Dear Trinity;

Spring is here and it is a season of change. In recent days we have gone from snow to 80

degree weather and have seen most everything in between. While it is easy to dismiss such

things and simply say, “This is Ohio,” the truth is that there is an important lesson about times

of change wrapped up in them. Change is often difficult and sometimes disruptive, yet it is

what brings us into the brilliance of summer and the harvest that follows. Until then it is a time

to work. There is pruning to be done, sticks to be picked up from the lawn, gutters to clean,

yards to mow, mulch to be put down. The work often seems daunting but it is the faithful

work that must be done to reap the harvest of growth and beauty that lies on the other side.

Spring is upon us not only outside of the church, but within. There are many changes

headed our way, and much work to be done. We said goodbye to the organ for a time, so

that it can be refurbished, as it needs to be every 25 years or so, but we are also taking this

opportunity to make repairs and improvements that will bless not only us but the generations

who will worship here even after everyone reading this is gone to be with the Lord. It is a

springtime moment for sure, it will be tumultuous at times, but it will be an incredible blessing

when everything is once again as it should be.

We continue our search for an associate pastor. It has been a long road walked faithfully by

our call committee as they seek to discern God’s will for the congregation. It is also at times

tumultuous and yet we know that God will bless us and things will once again be as they

should be.

We are working on how to get back to normal as it seems the pandemic is winding down.

But there is much to do, and many questions to ask. How do we move forward in unity and

love? What will valuable in-person ministries like Vacation Bible School look like, will we have

the help we need, and will the kids come to be blessed? For over a year now things have been

tumultuous, but we are confident that things will soon once again be as they should be.

There are many more amazing things taking shape at Trinity and wonderful opportunities

just beyond the horizon. It is a busy time to be sure and together we are doing the work. But

this work is springtime work; it is the pruning and care that leads to the growth that God

desires. It can be tumultuous and at times uncomfortable, but a harvest of growth and beauty

lies on the other side. I can honestly say that I have never seen a time in the life of a church

filled with more possibility, more opportunity, and more filled with the powerful working of

the Holy Spirit than the moment we are living together right now. It is hard, but it is also

amazing!

We will be walking this path together and I pray you do not lose heart for a moment when

things are disrupted or challenging, because this is the beginning of some amazing things

God is doing here at Trinity. Now is the pruning, now is the work, but

tomorrow the growth and the next day the harvest! I am eternally grateful to

be sharing in this moment with you!

May the Lord strengthen you and fill you with his grace,

Pastor Kevin McClain

COUNCIL NEWS April, 2021

The April 13, 2021 meeting of Church Council was called to order by Pastor McClain and opened with prayer.

Pastor McClain reported there are 3 candidates for the summer internships as approved at last month ’s

meeting and they are looking for a fourth candidate. They will advertise at AU. He noted the United Way, YMCA,

and Ashland Special Needs Ministry have all expressed thankfulness for being helped with their deficits through

the Clark gift tithe. Trinity’s Beacon After School director is leaving at the end of the school year, so a replacement

is being sought.

Pastor Koch rejoiced in the fact he will soon be able to go back into the nursing homes and care facilities

for visits.

Council will continue with an annual donation of $4,000 in honor of Maxine Rybolt to the Ashland Symphony

Orchestra for the Pops in the Park Concert. The concert was canceled last year due to COVID 19 but is scheduled

to be held this year.

Adam Kime reported for the Christian Education Committee that summer Sunday school is moving

forward as well as the summer VBS program. For the call committee, he noted they will further interview a

pastoral candidate on Friday with a tour, lunch, and dinner.

Council approved a proposal submitted by Kenny Oberholtzer of the Finance Committee on how to further

tithe the remainder of money targeted from the Clark Bequest. The proposal recommends inviting Trinity’s

ministry partners to submit applications for new capital projects as a one-time grant. After the projects are

approved by the Church Council, they will be sent to the congregation for a vote. This will work similar to the

Outreach vote process held each year in November.

Laurie Maurer reported for the Grounds Committee that several wonderful volunteers have agreed to

help around the grounds and that the mowing company will add new mulch to touch things up.

Stephanie Bragg noted for the Kitchen and Women & Children ’s Ministry Committees that 160 meals were

served last Thursday. Thank you to the kitchen staff and volunteers for all the help and support!

Joe McFrederick reported for the Council Nominating Committee that the following people have

accepted the nomination and agreed to have their names placed on the ballot for council election; Angela Baker,

David Morr, Stewart Myers, Sara Paddags, Lee Perry, and Becky Schaaf.

Council approved an Interior and Exterior LED upgrade for most of the lighting around the church. The

recommendation for the upgrades comes from Chad Emmons, Scott Murray, and Larry Franks of the Property

Committee. The committee spent months evaluating proposals. The cost for the turnkey solution is up to

$130,000 which will pay for itself in 5 years or so and substantially cut energy and maintenance costs. It will be

paid for from the Clark bequest. Also, approved was an expense of $12,000 for parts to repair the playground

equipment with money to come from the Rybolt Property Fund.

After much discussion and review of a 19-page proposal from the Worship and Music Committee and the

Schantz Organ Company, Council approved a major upgrade/renovation to the sanctuary organ. The renovation

should be completed by late fall and will cost $882,106 with money to be paid from the Clark bequest.

Scott Murray reported for the Athletic Committee they will sponsor the Church Golf League with a donation of

$120.

Scott Rivenburgh of the Youth Committee noted there are nine students who will be confirmed on

Sunday, May 16, during a closed service to be live streamed. On Saturday, May 22, at 8:00 AM there will be a 6K

Walk for Water fundraiser through World Vision at Freer Field. A Trinity high school student, Lexi Pool will

spearhead the event, all are welcome to participate.

Pam Bradley reported for the Montessori Preschool that they have 3 new students and 7 requests for

scholarships for next year.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer led by Pastor McClain.

The Worship and Music Committee and a few other organist guests recently spent two months reviewing proposals to renovate our sanctuary organ proposed by the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio, who have been expanding and servicing our pipe organ for ninety-one years. After working through the possibilities the committee voted unanimously in favor of a plan of renovations, listed below, with the money to come from the bequest of Jim and Suzy Clark.

The Clark family have been members and supporters of Trinity going back many generations. They have been especially strong supporters of music, with members of the family giving toward the last refurbishing of the organ in the 1980s. Though Jim and Suzy moved to California many years ago they still kept connected to us, visiting often and remaining connected to the Ashland community. A decade ago they presented Trinity with the family’s Steinway baby grand piano, which is now used on the Jack’s Place stage.

The role of the organ in Lutheran worship is to lead the singing of the congregation, support the liturgy, accompany choirs and musicians, and be able to present uplifting and appropriate selections of its own. Our organ has not had major work done to it since 1983. We feel privileged to now have both the opportunity and the means to bring it up to date and prepare it for the future.

One can compare a pipe organ to an old farmhouse, in that it is a custom built structure, mostly made of wood and metal with electric wiring, and is often added to and rebuilt over the years. The original portion of Trinity’s pipe organ was built by the M. P. Moeller Organ Company of Hagerstown, Maryland, in business from 1875 to 1993. Our organ was built in 1909 as their Opus 924, that is, the 924th organ they built.

It was rebuilt in 1933 by the Schantz Organ Company as the Myers Memorial Organ, given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Myers by their three children, Mary, Helen and John C. [It is Mary’s reconditioned Steinway piano which sits in the sanctuary.] It was then fitted into the new organ chamber when our congregation moved to Center Street in 1963.

In 1983 additional stops were added to fill out the sound of the organ and add different tone colors. The lead gift for that renovation was given by Marjorie Clark Ingmand, Jim Clark’s aunt.

2021 renovations to our organ will include a complete redo of the internal electrical systems and connections, improved tonal egress, addressing temperature problems in the organ chamber, a revised tonal design, replacing the organ grille cloth, and incorporating the balcony organ pipes into the main organ console.

Without getting too technical, in practical everyday terms, that means the electrical system will move from the knob and tube wiring era to the digital age, the sound will not be trapped in a separate chamber but will resonate more freely in the worship space, the extremes of temperature which affect the tuning of the pipes will be controlled (we even had a lead pipe melt in the extreme heat a few years ago!), the organ will sound fuller and richer and be more effective at leading singing, the dust and grime-laden grille clothe will once again be a light, not dark, backdrop to the altar area with an added rank of visible pipes to frame the hanging cross over the altar (see the artist’s conception illustration), and organist Mark Koehler will not have to run to the balcony to play the pipes located there.

With a projected timeline of five to seven months to complete the organ renovations, the committee was anxious that work begin immediately after Easter so we can be ready for Christmas, if not the late fall festivals of Reformation, All Saints, and Thanksgiving.

Pipe removal began on April 27, while the entire set of wind chests will be relocated to the company’s workshop in Orrville in May. We will use the balcony organ and piano for singing thru the summer. The reredos – the wall behind the altar – will remain until it is replaced in late summer / early fall.

Council members Stephanie Bragg, Stacey Hendrix, Marsha McNutt, Scott Murray, and Bill Smith participated in the meetings and can give more insight on the discussions. Ron Marenchin can share copies of the several presentations, including other slides not included here for brevity, and can answer questions as well.

This is a once in a lifetime process. We are grateful to be undertaking it, and we will be extremely pleased when it is finished. “Sola Deo Gloria” - “To God alone be the glory.”

What does Alpha look like? Alpha has three key components: food, a talk, and good conversation.

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. Join us now through June 23, each session looks at a different question that people can have about faith and is designed to create conversation. It’s just an open, informal, and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together.

Join us and invite someone who may have questions about life and faith - Awesome dinner served beginning at , incredible talk at 6:00, amazing

conversation at 6:30 – out the door by 7:00 – what do you have to lose? Join us in the Trinity Room – Lower Level. For food planning purposes, give Michelle Vanderzyden a call or email at the church to let her know you plan to attend. 419-289-2126 or [email protected]

Food—5:30 PM

Our session will begin with dinner at 5:30, because it’s a great way to build community and get to know each other.

Talk—6:00 PM

The video talks are designed to engage guests and inspire conversation. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can I have faith?

Discussion—6:30 PM

Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say (seriously). It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.

Our Studies Each year, Bible Study Fellowship groups focus on a different book or section of the Bible over 30 weekly sessions. Going chapter by chapter, verse by verse, allows members to better understand the text and gain a more thorough knowledge of, and relationship with, its Author — Almighty God. BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) is for women, men and children and offers in-person and online classes. Currently Ashland will be offering an in person class for the 2021-2022 year beginning in September and hosted at Trinity Lutheran Church. To find out more about BSF check out their website at www.bsfinternational.org or contact Michelle Vanderzyden, 419-289-2126, [email protected].

In each newsletter, we are taking the time and space to highlight our high school

seniors graduating this spring. This month we recognize two of our seniors, Bryn

Grabowski, of Hillsdale High School, and Triton Schuster, of Ashland High School.

What service does your family normally attend? Before the Covid pandemic, my family and I would attend

the 8:30 Sanctuary Service.

What kinds of things are you involved in at Trinity? Currently, I am not involved in anything at Trinity.

What is your favorite bible verse? My favorite Bible verse is 2 Timothy 4:17, “But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength.”

What do you like to do outside of the church in your spare time? In my spare time, I play softball, watch Tik-Tok, hang out with my friends and boyfriend.

What role does your faith have in your everyday life? My faith guides me through my decisions and actions in my everyday life.

What are you thankful for? I am thankful for my family and friends.

What are your plans after graduation? My plans after graduation are to attend Otterbein University where I will be studying Exercise Science and I will be playing softball.

What is something unique about yourself that would surprise others? Something unique about myself is that my favorite color is orange.

Join us for our first Global 6k Water Walk, put on through the World Vision organization, and led by one of our own high school students, Lexi Pool. Walk, jog, or run your way through the morning (a total of about 4 miles) in support for those who do the same for their daily water in poorer countries. If you would like to know more about the organization, or would like to sign up, check out www.teamworldvision.org and click on the “6k for water” tab, or reach out to Lexi and Kim Pool or Darrik Sheek. We look forward to walking alongside you!

The funds will go to helping those communities needing easier access to clean water. The goal is to raise $2500 in funding; currently $985 has been received. If you wish to donate but prefer not to participate, you can make a donation by visiting teamworldvision.org, click on the donate button, and choose Ashland Trinity Youth. You can also make a donation by cash or check (made out to Trinity Youth) and give to Darrik Sheek.

What service does your family normally attend? My family and I usually attend the 10:45 Sanctuary Service.

What kinds of things are you involved in at Trinity? I’ve been involved in Vacation Bible School and various youth activities.

What is your favorite bible verse? Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” It gives me comfort knowing that no matter what I go through, the Word of the Lord hasn’t changed and neither has Jesus.

What do you like to do outside of the church in your spare time? I’m involved in school sports and clubs. Specifically, the varsity football, varsity swim and varsity track teams. I am in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, French Honor Society and I am also the President of the Student Council.

What role does your faith have in your everyday life? Every morning I wake up and thank God for my family and the life I have been blessed with. I go throughout my day doing everything I can to be the best follower of Christ and Christian I can be. Faith is what guides me in my days. When I’m struggling or striving, I turn to God for guidance.

What are you thankful for? I’m most thankful for my family and the life I have lived. I’ve been blessed with the most loving and caring family. I’ve been blessed with a life that allows me to help others and be happy.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on attending Ohio Northern University and continuing my athletic career as a football player. I will be studying Computer Engineering and Entrepreneurship.

What is something unique about yourself that would surprise others? It may be childish, but I still collect hot wheels to this day.

It was really hard not having children in the building last year—we really missed the smiles and laughter and singing that normally fill the hallways all week! and we are so excited to plan this year for you. Gemilla Szabo, Angela Baker, and Melissa See are hard at work, making sure everything is safe and happy for all the kids and adults. We are looking forward to —where kids discover God’s greatest treasure isn’t diamonds, gems, or gold—it’s them! Kids and adults will share a time full of faith discoveries, memorable music, and epic adventures that help kids encounter God’s amazing love for them!

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW - THINGS ARE A BIT DIFFERENT THIS YEAR!

(Yes, that is only 4 days. We will pack in 5 days of fun into 4!)

(Yes, that’s a little shorter than last year. We have changed our schedule to allow for safety this year)

Discovering You’re Priceless to God

PRAY! There will be many children here that week—some of whom may not have heard the Gospel

message. Pray that their hearts are open to the love of Christ!

HELP US STAFF VBS—Currently we have enough crew leaders to lead 55 children. We could use more

people to lead children to their activities, and a few more people to man the stations that kids attend.

Contact one of our directors if you are interested in shaping the spiritual life of a young child! Contact

Gemilla Szabo, 567-203-8789, Angela Baker, 567-203-8434, Melissa See, 567-203-7321, or Dawn Forbes,

567-203-2618. We need YOU for the gifts that you are willing to share with our children. Plus, you’ll have

a great time and a deep joy knowing you furthered the kingdom of God by impacting our children. We

will give you all the tools you need—just bring your happy heart!

SPONSOR A CHILD FOR VBS—Sponsoring a child for VBS makes sure our kids get the enrichment items from our

curriculum without having to charge families to attend. It costs $10 to sponsor a child, and any amount is

appreciated. Please contact Dawn Forbes for more info if you are willing to donate to this worthy cause. In the

past we have ministered to nearly 300 children at no cost to their family!

SNACK HELP NEEDED—In keeping with our Treasured theme, we will have snacks that reinforce the stories of

each day. That’s where we need your help. We will be putting a sign-up list online, beginning May 1, for you to sign

up for specific items needed for the snack. If you would prefer to help financially, please contact Dawn Forbes.

We want to have enough adult help for small crews this year, and we need to know if your child is coming by June 13. Please register your child, age 4 (and potty-trained) through grade 4 online at https://vbspro.events/p/events/trinityashland. For those without computer access, you can register in the Church Office or by contacting Dawn Forbes at [email protected]

We are planning a fabulous outdoor party to celebrate VBS on Thursday night, June 24, at 6:00 p.m. We’ll eat together and sing together—all in the parking lot—where we’ll celebrate all that the kids have learned during VBS 2021. More info will be in later announcements and the June newsletter. Stay tuned! You won’t want to miss it!

We are pleased with the progress the children have made this year. Each child has achieved so much. The children are such a delight and are so joyful. We are looking forward to next year. If you know of someone interested in attending preschool, please tell them about our school. We have so much to offer. Contact email: [email protected]. The state has lifted the restrictions for the pandemic ratio of only 9 children per session. We are now allowed to have more children attend at a time. We are happy to have had three more children join us in April.

A spiritual lesson on the resurrection with Arabella.

Carsyn’s first day.

Selah plays the bells in music class.

Our school is very hands-on. Children learn best when their hands are busy doing work. The children enjoyed our unit on flowers. They learned the parts of a flower by using lilies. They made their own book. Flower puzzles and books were available.

It has been a fun and eventful month at Beacon! The week before spring break was filled with Easter celebrations. We enjoyed Easter-themed snacks and games, read the Easter story together, and had a blast during our Easter egg hunt! Our students loved searching for eggs on the playground and showed such kindness as they helped their friends find eggs too.

This month, our students also created their own acrostic poems using their names. They used the letters in their name to think of some of their positive character traits and unique qualities that begin with those letters. It was fun to see what they created!

During devotion time, we learned about the Fruits of the Spirit and how we can see examples of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in our own everyday lives.

We are excited for more learning and fun during these last few weeks of the school year!

Blessings,

Jocelyn Dickerson Beacon Director
