Overview

• This session will compare and contrast the differences in formative and summative assessments and discuss when and why to use each type of assessment.

• The session will also demonstrate how to use Blackboard tools to create each of these assessment types.

Summative

• Design performance tasks or test items that require students to use the targeted thinking and content knowledge.

• Occurring at the end of a learning episode—for example, at the end of a course

• Characteristics of sound feedback include that it should be frequent, give students a clear picture of their progress and how they might improve, and provide encouragement.

•Tests are self-scoring (no essay or short answer questions).

Phrasing your Questions• Use simple vocabulary

• Avoid using too many negatives in a question (What might not have happened had the Allies not won the war)?

• Avoid using incomplete sentences (The Declaration of Independence was signed in the year _____.)

• Avoid using “all of the above” or the words always / never.

• Make answer choices similar length.
