Dear Friends, December is upon us, and many of our thoughts turn toward Christmas. The decorations are going up around the neighborhood and in the church, people are beginning to prepare for visitors and thinking about helping strangers in this season of good will to all women, children, and men. The good news of the birth of Christ permeates almost every aspect of our lives, and with that infusion we find it easier and more pleasant to be concerned for our fellow human beings. I believe it was by no mistake that the poor were the people God chose to greet the

Christ-child: Shepherds who had little but the job no self-respecting citizen would want, and people who hadn’t enough room to allow a place in the more comfortable living quarters they shared. Certainly it wasn’t the rich and powerful who were to encounter the infant at the most helpless time of his life. His safety and his legacy were placed squarely into the hands of “the least of these.” They cared for this little child, knowing that when he grew and if he became powerful their care would likely be forgotten, and he would see them as the rest of the world saw them: as people to be used and replaced at the whim of the powerful. The good news of Christmas is that Jesus never forgot. Mary and Joseph were able to remember who honored this child they were to raise, and I am most certain they told Jesus all about the extra-ordinary means in which these people honored him. Through all of this Jesus was to teach that the poor and the humble were blessed, because God’s favor still rests upon them. Jesus was to chal-lenge the comfortable and remind them if they had too many clothes to share with those who had none, and if there was extra food it was to be given to those who had need, and if there were those who longed for human company those who could give that time and listening ear were to make the effort to visit. The good news of Christmas is challenging to those of us who have more, as it brings that abundance to the top, and we are encouraged to share more at this time of year because of that lowly birth we celebrate. This Christmas season is going to be a time of learning and sharing and growing for us here at United Methodist Church of Ludington. You have several traditional events and different aspects of those events than I have been used to in the past. There will certainly be a few things that may be a bit different, and change of something like Christmas Celebrations is not easy; yet I believe that as our plans unfold, and events are planned, we shall all find blessings in the familiar and in the new. Each season brings opportunities to experience together the growing of the body of Christ, the getting used to each other and the ways things are done around here. Let us all remember that we are all trying to do our best to celebrate together the love of Christ for all the people: children, women, and men; the poor, the rich, and those in-between. May the Spirit of Jesus the Christ shine through all we do this season, and may the world hear once again the good news: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger...Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:10b-12, 14, KJV).

The Children’s Christmas Program

Parent and Sunday school children: The pro-

gram is right around the corner. We ask that

you please be faithful in attendance during

these very crucial weeks before the play.

There will be a special run-through on stage on

December 14 from 10 am to noon. This is our

only chance to practice in the sanctuary. There

will be a snack provided during this time as

well. We will also practice during Sunday

school on the 15th. Students will then get into

costume in between services and will be ready

to go at 11 am for the performance. Invite your

family and neighbors and don’t forget to bring

your cameras. Thank you!

Christmas Eve Service

Don’t forget about our children’s Christmas Eve program

at 6 pm on December 24. There will be music and a

special story for the kids. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Toys For Tots

Our Sunday school offering is going

toward Toys for Tots. We will use the

money from November and December to

purchase new toys. Salvation Army will

distribute these to families in need in our

community. Children can also bring in a

new toy for our collection as well if they

would like to. Thank you for participating

and helping out this holiday season.

Our church is running a Coats and Boots for Kids program

and is in need of many items to distribute to kids in need. We

accept donations of coats, boots, snow pants, waterproof gloves,

and hats. This program has been very successful as last winter

we gave out over 300 coats and 150 pairs of boots. There is a

huge need for this is our area and we need your help!

Donations can be dropped off at the church during office hours

or in the drop box by the main doors anytime. Financial dona-

tions are also accepted so we can purchase needed items we

don’t have. These can also be dropped off at the church or

mailed to the church address. Thank you so much for helping us

keep the children in our community warm, healthy and happy.

My dear Church Family, I cannot begin to express my appreciation for your caring words, hugs, support, cards, and prayers during the last few months of Don’s struggles with pneumonia. You have certainly carried us through this difficult time and now with Don’s pass-ing into the loving arms of our dear Lord and Savior, I have felt bathed in prayer, peace and much relief as Don is no longer suffering. We were blessed with 56 years of marriage, and Don certainly was a man of much strength, courage and a fighter, never to give up. I have been overwhelmed by the number of cards received and so many that came to Don’s funeral. I thank Pastor Dennis for his pastoral and spiritual care and I am so thankful he was with me at the time of Don’s death. I also thank the United Methodist Women and our choir people who put on the lovely luncheon after the service. Don’s ashes have been laid to rest in our lovely memorial garden where I will join him some-day. May you all be blessed for all you do for God’s people. In Christian love, Lynne Gohn

Dear United Methodist Friends, Thank you for thinking of me with your prayers and a lovely hand-knit lap robe. I felt your many blessings and sincere kindness.

Forever Grateful, Marilyn Raven Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Holi-day Fine Arts and Crafts Show rug booth November 15-16: Nancy Kelley, Janelle Schade, Jane Clark, Ka-ren O’Brien, Monica Stewart, Marcia Olmstead, Priscilla McBeth, Anita Freeland, and recruiter Karen Genson. It’s that time of the year again! Bell-ringers from our church will start bellringing for Salvation Army Fri-day, November 29 at Walmart’s food door (west door). Ringers work Mon-

day through Saturday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm through Monday, December 23. Bill McBeth and Bev and Dave Hamman will have a signup sheet in the narthex before and after each Sunday worship ser-vice, or you may call the Hammans at 845-0174. From Janelle Schade, Church Women United Rep for United Methodist Women: The Salvation Army /Marine Corps Toys for

Tots is again making an appeal for toys. The Sal-vation Army is more in need this year due to budget cuts. We will have a cardboard box in Fel-lowship Hall next to the tree to deposit toy items. It is okay to have gifts for teens also. The box will be at our church until December 9, as distri-bution will be that Saturday. Many less fortunate children will be able to have toys under their trees because of our efforts. Please consider a gift to this worthwhile project.

This year’s Mitten Tree will be located inside the Fifth Third Bank in front of Briggs Hardware. Monica Stewart and Janelle Schade will be at the Mitten Tree on Tuesday, December 3 from 12:30 to 4:00 pm to collect any mittens, scarves, hats or funds for the mitten tree project. Other churches will be there December 2 through 6. Bring store-bought items if you don’t knit or crochet. Norma Koeppe of our church is the citywide project chairperson for this annual event, and she collects and distributes yarn to knitters all year. Mittens and scarves are put in each Christmas basket given out by the Salvation Army, and the remainder are given to schools. This is a worthwhile project supported by the United Methodist Women and Church Women United.

Our next American Red Cross Blood Drive will be Friday, December 13 from 12:00 to 6:00 pm. Please call the church office at 843-8340 and volunteer to give blood, bake or buy cookies, or staff the Canteen Table or Registration Table.

United Methodist Women

Executive Board will meet Friday, Dec. 6 at 1:00 pm. The United Methodist Women will assist West Shore Bank East Ludington Office with its Christmas Open House once again this year. We are to provide 50-60 dozen handmade Christmas cookies; make coffee and punch; and keep the re-freshment table stocked with cookies, punch and coffee from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Friday, December 13. We need 20 people to each bake and donate 3 dozen decorated Christmas cookies, and ladies to work two hour shifts that day at the bank. Please call Karen Genson at 843-2482 or the church office if you can help in some way. The UMW Christmas Tea is scheduled for Satur-day, December 14 at 1:30 pm. Becky Sopha and Friends will provide delightful entertainment, and there will be delicious treats to eat and visiting to be done. Please be sure to reserve this time on your cal-endar for this treat for yourself and maybe a guest or two. See you there! The Ruth-Naomi Circle will meet at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, December 18 in Fellowship Hall. Lo-raine Abrahamson and Phyllis Larsen will host and Barb Bush will provide the program. Please feel free to join us, even if you have never attended before. We would love to have you!

Ongoing Prayer Concerns

PRAYER REQUEST CARDS are located in the pews, the nar- thex and the Volun-teer’s Desk. Requests are prayed over on Tuesday mornings and are kept confiden-tial. They are prayed over for 30 days unless updated for a longer period of time. All prayer requests are kept in the office. If you have an urgent prayer request, you may activate the prayer chains by calling the church office at 843-8340. If the church office is closed, you may call either Lynne Gohn (843-4746) or Anne Estle (843-6263).
