They had just delivered the infamous “Little Boy” atomic bomb that would soon fall on Hiroshima, Japan. Following their top-secret voyage from San Francisco to Tinian Island they received their next orders. In the chaos of wartime activity they were unaware they had been sent on a route with enemy submarines. It was midnight as the ship engines droned below deck and the bow cut through the waves. Most men slept and others tiredly kept watch when suddenly a torpedo slammed into the bow and blew the front of the ship off. Moments later a second sliced into the mid-section of the ship devastating every vital organ of the ship. Three hundred sailors and marines died in the explosions and inferno that erupted. Emergency radio dispatches were sent from the doomed ship. In the twelve minutes that followed nine hundred disoriented, bleeding, barely clothed men managed to escape before it slipped below the surface. Those who received the brief distress message were unable to confirm the origin of the call so they dismissed it and no help was dispatched. The injured, hungry and thirsty survivors floated in the South Pacific forgotten. Some wore life jackets and the rest found nets and rafts to cling to as they struggled to stay afloat. They hoped help would come in the morning. Instead of help, hundreds of sharks began to attack. They were condemned to die. The story of these men doomed in the South Pacific is for me a vivid picture of mankind’s condemned condition described in the Scriptures and the incredible act by which the men and women are saved. I believe it paints a portrait of the spiritual state of your life and my life and the lives of those we know. The world is doomed – condemned. Not by anything God has done but what we have done. The ship of the mankind’s own righteousness has sunk. His attempt to be good enough is not good enough. Each one in the world has desperately clung to beliefs and relationships and things and reputations and even hurts and injuries, to stay afloat and survive. But our fate is sealed. These things will slip below the water. We are destined for ruin. Oh what is a man or woman to do? What are you and I to do? Family Tree Appreciation Potluck. We were delightfully surprised this month to be invited back to the Family Tree Apartments for a potluck put on by the residents. Kathy and Darell Wilson coordinated this event which was an appreciation dinner for our involvement and support of the precious families who live there. We were blessed by the love and generosity and sacrifice of those who served us.

Family Camp 2014. On June 27th we returned to Entiat for our annual church retreat at the Entiat Valley Family Camp. It was an extended weekend of play, Bible learning and fellowship. Saturday we spent the day at Lincoln Rock State Park where we rented a ski boat and played on the beach. Sunday we traveled to the Slidewaters Park in Chelan for fun on the water slides. Each evening would begin with dinner followed by family worship and age-graded teaching times. Our study was on the greatest verse in the Bible, John 3:16-17.The evenings concluded with hide and seek in the dark, showers and bedtime with the kids so the adults could meet and play games until late! Camp concluded with a delightful talent show with performances from the kids.

A big thanks to our camp director, Perry Travis, who helped things run seamlessly. Also special thanks to John, Linda and Maureen who came and cooked our meals and kept us well fed.

Baptisms at Camp. Baptism looks like someone is simply being dunked under the water. For followers of Jesus this act of being submerged under the water before the church family symbolizes one’s faith and new life in Jesus Christ. On Sunday night Phoebe Wright, Lily Kirshner, and Joshua Travis shared their faith before the church and were baptized by their parents in the Entiat River.
