Volume 14, Issue 1 September 2007 Vienna High School Vienna, Illinois Football and Volleyball added to VHS sports program The beginning of the 2007-2008 school year brought new excitement to Vienna. For the first time in 75 years VHS is home the VHS Eagles football team and the first ever volleyball team. VHS has not had a football team since 1932. Thanks to the commitment and vision of our superintendent, Dr. Marleis Trover, as well as the involvement of the community and willingness of the students, Vienna High School has now made that dream come true. Mike Rude was called upon to be the new football coach earlier this spring. A former coach at Johnston City, this will be his 39th year of coaching. The fall season started with a Saturday game at Massac County on August 25. The Eagles QB Colten Krelo ran 70 yards to score a touchdown on the first play of the game, to start the season with a BANG! Although the Eagles lost 20-14, the crowd and community were pleasantly surprised, since the Eagles led 14-6 at halftime. All summer, for about three hours a day, the football team practiced hard with the new equipment and coach. “We are improving everyday we step on the practice field,” said Coach Rude. In their second game, the Eagles traveled to Marion and defeated the Wildcats 42-14, to win the first football game in 75 years. To be eligible to play football, you have to be a freshman or sophomore student at VHS. Though some of the upperclass students may feel that they missed out on the opportunity to play, they can still cheer on the team. Volleyball is the second sport that has been added to the VHS athletic program this year. Chris Holubner is ecstatic about coaching the first-ever VHS volleyball team. Coach Holhubner described his experience with the team as “very challenging and rewarding.” The Lady Eagles volleyball team started late last spring with practices and open-gyms to get ready for the coming fall season. All high school girls, including incoming freshman, were encouraged to come and tryout for the new sport. In June, the team traveled to Herrin to compete against surrounding area schools. Having this practice early on prepared the girls for the competition when the season started. Though the team is young and inexperienced, Coach Holhubner has a bright outlook for winning championships. “Maybe in a few years we can be Conference champs, but right now we are all learning,” he stated. With the help of assistant coach Izetta Wiggs, Coach Holubner and the Lady Eagles plan to have a very successful future. VHS basketball stand-out Brett Thomp-son has verbally committed to Saint LouisUniversity to pursue his education and playcollege basketball. The 7 footer has receiveda full-ride athletic scholarship to play for theBillikens.

Brett was being recruited by many presti-gious schools in addition to SLU, includingPurdue, Notre Dame, University of Illinois,Iowa State, Michigan State, University ofCalifornia at Berkley, and many others.

Brett toured the SLU campus severaltimes before making his final decision. “I likehow the campus is set up all the classes andapartments are in close proximity of eachother, the scenery is magnificent: There is awater fountain in the middle of campus thateveryone gathers around to study and chat witheach other.” He also likes it because it’s closeenough for his loved ones to come watch himplay, but it’s far enough that he’s out of South-ern Illinois.

The SLU coaches, Rick Majerus and Por-ter Moser, also weighed heavily into Brett’scollege pick. These coaches have been verysuccessful in helping advance their collegeplayers into the NBA.

Brett plans to major in Health Mainte-nance Information at SLU.

The National signing date is November,14 and Brett will offically sign sometime af-ter that. The SLU coach, Rick Majerus hassent 15 previous athletes to the NBA.
