cured in ovens or, when more pressure is required, inautoc laves and mechanical presses. Thesetemperatures and pressures normally exceed 250°Fand 50 psi. Vacuum bagging produces exceptionallystrong parts with little, if any, air entrapment. Formingto every contour of the part, vacuum bagging, in manycases, eliminates the need for expensive matched-diemolds and presses while producing higher-qualityparts.

Bonding and laminating are accomplishedusing a variety of methods, one of which is"vacuum bagging". Vacuum baggingsurrounds the part being bonded with anairtight membrane or diaphragm and utilizesthe surrounding pressure to squeeze thevacuum bagged article. Typically, the articleis laid up on a mold or baseplate whichdefines the surface shape of the article. Anairtight membrane is placed over the articleand sealed along the perimeter of the mold. Avacuum source is attached to the membraneand the air is removed, allowing thesurrounding pressure to force the membranetight against the article being bonded, similarto a vacuum-packaged item. Once the articleis vacuum bagged, it is allowed to cure for aspecific amount of time. For articlescomprising heat-activated (thermoset) orheat-formed (thermoplastic) resins andadhesives, the vacuum-bagged articles are

Taking advantage of the surrounding air or gas pressure to form and clamp items is a very efficient, effective way to bond or laminate a product. Torr's main objective is to provide you with high quality,easy-to-use tools and hardware for producing parts in this manner. Toward this end we offer theT7TM (pat. pend.) vacuum bagging system. It is the simplest, most effective, and efficient way tovacuum bag. Throughout this catalog are examples of T7 tools demonstrating their adaptability anddiversity. Also presented are a variety of tools to apply vacuum and pressure to items which can'tutilize the T7 seal. For vacuum bagging components, we design and manufacture our own vacuumhoses and probes, and offer a selection of quick-disconnects, elastomers, and vacuum pumps.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SPEAKING...Every year, thousands of tons of petroleum-based plastic film andsealant tape are disposed of in our landfills. Just one 4' x 8' moldcan produce more than 700 lbs of bagging waste annually. Whilereducing labor costs, material costs, and producing higher-qualityparts more consistently, Torr tools take a gigantic step towardreducing your company's impact on the environment. Also, nearly100% of the small amount of metal and silicone rubber wasteproduced in the manufacturing of a Torr tool is recycled...and ifyou ever retire one of your Torr systems, most of the componentmaterials are recycleable as well. Take a look at the processeswhich create the most waste and vacuum bagging with plastic filmwill be at or near the top of the list.

3

In the production of advanced compositeparts, compacting or debulking involvesvacuum bagging a part at various stagesin the lay-up process to reduce the amountof air trapped in the layers of pre-preg. Itis not uncommon for a laminate to undergocompaction after placement of each ply. This can amount to more than 50compaction cycles before the final cure. Insuch cases, a Torr vacuum bagging toolcan pay for itself during the production ofjust one part.

By using a Torr System, you will:

1) Cut labor and material costs dramatically2) Improve part surface and structural quality3) Have a repeatable manufacturing process4) Eliminate plastic film and sealant disposal costs5) Reduce part rejection and secondary finishing6) Increase productivity

VACUUM & PRESSURE BAGGING METHODSAn outdated, yet common method of vacuum bagging advanced composites and other types of laminatesinvolves applying a thin strip of sealant tape or putty to the perimeter of the mold on which the part is laidup. Plastic film is placed over the laminate and pressed into the sealant. Once the air is removed andthe part is cured, the sealant and film are thrown away and the sealant residue is cleaned off of the mold. The plastic film's low elasticity creates low and high pressure areas and its tendency to wrinkle causesresin ridges on the laminate which may require extensive rework. These bags are labor-intensive,environmentally unsound, and create quality control problems. Torr replaces the "one shot, throw away"plastic-film-and-sealant bag with a vacuum bagging tool that can be used hundreds of times.

LOOK AT THE ADVANTAGESECONOMY - Bagging time is reduced by more than 90%! Bagging film and sealant costs, as wellas the purchasing, inventory, and disposal of those items, are greatly reduced. Torr systemsreduce, and in some cases eliminate, part rejection and rework. Manufacturers are discovering thatbidding jobs using Torr vacuum bagging tools gives them a competitive edge over companies usingoutdated, inefficient bagging methods, including poorly designed reusable vacuum bags.QUALITY - Our high-strength conformable elastomers distribute pressure more evenly andeliminate wrinkles so both physical and cosmetic properties of laminates are improved, resulting ina higher level of quality in your manufacturing process.CONSISTENCY - The variables associated with plastic film bag construction are eliminated.Consistent, repeatable results are obtained every time you vacuum bag.SERVICE - We provide our customers help and assistance through system care manuals, maintenance and repair manuals, repair kits, instructional videos, and our toll-free 800 number.

Torr considers many factors in designing and manufacturing tools for its customers. We look at theenvironment the tools will be used in and construct them accordingly. Factors such as:CURE ENVIRONMENT - Whether it's autoclave, oven, press, or room temp, Torr matches the tooldesign and construction to the process.LAY-UP ENVIRONMENT - Ceiling height, storage space, mold size, part height...every customerhas their own particular requirements as to where and how parts are laid up and bagged. Fromhinges to integral pneumatic lift systems to simple frame-mounted handles, Torr constructs tools thatfit into the environment they will be used in.

PLUS...

MOLD DESIGN - The design of the mold sealing area is extremely important for trouble-free,economical implementation of permanent vacuum bagging tools. By following the design guidelineson the opposite page, the vacuum bagging systems manufactured for the molds you construct willbe the least costly, the longest lasting, and the easiest to use. Call Torr and we'll provide you withour recommendations for each specific mold you're working on.

Manufacturers looking to gain acompetitive edge by modernizing theirproduction facilities and processes arediscovering that the quickest, mosteffective way to reduce costs and increaseprofits is to implement the use of TorrVacuum Bagging Tools. With Torr, youeliminate the variables of labor-intensive,hand-built bags. The rewards are highprocess quality, consistent, repeatablebagging results, and dramatically lowerproduction costs.

Eliminate as many curves aspossible. If 1 straight sectioncauses the mold to be too large, break up the curve into 2 or 3straight sections. If curvescannot be avoided, make themalong one axis only, i.e. nocompound curves. Every curveand angle built into the framelimits the option of hinging thevacuum bagging tool to the mold.

Eliminate compound curves inthe sealing area. Construct themold so that the sealing areachanges direction along 2 axisonly, not 3. Compound curveswill increase frame, seal, anddiaphragm costs. If you need tofollow the part contour moreclosely, change mold edgedirection after or before the curveby at least 3", not in the middleas shown in the left hand mold.

For relatively small molds, truncateribs or "hat-sections" and provide aflat sealing area whenever possible. The only other option would be toplace the entire mold onto a largerbaseplate for bagging. In thisexample, the upstanding portion ofthe mold has been truncated andtapered down to a flat sealing area. This minor design change will cutthe cost of a reusable baggingsystem by at least 40% and allowthe vacuum bagging tool to behinged to the mold.

MOLD DESIGN GUIDELINES Dashed line indicates edge of layup or part

Allowances must be made forbreather material, release film, vacuum and thermocoupleconnections, as well as the vacuumseal. Allow at least 5" beyond theedges of the layup for the sealingarea. If the vacuum tool is to behinged, allow an additional 2" alongthe hinge edge.

In this example, the sealing area ofthe middle and right molds hasbeen increased. The right mold hasgone a step furthur and eliminatedthe top horiontal flange.

When designing and constructing molds, there are a number of design criteria that will result in more efficient, less costlyimplementation of reusable vacuum bagging systems.

The mold on the right has a narrowsealing area and the sharp radii ofthe part extend to the edges of themold. Below left, the sealing areahas been widened and the radii inthe sealing area have beenmodified. Below right, a flat, planarsealing area has been created. Ifthe part contour allows it, this is themost efficient design.

T-7™ VACUUM & PRESSURE BAGGING TOOLSThere are other types of vacuum bagging systems available but nothing comes close to the dependabilityand simplicity of the T7 system. It readily adapts to existing molds and provides the manufacturer withthe most consistent, highest quality parts possible. T7 systems are not just vacuum bags, they'reinvaluable production tools. Here's why:

T7 tools don't rely on diaphragm tensionto initiate and hold vacuum as other typesof systems do. Leaks caused by stress-induced diaphragm breakdown andtension set, common in other reusablesystems, are eliminated. Since diaphragmlooseness does not affect the T7 seal, laminates with high profiles near the edgeof the mold can easily be accommodated. This also means that disastrous sealblow-outs caused by the thermalexpansion of the silicone diaphragm atelevated temperatures are eliminated.Unlike other reusable systems, with theT7 tool, the seal integrity of the 500thcycle is as good as the first.

The precision welded frame coupled withthe conformable T7 seal means nothaving numerous clamps and closuremechanisms lining the perimeter of themold. The angled leg of the T7 seal flexesto follow the contour of the mold. Theweight of the vacuum bagging tool isusually sufficient to initiate the seal; it'ssimply a matter of placing the T7 tool ontothe mold and applying vacuum. Onceinitiated, the seal is furthur enhanced byincreased vacuum and autoclavepressure.

1-800-845-4424 FAX 253-735-0437

T7 tools combine a precision, custom-fitframe with the highest quality siliconeelastomers and the T7 seal . With theframe, blanket, and seal being anintegrated package, T7 tools do away withmodification of the customer's molds ortooling. There are no grooves to bemachined or extrusions to be bonded.Since the surface of the mold is free andclear of all obstructions, you can lay-up,cure, and remove parts from the moldwithout damaging a cr i t ical sealcomponent of the vacuum baggingsystem.

Torr's thru-blanket and thru-mold thermocouple connectionsaccept standard size thermocouple plugs and can be locatedanywhere on the tool. The female connectors are made fromhigh-grade thermocouple alloys and are available in type J or K.

HIGH-STRENGTH ELASTOMERS INTERFLOW TM BREATHER PATTERN RUBBEROur EL78, EL80, and EL80M silicone elastomers have the besttrack record in the industry, outperforming all other materials inindependent laboratory tests. See the Elastomers section for acomplete listing of the elastomers and their specifications.

This amazing product does away with conventional throw-awaybreather cloth in many applications, such as bonding curedskins, compacting, metal bonding, and wood or glass laminating. See the Elastomers section for more information.

HINGES HANDLING SYSTEMSWhenever possible, T7 tools should be hinged to the mold orbaseplate. They index the tool precisely and provide storage ofthe tool during mold cleaning and part layup. Nickel-plated T7hinges have built-in stops that support the frame when open.

For large tools and/or automation, Torr provides stand-alone orintegral mechanical and pneumatic lift systems. Reinforcedlifting points for overhead cranes or simple, ergonomic heavyduty aluminum handles for manual lifting are other options.

For vacuum bagging metal-bond assemblies, pre-curedskins, glass, wood, thermoplastics, or for compacting ordebulking pre-preg laminates without breather material,Interflow's the answer. There are other types of patternedrubber available to remove air without breather material butthey all incorporate a coarse pattern over the entire surfaceand they don't breathe very well. Interflow can be applied toall of our high strength elastomers. Because the surface ofthe rubber has a molded grid pattern, more than 70% of thecontact area is flat, providing better pressure distribution andsuperior breathing characteristics. Compared with otherbreather pattern silicone sheet, Interflow costs less. Seephoto on page 7.

Torr stocks a variety of high-strength and commercialgrade extruded silicone rubber shapes used for seals, pressure intensifiers, fairing bars, and tube bondingbladders. Please refer to our price list for a complete listingof stock sizes.CUSTOM EXTRUSIONS AVAILABLE
