As most of us knowthere’s a lot of dysfunc-tion and discord in theblack community. Yetwhen people comeforth to open dialogueabout it they’re ridiculedand talked about in anegative way by theirown family and/orfriends.

Talking about hard core real is-sues within the black community islike pulling teeth from a lion’smouth.

We want to turn a blind eye tothe issues being discussed be-cause we are not willing to hearthe truth about how our family andcommunity is dysfunctional.

We’re excusing abuse (all levelsfrom sexual to financial) by trump-ing up how the abuser(s) is a goodperson/people thus failing to callthat individual(s) out on their BS.You have family members who actlike hoodrats, thugs, and bumsdoing stuff that’s not right such ashaving a boatload of kids with mul-tiple mothers/fathers and not tak-ing care of them.

Other issues that arise is thefact that there’s a lot of financialBlackCommunity-2016discordwithin the black community as wellwith

so many living above means(mainly black women) and doingthings like co-signing for cars, credit cards, and loan applicationsfor a man they’re not married toand wind up being the one who’shaving to pay the bill.

It’s stuff like that which ad-dresses the nonsense within thecommunity with black women tak-ing care of a man they’re not mar-ried to.

Chronic incarcerations amongblack men is contributing to the

dysfunction and discord becausethey can’t do anything for theirchildren, wives, and significantothers.

What can a man who is lockedup do aside from writing letters, calling home, and getting periodi-cal visits?

Nothing and is likely to return toprison on a parole violation and/oron a new case. We as a people re-fuse to address some issueswithin the community because itseems as if it’s a badge of shameto call out individual(s) on their BSnonsense.

Yet you’ll see someone’s mamaor grandmother acting a fool incourt when the sentence ishanded down crying about howtheir baby is ‘innocent’. Nobodywants to speak up and keep it realabout the dysfunctional mess thathas the black community practi-cally destroyed.

It’s enough to say that we areOK and accepting of BS, abuse, mistreatment and disrespect. What is also noticeable is howpeople are often ostracized if theyare speaking out about how theblack community covers up forthose doing wrong.

We don’t hold anyone account-able and when you do it’s alwaysviewed as you’re the troublemakerand the one causing drama. Howis holding someone or somebodyaccountable for BS, abuse, mis-treatment, and disrespect causing“drama”?

That also follows the path manyblacks take when they don’t wantto own up to what they or othershave created.

Until we as a race decide to stopmaking excuses and covering upfor others when they are doingwrong and calling them out on itthe black community will neverheal and move forward to cultivatethe next generation to build theircommunities instead of tearingthem down.—Staff Writer; Nafeesah Ab-

dullah

When it comes tofinancial stability, black Americans areoften in much moreprecarious financialsituations than whiteAmericans.

Their unemployment rate ishigher, and so is the level ofpoverty within the black commu-nity.

In 2013, the poverty rate amongwhite Americans was 9.6 percent, among black Americans it was27.2 percent.

And the gap between the wealthof white families and black familieshas widened to its highest levelssince 1989, according to a 2014study by Pew Research Center.

The facts of this rift aren’t new,or all that surprising. But perhapswhat’s most unsettling about thecurrent economic climate in blackAmerica is that when black fami-lies attain middle-class status, thelikelihood that their children will re-main there, or do better, isn’t high.

“Even black Americans whomake it to the middle class arelikely to see their kids fall down theladder,” writes Richard Reeves, asenior fellow at the Brookings In-stitution.

In a recent blog post Reevessays that seven out of 10 blackchildren who are born to familieswith income that falls in the middlequintile of the income spectrumwill find themselves with incomethat's one to two quintiles belowtheir parents' during their ownadulthood.

A 2014 study from the FederalReserve Bank of Chicago, whichlooked at factors like parental in-come, education, and family struc-ture, shows a similar pattern:Many black Americans not only failto move up, but show an in-creased likelihood of backsliding.

According to the study, “In re-cent decades, blacks have expe-rienced substantially less upward

intergenerational mobility and sub-stantially more downward inter-generational mobility than whites.”

The greater probability of slip-ping back applies to blacks acrossincome groups. According to theFed study, about 60 percent ofblack children whose parents hadincome that fell into the top 50 per-cent of the distribution saw theirown income fall into the bottomhalf during adulthood.

This type of downward slide wascommon for only 36 percent ofwhite children.

But the gap in mobility was alsosignificant for lower-class familiesas well.

“For most of the bottom half ofthe income distribution, the racialdifferences in upward mobility areconsistently between 20 and 30percent," writes senior economistBhashkar Mazumder, the study’sauthor.

“If future generations of whiteand black Americans experiencethe same rates of intergenera-

tional mobility as these cohorts,we should expect to see thatblacks on average would notmake any relative progress.”

The explanations for this phe-nomenon are varied, but largelyhinge on many of the criticismsthat already exist in regard to so-cioeconomics and race in the U.S.Economists cite lower educational

attainment, higher rates of single-parent households, and geo-graphic segregation as potentialexplanations for these trends.

The latter determines not onlywhat neighborhoods people livein, but often what types of schoolschildren attend, which could playa role in hindering their educa-tional and professional attainment

later on. According to Reeves, "In terms

of opportunity, there are still twoAmericas, divided by race."

Still, most economists lack aclear, definitive explanation forwhy, after reaching the middleclass, many black American fami-lies quickly lose that status as theirchildren fall behind.

The Weekend Edition•FamilyTime•March 2, 2018 Page 4I Was Never A FatherlessChildBy Quincy LeNearGossfield, courtesy of huffingtonpost.comThe singular

story of the SingleBlack Mother isrepeated so oftenand has becomesuch a zeitgeist ofthe African Ameri-can experiencethat this belief hasbecome a gospeltruth that presentsitself as an inher-ent and immutablestate and condi-tion of Blackness.

Even I have drank the Kool-Aid. I never even stopped toquestion or challenge the no-tion when it is spoken becauselike dance, basketball, fried

chicken, and grape soda - weare all the same right?

Well I am tired of accepting it.Single mom is not a catch allphrase for the whole of theBlack community. I was notborn to a single mom. I was notraised a child without a father.

In spite of the changing mar-ital status of my motherthroughout my life; from mar-ried to divorced, from singleand dating to married again, from widowed and back to sin-gle. Despite my mother and thewomen in my family havingbeen highly capable of holdingdown their households, I havealways had a father present inmy life.

He may not have alwaysbeen in my household in flipflops, in a lazy chair, smoking acigar while reading the WallStreet Journal after his longday at the office, but he wasthere as a dad on the week-ends, as a step-dad, as agranddad, as an uncle, as anolder cousin, as a close neigh-bor, or as a family friend.

He was barbecuing in a tinbarrel in the backyard on the4th of July. He was makingsure I respected my motherand women. He was teachingme how to play the dozens.

He was showing me how totie my tie and fix my collar. Hewas giving me an couple of dol-lars to spend for myself formaking a run to the store. Hetaught me how to drive in a

parking lot. He taught me how to throw

and take a punch. He taughtme that, “An empty wagonmakes a lot of noise.” Hetaught me how to flirt andcharm.

He taught me how to bait ahook. He taught me how to guta fish.

He took me on road trips tosee America. He taught mehow to clean up and lather inOld Spice. He taught me aboutClassical music.

He took me on field trips tothe Art Museum. He introducedme to fine literature. He taughtme when it was OK to cry andwhen it was not.

He taught me how to besomeone to everyone and tonavigate the world no matterwhere I am or who I am with.

He may not have been thesame man for every occasionbut he was there.

I’ve never lacked fathers orfather figures, ever. I think it’stime I recognize that and give

respect and thanks where re-spect and thanks are due.

The physical presence of abiological father means nothingif the quality of that presence ispoor.

What matters are those greatfather figures who loved us,taught us, cared for us, pro-tected us, and helped shape usinto the men and women webecome.

I was never a fatherlesschild.

OPEN LETTER TO OUR READERS Milwaukee Community Journal is an actual brick and mortar building, not just an online entity. I was downstairs re-viewing our equipment in the storage office and it's like visiting a museum. Old relics, equipment, computers, softwareand past editions illuminate 41 years journaling the history of change. Since our origin in 76, we've moved with ouraudience. Today our readers are predominantly millennials, 18-40 years of age, shakers and movers, the buyers! Theyare buying homes, cars, raising families. They are eating “fresh”, active in politics, exercising and partying. Ourreaders find us in print, with our twice-weekly editions in tenured retail outlets, churches and selective distributionspots. But they also read us online at milwaukeecommunityjournal.com We,re in this to win this! We'redynamic....crisp clear....interactive...and to be honest - exploding with information that you want to read! We're perfect for new and established advertisers! We want more local interaction and community written articles. Wewant to offer more millennial access to a proven community source. This is who we are, but one thing is still deep onour hearts, and that is you’ve got to join our team. You're the community part of the Milwaukee community journal.Let's build together!-- Speech Thomas, The Milwaukee Community Journal, Wisconsin’s Largest African-American Newspaper
