To start with, we conducted a poll among peers, parents and teachers and we focused mainly on two generations: the students’ and the parents’, being the first group of respondents aged 14 to 20 and the second aged 40 and plus. Both groups included male and female respondents;

The poll asked about people’s favourite dishes, desserts, drinks and other eating habits, and the respondents could give as many free answers as they liked.

This pre-inquiry aimed at finding a set of close answers we would use in our final inquiry. The final inquiry was edited online to be submitted by a sample of 50 female and 50 male, on the 2 age groups. But it turned out to be answered online by more than 150 respondents!

The bar chart shows the most chosen dishes by the 2 age groups. The blue bars refer to the age group 14 to 20 and the red bars to the age group 40 and +. On the left side of the graphic, you can see the names of all dishes; What is clear is the divergence between the dishes chosen by the 2 age groups. Take for instance the 3 most chosen dishes: - Lasanha, strogonoff and pizza are the most chosen dishes by age group 14 to 20; - Roast octopus with olive oil and garlic (Polvo à lagareiro), grilled fish (peixe grelhado) and Portuguese stew with boiled meat and vegetables (Cozido à Portuguesa) were the most chosen dishes by age group 40 and +;

The pie chart shows the percentage of each chosen dish in age group 14 to 20. Apart from the beef, chips and eggs – the so-called “Bitoque” in Portuguese – all other chosen dishes are far from being typical Portuguese food.

The pie chart gives clear evidence of the percentage of each dish in the age group 40 and +. Roast octopus with olive oil and garlic, grilled fish, Portuguese stew with boiled meat and vegetables, grilled sardines (sardinhas assadas) and seafood panada (Açorda de marisco). These rates show that this older generation still appreciates home cooked food, with fish being one of the major ingredients. Bearing this data in mind, we can conclude the following:

Curiously enough, fruit was also the most chosen dessert in age group 40 and + , followed by chocolate mousse, almond tart , Crème brûlée (milk custard) and roast apple.

Concerning drinks accompanying meals, water was the major choice for both age groups and soup was said to be regularly taken by both young people and adults, especially females. Transição In the meantime, if we were asked to name one or two dishes that are representative of our national diet, we would be in trouble at first sight. Both age groups have completely distinct tastes in what concerns food, so it would be difficult to find a straight answer.

If we sum all the dishes containing codfish, we’ll see that in both age groups the three dishes Codfish “à Brás”, codfish with cream and roast codfish sum up 126 respondents, outnumbering the previous dishes referred to as the most chosen ones. So, we’ll choose Codfish “à Brás” to illustrate a typical Portuguese dish, and we will show the process of cooking it, the ingredients and the recipe in a home made video we prepared for you. Regarding the most chosen dessert, fruit is not the best example to illustrate a typical Portuguese sweet, so we’ll show the rather appreciate sweet rice we cooked for you! Hope you like our video!
