More Rev. Ron Iris, recently retired Detroit Confer-ence United Methodist pastor and brother of Rommie MacDonald, has volunteered to be our new webmaster and also to manage our online pictorial directory. Thank you, Ron! Ron and his wife Carla have a home in Victory Township. Carla will play piano for the 8:15 am summer service. Watch upcoming bulletins for details about the web-site and the online directory. Bill and Laura Walker will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary Sunday, July 11. Most of their children and grandchildren are coming in from Alaska, Florida, New York, New Mexico and Ari-zona to help them celebrate. Please join the family for coffee, cake and conversation after the 11:00 service on July 11 in Fellowship Hall.

Relay for Life has a motto: Celebrate. Remember. Fight back. And our church team did just that!! Right from the beginning of the opening ceremony on Saturday to the closing event on Sunday, every-one present knew they were participating in some-thing very special. Joyful tears for the survivors wearing purple t-shirts, quiet reflection for those who are now a beloved memory, defiance and hope on the part of those presently in the battle. And we took a stand right beside them. Twenty-nine Mason County teams raised over $74,000. Our team raised over $8500 of that amount. To all of you who passed along their prayers, walked, visited us at the tent, and worked at the event--you have our gratitude. Now, get ready for next year, because the fight continues. Cris Wegener

XYZ Trip July 16 to Dulcimer Festival in Evart, Michigan

The 39th Annual Dulcimer Festival is taking place at the Osceola County Fairgrounds at Evart, Michigan July 15-18, 2010. Seven from our XYZ seniors group attended the Friday session of last year‟s Festi-val and had such a good time that we are planning to attend again. This year‟s Friday session is on July 16. We plan to leave our church parking lot at 10:30 am that day, arrive at the Fairgrounds in time for lunch at one of the concessions, spend the afternoon lis-tening to a variety of the wonderful music being played throughout the Fairgrounds, have a bite to

eat there for supper, and then take in a portion of the eve-ning concert before leaving for Ludington, arriving back at church at about 8:30 pm. I

have reserved the church van for use that day, so I hope we will have enough folks attending to fill the van. If more want to attend, we will arrange to have a couple of people drive their cars to accommodate these. The cost per person will be the admission cost of $5.00, the cost of your meals at the concessions, and $3.00 for gas for the van. If you enjoy music, I think you would really enjoy this Festival. If you are interested in attending, please sign up on the sheet posted on the Volunteer Office bulletin board by July 11. Allan Carlson

The 8th Annual MAD Ride to benefit HELP Ministries will begin at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Ludington Saturday, August 21, 2010. Since the MAD Ride has become HELP‟s premier fund-raising event, there are many incentives for rid-ers who obtain sponsorship for their ride. See the letter on the Volunteer Office bulletin board, pick up a flyer/sponsor sheet from the Volunteer Office counter, and/or check out www.helpmadride.com.

The Sleeping Bag Ministry needs sturdy dark fabrics for the outside of the sleeping bags: maybe bedspreads, drapes or other fabrics no longer of use in your home. If you would like to volunteer to help clean the church, please contact Pastor Tom. Pastor Ken‟s retirement will allow more lay involve-ment in the worship service. If you would occa-sionally like to offer the pastoral prayer, please contact Pastor Tom.

After crawling into Grandpa‟s lap, little Freddie asked, “Were you in the ark with Noah, Grandpa?” The grandfather chuckled, “Why, no, Son, I wasn‟t.” The youngster persisted, “Then why weren‟t you drowned?”

United Methodist Church of Ludington Proposed by Wally Brown, Sound/Video Coordinator

Passed by Administrative Board June 22, 2010

Our church has a state-of-the-art sound and video system which can be used for weddings, funerals, memorial ser-vices and other activities. When the Senior Pastor is not able to handle the sound by himself, we need an au-thorized sound tech to run this system; both for security purposes and for appropriate use of the equipment. The following fees will be charged to the requesting party, thereby not incurring any expense to the church. Guidelines:

Tech requests will be made via appropriate format through the office, and approved by appropriate staff. Only church-appropriate audio and video will be used at any time. Only authorized techs are permitted to operate and be in the audio-video system area. (There is a list of au-thorized techs on file in the office.) The tech must receive all materials that he/she is expected to use at least 48 hours in advance of the activity. Stipends must be paid by the requesting party at least 48 hours in advance of the service.

Fee Schedule Church members: Audio only—$50 per hour for all or any part of each hour Audio and video—$75 per hour for all or any part of each hour Non-church members: Audio only—$75 per hour for all or any part of each hour Audio and video—$100 per hour for all or any part of each hour. Changes to the above guidelines can be adjusted if necessary by the Senior Pastor.

Mission Project: Since 1995 more than 22 thousand PETs (Personal Energy

Transportation) have traveled to 86 countries to provide mobility, dignity, hope, and

even the ability to work and provide for their families to 22,335 leg-handicapped

persons. This number includes child-size PETs. For folks without sufficient coordination or

upper body strength to operate a hand-cranked PET, the adaptable vehicle is now available in

push-PET and pull-PET models.

PETs are in use in 36 African countries. In just the countries of Zambia and the

Congo there are 4,400 people on a waiting list for a PET. Following the VBS African

together! (Lumber for one PET $22, a solid tire $36, crank assembly $18, etc.)

* If mosquitoes might be a problem, you may wish to use repellent on your children before dropping them off at the pavilion. If the

weather looks threatening, we will move into the church for VBS. Children will sing a VBS song at 9:30 worship July 25!

Thank you for the use of your wonderful church. Sheryl Martin, AFFEW Treasurer (Editor’s Note: A Few Friends for the Environment of the World donated $200 to our church after their Earth Day Cele-bration here April 17).

To the congregation of the Ludington United Meth-odist Church, My name is Cory Young and I have been very for-tunate to receive both financial assistance as well as prayers and support from your church while I am at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evans-ton, Illinois. I have been truly blessed to be in the thoughts and prayers of your community, and I know that I am not in school by myself. There are times in the life of a seminary student that you won-der how you will afford to be in school (and afford food and gas at times too); and needless to say, your contribution has helped me greatly. I am the son of Carole Young, who is the girlfriend of Ted Towl, and I started seminary last fall. My undergraduate de-gree was in broadcasting from Grand Valley State University, and then I worked for seven years in the corporate sector before deciding that I needed to take up the call that God had for me. So last summer I left my job and started on this new path that God has laid before me. My goal is to be-come a campus minister and bring a better under-standing of God to those who are seeking their own faith. It is with great joy that I can tell you that my se-mester finished with a 3.2 grade point average and I am very pleased. I will do my best to keep you up to date in my schooling and my progress through the next two years. From the bottom of my heart I cannot thank you enough, and I hope that in my future I can offer the same type of support as you have offered me. May God bless you. Cory Young (Editor’s note: If you would like to write words of encouragement to Cory, his campus address is 916 1/2 Noyes, Apt. X2, Evanston, IL 60201).

Our church thanks photographer Russ Miller, who donated to us an Epson Stylus color printer. The printer will allow us to print color pages as large as 11x17 inches, and will provide backup for our smaller color printer.

Dear Pastor Ken, Pastor Tom, and all of United Methodist Church, We would like to thank you for helping us to be able to send my son Drake to Bible Camp. I feel it will be a wonderful opportunity for him to learn more about God and make new friends. We have never felt such love and concern in any other church we‟ve been to. Thank you for your generosity and prayers. Love in Christ, Sharon, Rusty & Drake Fulker

Thank you for all of the cards and warm wishes as my family and I transition out of full time ministry and into new endeavors. We have certainly enjoyed our years of ser-vice to this church and have some great memories to cherish. Thank you for your years of support and a shared vision to reach a new generation with the love of Christ. Sincerely, Zach, Jill, Jonah, and Ethan Sweet

A Report on Annual Conference By Al Bouda, Lay Member

The Forty-second Session of the West Michigan an-nual Conference was held June 3-6, 2010 on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michi-gan. Attended by approximately 1,000 Clergy and Lay Members, the Conference was declared by Bishop J. D. Keaton to be a huge success. Each daily session consisted of Worship, Business and Legislative segments as well as special speakers bringing uplifting messages. The Conference in-cluded a Memorial Service for departed members of Clergy, introduction of new members of Clergy and special recognition of retiring Clergy. (Our Pastor Ken Tabor spoke eloquently during the latter ses-sion). On the legislative front, of interest to UMCL was the rejection of a motion to return the annual Minis-try Shares to 10% of reported specific income. That motion was rejected and then adjusted to 12.6% in lieu of the 12.4% that had been in effect, to accom-modate a modest increase for conference employee salaries. The recommendation that the Conference

be moved from Calvin College was also rejected. Other elements of legislative business were also en-acted, but none had an immediate and direct impact upon UMCL. Of interest to all was a presentation by three leaders of The United Methodist Church for All People, located in Columbus, Ohio. Initiated in 1999 as a “Free Store” focused on mission work within the community, the organization rapidly grew into a for-mal church by 2003. The concept of the “Free Store” as based on allowing people to take from the items contained therein, that which they needed, and not what was presumed to be “suitable.” As of 2010 this inner city mission has now touched 110,000 people. Many of these persons are now part of and working within the organization. All items in the store are donated goods, and the directors of the store rapidly discovered that donations increased with the need to maintain supplies. They discussed the concept of “Radical Hospitality” and “Abundant Giving” as the driving force for the success of their organization (issues discussed by Pastor Tom last year). Their church has now grown to include food and meals as well as material goods. They have joined with another local church to provide meals to the needy several days a week. Their final speaker emphasized the importance of personal relationships with and within the membership of the congrega-tion. He said, “In this case, it‟s not just about „those people,‟ it‟s about us” (all of us). Worthy of note is the fact that our former pastor Bill Dobbs, currently the Heartland District Superinten-dent, is being appointed to the cabinet post of Clergy Assistant to the Bishop. The program materials for the session honoring re-tiring members of clergy contained written state-ments from each individual. I include below a very brief segment of the words written by two pastors, close to the hearts of UMCL, and whose presence in our midst provided enrichment to our lives. Joe Elenbaas: In our retirement Mary and I are enjoying our home in the pines on our eighty acres where we gaze at the stars, feed the trout in our ponds, work the land and continue to discover the presence of God in all that is around us. Ken Tabor: Always moving to deeper waters where ministry was needed, I feel blessed. When meeting people at their deep-est needs, I have learned the meaning of being on Holy Ground. I am in awe.

A group of eight recently returned from an 11-day Haiti mission trip. Five were members of UMCL: Bob Neal, Nate Carrier (age 15), Rommie Mac-Donald, and Dave and Bev Hamman. Others on the mission team include Tracy Neal, Bob‟s daughter; Natascha Hamman 16-year-old granddaughter of Dave and Bev; and Suzi Hutchison, member of the Brighton United Methodist Church. Our church sponsors a school in Baudin. We hired three men from Haiti to put a roof on the elemen-tary school and we assisted them. We also repaired the Baudin Methodist Church roof, put up two bas-ketball backboards, rims and nets, and a volleyball court. We purchased food for a few Haitian women to cook for all the 300 schoolchildren and we helped serve them lunch. On Saturday, we conducted a Va-cation Bible School for approximately 200 children and served them a lunch of rice, beans and fish.

The team and finished roof on Baudin Elementary School

Many items were taken to Haiti including school supplies of lined paper, pencils, pens, chalk, chalk-board eraser, calculators, and teaching supplies. We brought several basketballs, soccer balls and volley-balls. We also brought 36 t-shirts with the United Methodist logo on them for one school class to use when they travel to special events. We supplied, and left behind, many tools for the construction projects, including battery-operated drills and a saw, since there is no electricity in the village of Baudin.

On our free day, we drove 17 miles outside of Cap Haitien to visit two World Heritage sites, the Citadel and Sans Souci Palace. We all went on an hour-long horseback ride to get to the top of a mountain to see the Citadel fortress.

The team at leisure

In Port-au-Prince, we visited the Methodist Chil-dren‟s Orphanage. The children still will not live in their house damaged by the earthquake. They live in tents in the orphanage complex. School is conducted in tents on a side road. We also visited King‟s Hos-pital/orphanage/school and the men from our team installed a volleyball court for the school. In Port-au-Prince, there is still lots of rubble but much of it has been removed. Reconstruction is taking place, with new building going up and old ones being repaired. Each team member had something to offer the peo-ple of Haiti, and all of us received so much more in return.

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me,” said one boy. Sev-eral dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.” He knew just what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. “Come here quick,” the boy said. “You won‟t believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up souls!” The man said, “Beat it, kid. Can‟t you see it‟s hard for me to walk?” But when the boy insisted, the man slowly hobbled to the cemetery. Standing by the fence, they heard, “One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.” The old man whispered, “Boy, you‟ve been telling me the truth. Let‟s see if we can see the Lord.” Tightly gripping the iron bars of the fence, the old man and the boy peered into the cemetery but couldn‟t see anything. At last they heard, “One for you, one for me. That‟s all...now let‟s go get those nuts by the fence and we‟ll be done.” They say the old man made it back to town a full five minutes ahead of the kid on the bike. Submitted by Lyn Pingle
