QUIZMatch the monuments to their descriptions. How many can you match?

1 Abd al Rahman III built this huge palace-city around the year 940 and named it after his favourite wife.

2 This monument is the work of the architect Modesto López and the sculptor Aniceto Marinas. It is in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Spain’s first constitution.

3 This is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third largest church in the world. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Almohad mosque stood there, but in 1402, people started building the cathedral on the base of the old mosque. It took more than 100 years to build. UNESCO made it a World Heritage Site in 1987.

4 Abd al Rahman III began building this fortress in 955. Originally, there were 24 towers. It stands on the highest part of a hill, and you can see it from anywhere in the city below.

5 Christopher Columbus stayed here for a year before his famous voyage to the New World. There are murals, a museum about his life and the small church he prayed in before his voyage.

6 This 100-metre-deep canyon divides the old and new parts of Ronda. In the 18th century, people here built the “New Bridge” over the canyon.

7 The King wanted a palace inside the Alhambra and he asked Pedro Machuca, a student of Michelangelo, to design it. The King started construction in 1533, but he never finished it.

8 Its Palace of Chains and other beautiful buildings are some of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in Spain. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.

he Amazing Alhambra Visit the Alhambra for an interesting day out in an amazing place!

The Alhambra is a magnificent palace and fortress on a hill above Granada. Why the name “Alhambra”? Because the Moors built it out of a special red clay, and “Alhambra” means “the red one” in Arabic.

The Alhambra is at least 700 years old. Over the centuries, different groups of people lived there and added some of their own style. So, in the Alhambra complex today, you can see Islamic architecture, Christian decoration and even a Roman palace!

There’s a lot of artwork in the Alhambra. It’s got coloured windows and many beautiful mosaics. The gardens are amazing too – with flowers, trees and fish ponds. The “Court of Lions” is especially impressive. It’s got 124 tall, white marble columns and a water fountain in the middle. Around the fountain are 12 white marble lions.

There’s one other thing to see in the Alhambra … ghosts! According to legend, the Alhambra is very beautiful and people don’t want to leave it when they die. So, instead of going to Heaven, they stay in the Alhambra as ghosts!

Last week, my parents and I travelled to Guadix, a small town 40 minutes from Granada. It’s a special place because many people there live in caves. These cave houses are not natural but man-made.

We arrived at 7 pm and drove past many cave houses with white chimneys. The chimneys are important because they allow fresh air into the house. The cave houses are all very different. Some are small mud houses, others are similar to palaces.

We wanted to stay in a cave house, so we asked a woman on the street for some information. She showed us her cave house and gave us brochures of caves for rent. We chose one and rented it for a night.

It was exciting to spend the night inside a cave. It was very comfortable. The walls were thick so the cave was cool even though it is the middle of summer. The next day we walked around town and Mum bought some beautiful souvenirs. Guadix is one of my favourite places on our holiday so far …

Wild Animals of Andalusia

Andalusia is home to about 70% of Europe’s wildlife. Meet some of our favourites.

Iberian LynxThe Iberian lynx is one of the world’s most endangered big cats; only about 680 of these animals still live in the wild. This big cat appears at night to hunt rabbits. A lynx must eat one rabbit a day to survive.

Spanish Imperial EagleThe Spanish imperial eagle is one of the three rarest birds of prey in the world. In the 1960s, there were only 30 pairs but thanks to conservationists, today there are more than 400 pairs in the world, including 112 pairs in Andalusia. However, many are still dying because people poison them.

MongooseThis animal with a funny name is a small cat-like mammal with a long tail. The Arabs brought it to the Iberian Peninsula in the 700s to kill rats and snakes. Andalusia is the only place in Europe with mongooses.

Iberian Wolf This wolf is smaller than other European wolves. In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a campaign to kill the Iberian wolves because they were attacking farm animals. However, ecologists are working hard to save this species.

1 Read the article.

The Doñana National Park is one of Europe’s most important nature reserves. The park is at the southern end of the Guadalquivir River, and at more than 1,300 square kilometres, it is the largest park in Spain.

In the past, nobody wanted to live in this wet area but it was ideal for wildlife. In the 13th century, Castilian kings used it for hunting. Then, a duchess called Doña Ana de Silva y Mendoza decided to live there. She didn’t like people, but she loved animals, so it was the perfect place to build a home. Because of her, the region is called the Forest of Doña Ana – or Doñana.

In 1969, the area became a national park. It has got an enormous variety of animals, including many types of deer and the famous Iberian lynx. It has also got over 300 species of birds, including the Spanish imperial eagle. At one time, there were even camels in the park. People aren’t sure how they got there, but they were still there in the 1970s. Today, you won’t see any camels, but you will see different and amazing animals living together in a beautiful, safe environment.

2 Answer the questions.

1. Where is the Doñana National Park?

2. How big is the park?

3. Why didn’t people want to live in this area in the past?

4. Where does the name “Doñana” come from?

5. Which two animals at the Doñana National Park come from Spain?

6. Which animal was in the park in the past but isn’t there today?

Solar and Wind PowerAre you looking for ways to save energy and money? Then try solar and wind power. Andalusia is an ideal area for this because of its geographic location and climate.

Solar powerWith an average of 300 sunny days a year, many Andalusians are installing solar panels in their homes. They are less expensive than other forms of energy, so people are saving money on their electricity and it’s better for the environment too! People often use solar panels to heat water, but some people also use them to heat their houses and swimming pools.

Wind power Wind power is another efficient form of energy. There are a lot of mountains in Andalusia, so people use the strong mountain winds for energy. Andalusians started using wind power centuries ago. Today, there are many wind farms in the region with modern wind turbines to generate power. Not everybody is happy about these wind farms. Many believe they make the landscape very ugly. But if we don’t use more of these natural forms of energy, we will destroy the environment and the beautiful Andalusian landscape.

A Very Special HorseThe Andalusian horse is one of the oldest horses in the world. It first lived on the Iberian Peninsula thousands of years ago. Throughout history, it was a favourite horse of kings and they used these horses in wars. However, it is also a gentle, elegant animal and it learns quickly. That is why the Andalusian horse is popular for sports, rodeos and horse racing in many countries. You can also see this horse in many films such as The Lord of the Rings and Braveheart.

Do you want to see these horses? Well, a popular place to visit is the incredible Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation in Jerez. You can see a spectacular ballet with … dancing horses! The show’s name is “How Andalusian Horses Dance” and you can see it several times during the year. The riders wear colourful 18th-century-style clothes. These expert riders and their horses perform six different dances in perfect harmony to traditional Spanish music. It is a very exciting show. You really must see it to believe it!

Every May or June, more than

a million people participate in a

religious pilgrimage to El Rocio in

Huelva. One of the traditional ways to

get there is on horseback. Horse riding

is very popular in Andalusia, but not

Hi Sue,

Last week, I arrived in Seville, a day before the SEMANA SANTA, or Holy Week of Easter. The local people were busy preparing for this very special event, and I could feel the excitement in the air.

Finally, the day arrived. Many people were waiting in the street or looking out of their windows to see the procession. Then it began. The first man was carrying a cross and behind him, groups of people followed with candles. Everyone was wearing similar costumes and had masks over their faces. Finally, the floats arrived. They were beautiful. People work hard all year to prepare these floats. Most of the floats were of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. The bands in the procession were playing music and the people in the houses were throwing flower petals. It was an incredible experience. I’ll be sad to leave tomorrow.
