructed to do so. Is this a difficult concept for all of us to get our heads around? Maybe. It certainly is easy to understand the words and instructions of love that Christ has given us, but there also is no doubt that sometimes it is hard for we so -imperfect individuals to complete in action. But we must try, for we are instructed by Him to do so. As such, each of us deserves to be sent onward, we trust, to the next life with the Lord with dignity, recognition, respect and affection. We trust it helps the departed brother. We trust it helps heal the family’s loss. We hope it helps us – and builds us, too. Respectfully, PGK Brian P. Magrane

Members Wake Service Volunteeers Needed One of the important apostolates of our Knights of Columbus Council No. 70 isourMembersWakeServiceGroup.Here’showitworks. When we learn of the passing of one of our brother knights, our grand knight contacts the funeral home to arrange a date and time for us to perform our brief wake service during regular scheduled calling hours. A few brother knights then call a list of the volunteers to advise them of our brother’s passing and ask them to join us at the funeral home at the date and time indicated. We gather about 5 to 10 minutes before the appointed time, then we proceed to the casket or urn. Generally, we are led by one of our deacons and our grand knight. We perform a short prayer service commending the deceased to his Creator, and we offer our personal condolences to the bereaved family. In most cases these servicesoccuratabout6:00pmandwearefinishedandonourwaywithin20minutes. These wake services occur about 15 to 20 times a year. I imagine there are a number of you reading this article who keep yourK of C membership active but rarely come to the council hall for activities, but you always hoped for a more faith-based way to participate in our council’s good works. Actually there are a lot of ways to do so, and here is just one example. And it so happens that right now we need your help. We ask that you consider joining us in this Corporal Work of Mercy of Burying the Dead. Importantly, our active members in this group will tell you how much this expression of direct and personal sympathy means to the family we are there to console. To restate, right now we need more help in this work of mercy. I ask you to contact the grand knight Fausto Cabrera (781-248-1286), or me Brian Magrane (781-864-8924) to get more information, and hopefully to have us add you to our call and visitation list. Call one of us, or send a text, or leave a message. We’ll get back to you. Please believe us when we say we know how busy you all are. And as such, if you do join our group, we know there are times when you will not be able to join us. But we also know that when you are able to attend, you will feel and experience the gratitude of our deceased brother’s family for having been there to say a prayer of committal for him. And you too will feel good for having done so. We try to have at least a dozen members at these services. That can only happen if you make a phone call to one of us today and say yes, you’ll be happy to join the council’s Wake Service Group. Respectfully, PGK Brian P. Magrane

ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED

VALLADOLID COUNCIL SERVES AT MY BROTHERS TABLE Once again, members of Valladolid Council No. 70, Knights of Columbus had the privilege to continue our commitment of help-ing those of our brethren who are in daily need of assistance in so many different ways. On Monday, April 16, led by Grand Knight Tito Cabrera, our council invested itself in an evening of service at my Brothers Table in downtown Lynn. So, while so many people give lip service only to helping the least of our Lord’s children, members of the Valladolid family and their friends stepped forward to serve a hot meal to some of the city’s most needy citizens. These good people were there to offer a word of comfort and friendship, to clean the tables and wash the dishes and pass out smiles by the dozens. And, importantly, each month our council makes a modest monthly donation to help support the Table’s continuing efforts in that regard. Charity, it is often said, begins at home. And it also is often said that we knights know a thing or two about charity: we know it starts with our Valladolid members and families and friends, some of whom are noted below. Those who came to serve at My Brothers Table on April 16:

Tuesday, May 22 will be our next evening of service at My Brothers Table. Contact Brian Magrane for more info and how to sign up to help. He can be reached at: [email protected] or by call or text at 781-864-8924. Please Remember: My Brothers Table receives no financial assistance from any city, state or federal source. They are entirely dependent on generous contributions from friends and supporters like the Knights of Columbus. And in addition to the six times a year that your council organizes people-power to serve at The Table, we also donate over a thousand dollars each year to support their efforts. That’s what our Grand Knight Tito calls “Good Work doing Good Works”, brother knights! Respectfully, PGK Brian Magrane

Valladolid Dishes it Out at My Brothers Table! Pretty much every time our council serves dinner at My Brothers Table, as we did on September 11, 2018, I try to write a short, 250-word article about the event (and believe me, I have a hard time saying Hello in 250 words!). So, instead of my usual headline, I thought I’d try to make it more interesting for you to read by utilizing a “clever” headline to attract attention. We’ll see if it works, since last month I sent out an appeal which fell short, except for one brother who called to volunteer. Well, at any rate we had a very successful outing to My Brothers Table, led by Grand Knight Fausto Cabrera, and accompanied by 14 other knights and their spouses. Let me tell you who they are:

Brother Frank Burke Brother Ralph Simard PGK Donald CollinsPGK Frank Carrabba PGK Salvatore Tavernese PGK Chris KennedyPGK Charlie Rowe Brother Peter MacIsaac Betty MacIsaac, his wifeBrother Bob Hartshorn Donna Hartshorn, his wife Brother Mike GaynorBrother Bill Pryor PGK Brian Magrane

Eachoftheseterrificpeoplegaveuptheirnight, cameouttoserveaheartydinner, smiledandgreetedalloftheMBT guests as they came through the line. And as they left, a few of us who manned the dish washing room, got “thank you” after “thank you”, as I’m sure all the people in the serving line received too. For me, and I’ll bet for everyone else from the Knights, that was enough! First off, that message above is exactly 250 words! Second, call me at 781-864-8924 to say you will join us the next time we serve on Tuesday, October 23. Help give some of the “regulars” a rest.

Fraternally, PGK Brian Magrane
