A Message from the President
W e’ve closed out another great quarter as a chapter. Your
chapter leaders are fully engaged in our communications
and operational plan. Our summer membership drive was a
huge success, bringing in 10 new members. In August, our membership
also elected our chapter leaders for the 2016 year. Please offer your
congratulations to our 2016 chapter leaders! In October, these leaders will
travel to Alexandria, VA to learn from the best chapter leaders in ATD.
The tips and tricks they learn, combined with your feedback, help your
leaders plan for the coming year.
Our chapter in partnership with the ATD NOLA chapter are preparing for
The Louisiana Talent Development Conference to be held on
September 25 at L’Auberge Casino and Hotel in Baton Rouge. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to register as
this is an event you do not want to miss! Andrew Jefferson of The 6 Ds Company will be our keynote speaker. We
also have excellent speakers for both the leadership development and training facilitation track. We hope to see
you there!
Don’t expect things to slow down as we enter the last quarter of this year. We have three great monthly programs
to offer – plus an additional webinar and a new member orientation session! Also, don’t forget that Employee
Learning Week is the first week of December. ATD encourages everyone’s participation as we celebrate workplace
learning and performance. Let us know how you choose to celebrate and get recognized as a Champion of
Learning! We’ll have special activities and monthly program planned to round out the year. We still have lots of
excitement on the way this year.
Let us know how we are doing. Reach out to me at [email protected].
Thanks, Damona D. Barnes, PHR, SHRM-CP 2015 President, ATD Baton Rouge Chapter [email protected]

What brought you to the field of
Training and Development?
Training and Development was not
the direction I thought I was headed
in when I first started in banking. I
was what was considered an ‘on
the job’ trainer in the branches. I
loved coaching and mentoring the
new employees. It’s a great feeling
when you see the light bulb turn on
because they now understand...it’s
all coming together. I love seeing
that look on someone’s face! My
hard work paid off because I was
offered a position in the new Retail
Education Department a year later.
How long have you been involved
in Training & Development?
I have been involved in Training &
Development since 1998. The
majority of my time has been spent
in the financial industry, both with
banks and credit unions.
What are your particular
strengths that makes this a good
fit for you?
I am comfortable speaking with all
levels of employees. Because my
department is within HR we are
strictly here for the employee
regardless of your level. By taking this
approach it has helped me address
each person as an individual and not a
title. Don’t be mistaken, I still know
who the ‘important people’ are. I also
keep in mind that my job is to make
someone’s job easier. When you take
on this perspective, employees look at
you as someone who is helpful and
here to teach them.
How long have you been a member
of ATDBR and how have you
benefited from being an ATDBR
Member?
I have been a member of ATDBR for
three years and a national member for
over seven years. The resources that
are available both on a local and
national level are rewarding. I’ve
enjoyed meeting local ATD
professionals in the different
industries.
What is your vision for yourself as a
workforce development
professional?
My vision is to use the latest
technologies that are available in the
Talent Development arena. Also the
material that is used for learning is
easy to digest, effective and presented
in a manner that all learners can
understand. The compliance
requirements in the financial industry
is constantly changing so it’s
important that my department
educates the staff effectively.
What is your vision for your
participation in ATBR?
My vision is to grow the number of
ATD BR members. We can all learn
so much from each other.
If you could have any well-known
figure (deceased or alive) mentor
you, who would it be and what
would you hope to gain?
I guess my choice would be John
Maxwell. I look for leaders who
inspire others to do well. They make
decisions for the right reasons and
not always for a business purpose.

What is Employee Learning Week? Employee Learning Week is an awareness campaign highlighting the important connection between learning and achieving organizational results.
When is it? Employee learning is a year round event, but Employee Learning Week will be held December 7—11
Where is it? Employee Learning Week events can happen anywhere! Hold events in your office or plan a special off-site program.
Why participate? Training is more important now than ever before. The growing skills gap and increased need to compete in today's economy require organizations to develop a knowledgeable and highly skilled workforce.
Who can participate? All organizations are encouraged to recognize Employee Learning Week by
rededicating themselves to employee learning.
Employee Learning Week is December 7—11

ATD Chapter Incentive Program
Did you know ? Every purchase you make from ATD can potentially help the Baton Rouge chapter? ATD offers chapters an incentive program, called ChIP, that gives a percentage of all purchases made using the chapter’s ChIP code to the chapter. This allows us to invest in you, our members.
Our chapter ChIP code is CH7121. Mention this code on any purchases, including memberships, conference registrations, book purchases, or other purchases made through ATD National.
