Renewed. Reinvigorated. Rebranded. In 2009 Fifty two
years of Australian Drivers Championship tradition, and
ten years of competitive Formula 3 racing in Australia will
come closer together under one banner to grow Austra-
lia’s premier Open Wheel category to new heights.
Previously promoted under the often confusing banner of
either ‘The Australian Formula 3 Championship’, the
‘Australian Drivers Championship or ‘The Gold Star’, 2009
witnesses a new title for the premier Wings and Slicks
category in Australia designed to encompass the best of
both worlds.
Hence the rebranding of the series to ‘The Formula 3 Aus-
tralian Drivers Championship’.
With the new title Australia’s only International category,
Formula 3, is recognised in the same breath as the prestig-
ious ADC, wherein the winner receives the CAMS Gold
Star award, the oldest continually awarded motorsport
trophy in Australia.
Therefore F3 champions who won in the Gold Star era –
from 2005 onwards – can now more easily be recognised
in the same breath as similar winners like Mark Skaife,
John Bowe, Alf Costanzo, Bib Stilwell and lex Davison.
It’s all about tying in the latest generation of Australian
Open Wheel racing to it’s amazing past.
Hence the series also continues to have international
credibility, thanks to the worldwide recognition of the
‘Formula 3’ brand and its position as the key developer of
driving talent for Formula 1 (In 2008 19 of the 22 drivers
in Formula 1 had raced in F3).
But now the series also speaks better to the domestic
market thanks to its embrace of the 53 years of tradition
that makes up the Australian Drivers Championship. It’s a
powerful combination.

Round 1 – Clipsal 500 Adelaide – Adelaide Street Circuit, South
Australia. March 19 – 22
Wings and slicks racing at the Clipsal 500. It’s a demanding chal-
lenge but the stars and cars of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers
Championship are well and truly up for the task; on the series
return in 2008, following a four year absence, F3 driver Neil
McFadyen lowered the outright track record by over two sec-
onds, lapping three seconds faster than a V8 Supercar in the
process.
Round 2 – Wakefield Park Raceway, Goulburn, NSW.

the action comes even thicker and faster than every.
Round 3 – Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Phillip Island, VIC.

In Australia, nothing is faster around the 4.46km GP Track two
hours southeast of Melbourne than a Formula 3 car – in fact, its
quicker than most things in the world. Averaging over 190km/hr
per lap, and generating corner forces in excess of 3G, the F3 lap
record of 1m27.2s is not only five seconds faster than a V8 Su-
percar – but three seconds quicker than Valentino Rossi’s Ya-
maha MotoGP world championship winning motorcycle!
Round 4 – Winton Motor Raceway, Benalla, VIC.

A place where wings and slicks cars work well. The tight layout
puts a premium on grip and F3 cars generate a lot of it. Winton
often produces tight racing with a leading car being hounded by
a pack of aggressive pursuers.
Round 5 – Eastern Creek International Raceway, Sydney, NSW.
July 17 – 19
The Cool and crisp winter air of Sydney welcomes the Formula 3 Australian
Drivers Championship for it’s now traditional July date. Almost always con-
tested in bright – if a tad chilly – conditions, EC is in many ways similar to the
Island – fast, flowing and a Formula 3 cars happy hunting ground.
Round 6 – Oran Park Grand Prix Circuit, Sydney, NSW.

This is likely to be an emotional race meeting as Augusts Oran Park date with
the Australian Drivers Championship could well be its last. From its days of
hosting the Australian Grand Prix and amazing F5000 Gold Star races in the
1970s, Oran Park has always been a favourite of the premier Open Wheel se-
ries in Australia. Look for an emotional send-off from a circuit known for pres-
sure-cooker races of high quality.
Round 7 – Tasmanian Formula 3 SuperPrix at Symmons Plains, Launceston,
TAS. Oct 16 – 18
The Tasmanian Formula 3 SuperPrix is the marquee Race of the 2009 Formula 3
Australian Drivers Championship. A stand alone event where open wheel cars
are the headline, the fast Symmons Plains raceway is an ideal hunting ground
for F3 racers and without fail produces amazing racing, with cars ducking and
weaving in a long freight train of cars as they tow down the back straight.
With massive local media coverage and a big local crowd, the F3 SuperPrix is
the longest race (45mins) on the calendar and the one every driver and team
wants to win.
Round 8 – Sandown Park Raceway, Melbourne, VIC.

The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship will return to Sandown for the
first time in 2009 after a five year absence, and the challenging circuit just off
Dandenong road will provide a fantastic place for the end of year showdown to
decide the 53rd
winner of the Australian Drivers Championship.

Engine: Two-litre production based four cylinder engine made by
major car companies including Mercedes Benz, Opel, Renault,
Mugen-Honda and FIAT. Race prepared by engine tuning compa-
nies to F3 specifications. All engines are controlled via a F3-
mandated 26mm air restrictor to cap revs and provide engine
parity.

F3 cars are the very best at giving young drivers the tools needed to not only drive cars for a profession - in Formula 1, IndyCar or V8 Supercars, for

Formula 3 cars are developed over a three-year cycle to
contain costs. Australian Formula 3 runs one generation
behind the European and British series’ to allow for a
supply of vehicles whilst still keeping the current
technology, performance and safety values.
Thus, the top level cars in Australia are the cars made
between 2005—2007 (Dallara F307).
Cars made between 2002 - 2004 run in the F3 National
Class, whilst the 1999 / 2000 / 2001 model cars race in the
F3 Trophy Class, giving F3 chassis long life and owners
time to recoup their investment over many years.
In the 2008 season, Formula 3 Australia delivered excellent
value for money for competing teams and drivers, and se-
ries sponsors, via its comprehensive exposure package.
Naming Rights supplier Kumho Tyres Australia received di-
rect references (by TV commentators or presenters), visual
exposure (logos on cars, driving suits or circuits) or promo-
tional airtime (Adverts, feature stories etc) in over 75% of
F3A’s 2008 TV package. This totals an exposure return of
approximately $350,000, based on airtime rates and time
generated.
This is well over 100% of the sponsors initial financial input
to the series.

Team BRM is the most successful team in
Australian Formula 3 history. Since 2002 the team has won 41 races (out of 112 - a win-ning percentage of nearly 40%), has scored
97 podium finishes and won four titles. In four of the past seven years Team BRM have won

Astuti Motorsport was formed in 2003 by Sam Astuti to tackle the competitive world of Aus-
tralian Formula 3 competition, With a long history of success in Formula 2, Formula
Holden and F3 racing.
The team came to prominence in 2004 with young gun Ian Dyk, winning three races,
taking the podium three times and smashing seven lap records around Australia.
2005 saw the team again lead the way, scor-ing early season success with Chris Alajajian
and Aaron Caratti, before a late season flourish with current driver Michael Trimble
saw two wins at the final round of the champi-onship. In 2006 the team began it's first steps
