Handwriting Hassles with Intermediate Writers

This hands-on, interactive workshop designed for second, third, and fourth grade teachers will focus on answers to questions such as: What can I do about poor handwriting when bad habits have already been established? How can I help students become efficient writers, when they can’t even hold their pencil correctly? What’s the best way to help kids transition between print and cursive writing? How much should I push cursive writing in daily work? Participants will learn ways to teach handwriting all through the day in the midst of a packed instructional schedule. Teachers will learn to do simple handwriting checks in order to figure out what’s hindering a student’s handwriting progress. Fun easy strategies to improve trunk stability, motor memory, pencil grip and visual-perceptual skills will be explored.

In this session, participants will learn eight essential factors that ensure a successful SSR approach. Participants will come away with an understanding of what SSR is, why it’s important, and how to implement it in their classrooms. The session will feature lots of resources, book lists, motivational tips, and lower level reading suggestions for upper grade readers. Great literature to share with students will be highlighted. Participants should plan to bring three books to share that are popular choices with their students.

Spring Cleaning

After years of writing emails, creating work sheets, memos, letters and tests, most of us have quite a few (or maybe even a long list!) of items that are not organized or filed. Just as most of us don’t like having a big stack of papers on our desk, we should not have a big stack of documents all in a single folder. In this workshop, you will learn how to create folders and have the chance to file your documents. Organizing email cabinets and archiving files will be another focus of this practical, hands-on workshop.

Prerequisite Skills: Open only to individuals who have not attended prior sessions, although teachers are welcome but no pay or Act 48 credits will be given for participation in this workshop.

Technology Integrators

Last year, SWSD began a new program called Tech Integrators. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for teachers to work collaboratively over the summer on developing technology infused lesson plans that focus on student achievement. The program is held for four days each summer and then the "integrators" come together one day each marking period of the following school year to attend follow up activities, i.e. guest speakers, training sessions, sharing, etc. It is pretty painless and a fun opportunity to develop that great lesson idea we never have time for. While SWSD is already full of integrators, we can never be content with the status quo. We can always add a little more to our bag of tricks. Please contact your building level technology coordinator for more information on this program.

Turning Point

As a teacher, you will instantly collect valuable data on your students and it’s easy to learn because the software is integrated within PowerPoint! Come find out how to set up the "clickers" to work with your computer and create a few PowerPoint quizzes for your class. Bring a few curriculum materials and/or existing PowerPoint files.

Unitedstreaming

Refresh your memory at this Unitedstreaming workshop or come to try some more advanced ways to use Unitedstreaming! The morning will consist of an overview of navigating through the resources available in this software. Search by topic, grade level, media type and more to pinpoint the exact resources to match your curricular objectives. Review the process for saving the materials for later use in projects and by your students. After finding relevant media resources, participants will pick one or more to identify and develop ways of incorporating it into the classroom, strategies for troubleshooting the things that may go wrong, and finding and modifying the student resources that accompany each video. Come with an open mind and leave with classroom solutions.

Using Moodle as a Technology Integration Tool

Moodle is a free course managing system that allows the teacher to easily set up and manage their class. But it is more than just a fancy webpage in that it allows users to not only read information contained on the site but to add to that information. As such, it is great for facilitating class discussions, cooperative learning and diversifying instruction. This workshop will show the participant what Moodle is and develop ideas on how it can be effectively put to use in their South Western classroom. Participants will be shown how to develop and maintain a Moodle site and ample time will be provided to put what they’ve learned into practice to begin to set up their own class site for use in the fall.
