FROM THE DIARY OF ST. FAUSTINA

“Once when I went outside the convent to go to con-fession [St. Michael‟s Church], I chanced upon my con-fessor [Father Sopocko] saying Mass just then. After a while, I saw the Child Jesus on the altar, joyfully and playfully holding out His hands to him. But a moment later the priest took the beautiful Child into his hands, broke Him up and ate Him alive. At the first instant I felt a dislike for the priest for having done this to Jesus, but I was immediately enlightened in the matter and understood that this priest was very pleasing to God. AUGUST 26th - Feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa

While the original Miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the Black Madonna, is located in a chapel at the Pauline Monastery on Jasna Gora in Poland, there are many such copies throughout the world. The following tells of a miraculous event associated with one of these copies of the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa:

The Weeping Virgin

On Sunday, July 3, 1949, the Polish Diocese of Lu-blin was taken over by the new Bishop Peter Kla-wa. Around 4:00 p.m. on that day, people were praying in front of the painting of Our Lady of Czestochowa at one of the side altars of the Cathe-dral. Sister Barbara Sadowska noticed changes on the face of Our Lady. A tear was visible under Mary's right eye. The nun informed Joseph Wojtowicz about it. Other people in the cathedral also noticed the phenomenon and the news spread so that by the evening the church could not be closed due to the constant crowd coming in. The church authorities assumed it was moisture which settled in that very place. The cathedral was badly damaged during the war and was undergoing reno-vations, so humidity seemed to be the natural ex-planation. However when the painting was re-moved from the wall, it turned out that the under-side was dry and that there was no question of moisture. A special commission was established to examine the liquid. However, the research meth-ods at the time did not allow to clearly define what the substance was because it did not react with any of the chemicals used. It was only stated with cer-tainty that it was not blood or tears but some type of substance from a living organism. But the faith-ful did not need research. They saw the phenome-non with their own eyes. The communist authori-ties at the time accused the church of a hoax, and the press wrote of the backwardness of people who believed in such miracles. But this did not deter people from all over Poland to go on pilgrimage there. As a result of this, tickets to Lublin were not sold, trains were stopped, and guards were set up on the outskirts of the city. When that didn't help, the arrests began. Those arrested were transported to various police stations and kept in small, dark, and humid cells until they were trans-ported to the prison in the Lublin Castle. The trial of the prisoners began on August 20, 1949 and was

Our RCIA Classes Begin Soon!

unfair as none of them were allowed to have a law-yer. For a sentence many received from 10 months to two years in prison as a warning to oth-ers. Those who professed their faith had to pay a high price. Despite the repression, people came to the Cathedral to pray in front of the image of the Mother of God. It is a special place where even to-day the faithful still ask for favors and offer thanks-giving for graces received.

Our Lady of Czestochowa, pray for us!

ST. JOSEPH CALASANZ (CALASANCTIUS)

St. Joseph of Calasanz, was born in 1557 in Aragon, Spain. He was well educated in philosophy, law and theology. His father wanted him to marry and continue the family, but on recovery from an illness which brought him close to death, he de-cided to become a priest. For ten years after he was ordained he held various posts as a secretary, administrator and theologian in the diocese of Albarracín in Spain.

In 1592 he went to Rome, where he became a theolo-gian in the service of Cardinal Marcoantonio Colonna and a tutor to his nephew. He worked alongside St. Camillus de Lellis during the plague that hit Rome at the time and helped carry the bodies of the dead on his own shoulders to burial.

Joseph worked with the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and soon he opened a school for homeless children himself. Within ten years he had rented a house at Sant’Andrea della Valle and started a com-munity for teaching poor children, which later were called the Piarists. Popes Clement VIII and Paul V both gave him financial help and soon he had a thousand children in his charge. In 1612, the school moved to San Pantaleo, near Piazza Navona, and this became the motherhouse of what came to be called the Pious Schools. In September 1616 the first public and free school in Frascati was started up on his initiative. A year later, Pope Paul V approved the “Congregation of the Pious Schools,” the first religious institute dedi-cated to teaching. During the following years Joseph was able to set up Pious Schools in various parts of Europe.

St. Joseph Calasanz was a man of great moral cour-age. He accepted Jewish children into his schools and made sure they were treated equally. Although Latin was the accepted language of the time, he defended and had textbooks in vernacular languages. He ad-vanced the study of mathematics and science. He was a friend of the scientist Galileo Galilei, and sent some of his Piarists to study with him. He shared and de-fended Galileo’s heliocentric view of the cosmos and even after Galileo was condemned and became blind, he stood by him. This caused opposition towards him and his congregation in influential quarters and he was removed from his post as superior general of the Pia-rists, but he remained patient and humble in the face of these trials.

St. Joseph Calasanz died in 1648, at the age of 90 and was buried in the church of San Pantaleo. Eight years after his death, Pope Alexander VII cleared his name and that of the Pious Schools so the Pia-rist congregation continued to spread throughout Eu-rope. It had considerable success in education of phys-ically and mentally disabled persons.

The Feast of St. Joseph Calasanz is celebrated in the new liturgical calendar on August 25 and in the old calendar on August 27. He is the Patron Saint of Cath-olic Schools.

ADORATION OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR

One thing is certain, that next to Holy Communion, no act of worship is so pleasing to God and none is so useful, as the daily visit to our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament dwell-ing upon our altars. Know that in one-quarter of an hour which you spend before Jesus in the Blessed Sacra-ment, you attain more than in all the good works of the rest of the day.

--Saint Alphonsus Maria de Ligouri BY FREQUENT CONFESSION…

-- Genuine self-knowledge is increased-- -- Christian humility grows-- -- Bad habits are corrected-- -- Spiritual neglect and tepidity are resisted-- -- The conscience is purified-- -- The will is strengthened-- -- A salutary self-control is attained-- -- Grace is increased in virtue of the Sacrament itself--

--Pope Pius XII

In heaven Mary remains always in the presence of her Divine Son. There she is continually praying

on behalf of sinners.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAYING FOR THE DYING FROM THE DIARY OF ST. FAUSTINA

Jesus said to St. Faustina: "Pray as much as you can for the dying. By your entreaties, obtain for them trust in My mercy, because they have most need of trust, and have it the least. Be assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in their final moment depends on your prayer. You know the whole abyss of My mercy, so draw upon it for yourself and especially for poor sinners. Sooner would heaven and earth turn into noth-ingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul." (Entry 1777)

Jesus said: "My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet. When hardened sin-ners say it, I will fill their souls with peace, and the hour of their death will be a happy one.... Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying per-son, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Savior. (Entry 1541)

+ I felt today how greatly a certain dying soul desired prayers. I prayed until I felt she had died. Oh, dying souls are in such great need of prayer! O Jesus, inspire souls to pray often for the dying. (Entry 1015)

+When I went to the garden one afternoon, my Guardian Angel said to me, "Pray for the dying." And so I began at once to pray the rosary with the gardeners for the dying. After the rosary, we said various pray-ers for the dying. After the prayers, the wards began to chat gayly among themselves. In spite of the noise they were making, I heard these words in my soul: "Pray for me!" But as I could not understand these words very well, I moved a few steps away from the wards, trying to think who it could be who was asking me to pray. Then I heard the words: "I am Sister ...."[78] This sister was in Warsaw while I was, at the time, in Vilnius. "Pray for me until I tell you to stop. I am dying." Immediately, I began to pray fervently for her, [addressing myself] to the expiring Heart of Jesus. She gave me no respite, and I kept praying from three [o'clock] until five. At five, I heard the words: "Thank you!" and I understood that she had died. But during Holy Mass on the following day, I continued to pray fervently for her soul. In the afternoon, a postcard came saying that Sister ... had died at such and such a time. I understood that it was at the same hour when she had said to me, "Pray for me." (Entry 314)

When I entered the chapel for a moment, the Lord said to me, My daughter, help Me to save a certain dy-ing sinner. Say the chaplet that I have taught you for him. When I began to say the chaplet, I saw the man dying in the midst of terrible torment and struggle. His Guardian Angel was defending him, but he was, as it were, powerless against the enormity of the soul's misery. A multitude of devils was waiting for the soul. But while I was saying the chaplet, I saw Jesus just as He is depicted in the image. The rays which issued from Jesus' Heart enveloped the sick man, and the powers of darkness fled in panic. The sick man peace-fully breathed his last. When I came to myself, I understood how very important the chaplet was for the dying. It appeases the anger of God. (Entry 1565)

your babyʹs name inscribed in our “Book of Lifeʺ.

LEGION OF MARY – REGINA MUNDI

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall follow-ing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more information on joining this ministry as an active or auxil-iary member please contact Melissa Becker at: [email protected]

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

SUBWAY ROSARY

Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth

Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gath-
