ADVENT EMBER DAYS THIS WEEK

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday after Gaudete Sun-day (3rd Sunday of Advent) are known as “Advent Embertide,” and they come near the beginning of the Season of Winter (December, January, Febru-ary). Liturgically, the readings for the days’ Masses follow along with the general themes of Advent, opening with Wednesday’s Introit of Isaias 45:8 and Psalm 18:2:

Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened and bud forth a Savior. The heavens show forth the glory of God: and the firmament declareth the work of His hands.

Wednesday’s and Saturday’s Masses will include one and four lessons, respectively, with all of them con-cerning the words of the Prophet Isaias except for the last lesson on Saturday, which comes from Dan-iel and recounts how Sidrach, Misach and Abdenago are saved from King Nabuchodonosor’s fiery furnace by an angel. This account, which is followed by a glorious hymn, is common to all Embertide Satur-days but for Whit Embertide.

The Gospel readings for the three days concern, re-spectively, the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-28), Visita-tion (Luke 1:37-47), and St. John the Baptist’s ex-horting us to “prepare the way of the Lord and make straight His paths” (Luke 3:1-6). PLEASE NOTE WELL: The FAST and ABSTINENCE for the Vigil of Christmas (Dec. 24) may instead be ob-served on Dec. 23.

HOLY INNOCENTS BOOKSHELF

The Embrace of God’s Mercy by Mother Elvira, Michele Casella

On July 16, 1983, in an abandoned house on an Italian hillside, Sister Rita Petrozzi, known today as Mother Elv-ira, opened Comunità Cenacolo. That dilapidated building quickly became God’s hope-filled answer to the des-perate cries of the many lost, lonely, drug-addicted young people who soon began knocking on its door, seeking to be reborn. A potent apostolate was born.

Today – barely thirty-six years later – Comunità Cenacolo consists of seventy houses stretched across the globe that welcome thousands of young people struggling with drug or alcohol addictions as they search for meaning in life. Mission houses in Africa, Central America, and South America shelter aban-doned and orphaned street children, inviting them, too, on a journey of rebirth in love. Each house is imbued with God’s mercy and forgiveness. There young people live in a simple Christian family envi-ronment, transformed by the healing powers of prayer, work, friendship, sacrifice, and love.

For decades now and on a daily basis, Mother Elv-ira’s humble spirituality has awakened hope and joy in the souls of the troubled and the lost, giving each of them new life. Open the pages of this wise, up-lifting book. That same hope and joy can be yours.

VENERABLE FATHER ALFRED PAMPALON, C.SS.R.

Alfred Pampalon was born on No-vember 24, 1867, in Lévis (Quebec), the ninth of twelve children. His father was a builder and contractor, who worked building churches. Af-ter attending primary school for two years, Alfred entered the Collège de Lévis, in 1876, where he took cours-es in business. Five years later, af-

ter an illness, he began classical studies in order to become a priest. Shortly before his sixth year, in 1885, he contracted pneumonia. They thought he was going to die.

Following his recovery, that was attributed to the intercession of Saint Anne, Alfred set out on a pil-grimage, by foot, to the shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré to give thanks for his healing. There he asked to enter the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer of which his brother was already a mem-ber. He was accepted and in July 1886 he sailed off for the Redemptorist novitiate in Saint-Trond, Bel-gium. On September 8, 1887, he made his perpetual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Given the precarious state of his health, the superiors had been reluctant to receive him into the community, but his exemplary piety outweighed all objection. After completing his studies in Philosophy and The-ology, he was ordained priest on October 4, 1892. The following year, on August 31, he was appointed to the monastery in Mons, where he carried out var-ious duties, replacing absent priests or on occasion accompanying those who went to preach in neigh-boring parishes.

From April to September 1894 he undertook a sec-ond novitiate at Beau Plateau, which among the Re-demptorists served as a preparation for conducting missions and parish retreats. Meanwhile Pampalon’s health continued to deteriorate and the Belgian cli-mate did not help. His superiors therefore decided to send him back to Canada, hoping that in his na-tive climate he would recover. He returned in Sep-tember 1895 and was assigned to the monastery at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, where he carried out sim-ple duties, preaching in the basilica and hearing confessions. In February 1896, he entered the infir-mary for the last time. He died on September 30, 1896. He was declared venerable by Pope John Paul II on May 14, 1991 and is the Patron of Alcoholics and Drug Addicts. His tomb is located in the Im-maculate Conception Chapel of the Lower Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre north of Quebec City in Canada.

Copies of a biography, Novena, and Prayer to ob-tain graces through the intercession of Venerable Father Alfred Pampalon are located in the rear

of the church near the bulletins

PRAYER TO VENERABLE

FATHER ALFRED PAMPALON

Dear Father Alfred, here is my prayer to you, listen to my cry, come to my help, obtain for me the favors I desire. You are well known as the protector of peo-ple who are suffering in body, mind and spirit.

You show special compassion for alcohol and drug addicts. You have freed so many people from their dependencies. Free me also, I beg you, dear Father Alfred, and free those people I recommend to you, especially members of my family.

I come to you with confidence. I pray for myself and for all those who are dear to me. Come also to the assistance of the Church and of the whole world. Amen

2019 CHRISTMAS COLLECTION

The 2019 Christmas Collection will be taken up on Christmas Day, December 24/25. Envelopes for this year’s Christmas Collection are located throughout the church. Holy Innocents relies very much on this annual collection to help us meet our many expenses and to continue to provide for our parishioners, work-ers and visitors 5 daily Masses, 3 hours of confession per day, 7 hours of daily exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and many novenas and devotions. In thanksgiving for what is offered here, consider making a sacrificial gift to the “Little Catholic Church Around the Corner.” If you will not be with us on Christmas, you may leave your Christmas gift in any of the boxes in the church, return it to the Rectory Of-fice, or put it in any of the collections. May the Infant Jesus reward your generosity to YOUR parish!

SECOND COLLECTION

Support aging religious. Our second collection is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Many senior Catholic sis-ters, brothers, and religious order priests served for lit-tle or no pay. Today, religious communities often do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs. Your gift helps provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. It also helps en-sure younger members can continue the good works of their elders. Please be generous.

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall follow-ing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more information on joining this ministry as an active or auxiliary member please contact James Hackett at: [email protected].

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
