In 1967 it was all happening. Elvis and Priscilla Presley were married, All You Need is Love reached number 1 in the singles chart, and Milton Keynes was born. It’s been 50 years since the plans for Milton Keynes turned from blue prints to bricks, and how far the new city has come in just five decades! Congratulations to you all for being a part of making our city what we know and love today. This deserves a celebration, so we’re asking all the residents and communities of Milton Keynes to come together for a city-wide 1960s party on 23 – 25 June weekend (exactly six months after we celebrated our actual birthday)! Besides, who needs an excuse to relive the swinging sixties? This party pack aims to help you plan your very own 60s party this June, covering music, food, decorations, invitations and fancy dress. Getting Started

Planning your party

The first thing to consider is where to have your party. You can hold it at home, throw a street party, a party in the park, or hire out your local community centre.

For detailed information on planning an event and to find out about licenses, permissions, street closures etc. please see our MK50 Events Toolkit: http://www.mk50.co.uk/get-involved/resources

To find a local venue near you search our facilities list here: www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/leisure-tourism-and-culture/leisure-and-community-facilities/community-centres

Other venues across Milton Keynes will be getting involved as well, so if you would rather join a local party, then visit www.MK50.co.uk /whats- on to find one happening near you.

Register your party

So that we can understand the extent to which people are getting involved in our celebrations and to get listed on the website, we would like to know when and where you’re holding your party. Please register your event by emailing the date, time and location of your party to [email protected]. Then we will be able to provide you with some freebies, such as MK50 balloons and flags to enhance your event.

If you want to advertise your party across the city, you can add it to the What’s On section of our website at http://www.mk50.co.uk/get-involved/add-your-event or we can shout about it on our social media pages, Twitter and Facebook - @CultureMK.

Share your snaps

We know it’s the 60s, but long gone are the days of film cameras. If you’re snapping away during your 60s party make sure to share them on social media by using #MK50.

Music Playlist

The 60s were a ground-breaking decade for music. The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were everywhere and the one-hit wonders came but never left. For a party game idea, why not quiz your guests on what year the track was released.

Dressing Up

The 60s fashion was something completely new. The uptight 50s had broken out of its shell to the vibrant, colourful and fun-loving 60s. Skirts and dresses were shorter, Go Go boots were in fashion, men grew their hair and beards, jeans flared and the brighter the fabric, the better.

Here’s some inspiration for your own costume:

Decoration and ideas

The 60s were all about colour and they weren’t afraid of patterns. Forget about the neutral tones of today and embrace the rainbow and all the shades of brown, yellow and orange as you turn your party into a 60s time capsule.

MK50 balloons and flags – register your party with us and we might be able to send you some red MK50 balloons and flags.
