DATE : - PAGE: 01/02 DEPTT. : CIVIL ENGINEERING LABORATORY: Concrete Lab SEMESTER : 4th Experiment No.1 Aim: - To determine standard consistency of cement. Apparatus::- Vicat’s apparatus with Vicat plunger (10mm dia and 50mm length), Vicat needles, Vicat’s mould, gauging trowel, measuring jar (100 to 200ml capacity), weighing balance, stop watch & weight box. Theory:- The object of this test is to find out the amount of water to be added to the cement to get a paste of normal consistency i.e the paste of certain standard solidity, which is used to fix the quantity of water to be mixed in cement before performing tests for setting time, soundness and compressive strength. Procedure: 1. Take 400gm of cement passing through 850 micron I.S sieve and prepare a paste of cement with about 25% i.e 100gm of clean water and mixed properly by means of spatula on a non porous surface taking care that the gauging time is between 3 to 5 minutes. Gauging time is counted from the time of adding water to dry cement until commencing to fill the mould. 2. Fill the Vicat mould resting upon non porous plate with this paste. After completely filling the mould, smooth off the surface of the paste by single movement of palm making it level with the top of mould. The mould may be slightly shaken to expel the air. 3. Place the test block in mould with the non porous resting plate under the rod attached with the plunger. 4. Lower the plunger of 10mm dia and 50mm length attached to the moveable rod at the top surface of the paste in the mould and release it quickly without any jerk, freely under gravity. 5. Note down the penetration of needle. If the penetration is between 33 to 35mm, water added is the required water for normal consistency. If the penetration is not proper, repeat the process with different percentage of water. Observations: Quantity of cement used (C) = ------------------- gm S.No. Quantity of water added %age by weight Gauging Time (Minutes) Penetration from bottom of mould (mm) 1

1. Take 400gm of cement passing through 850 micron I.S sieve and prepare a paste of cement with about 25% i.e 100gm of clean water and mixed properly by means of spatula on a non porous surface taking care that the gauging time is between 3 to 5 minutes. Conclusion: Percentage of water required for preparing cement of standard consistency is------------------.

Precautions:1. The experiment should be conducted at a room temperature of 27± 2o C and at a relative

humidity of 90 percent2. After half minute from the instant of adding water, it should be thoroughly mixed with

fingers for atleast one minute. 3. The plunger should be released quickly without pressure or jerk after the rod is brought

down to touch the surface of test block.4. For each repetition of the experiment, fresh cement is to be taken.5. Plunger should be cleaned during every repetition and make sure that it moves freely and

that there are no vibrations.
