    Florence Nightingalewas born in 1820 to wealthyparents while they were on a two year honeymoonin Florence, Italy.

    Life History

    a) Second daughter of wealthy English parents.

    b) Raised in Derbyshire, England

    c) Felt called by God to serve Him on February 7, 1837

    d) Never married; marriage would destroy the chance of her

    serving God's call

    Her parents wanted her to marry a rich man,

    but she wanted to become a nurse. Herparents were opposed to this, as nursing wasconsidered to be a job for poor women.

    Eventually, when Florence was 31, her fathergave her permission to train.

    Two years later she was appointed residentlady superintendent of a hospital for women inHarley Street, London.

    Saint Thomas Hospital in London

    In March 1853 Russia invaded Turkey.England and France were very worried about

    the growing power of Russia, and went toTurkeys aid. The Crimean Peninsular became abattle ground.

    The Crimean War began in 1854.

    It was to last two years.

    Wounded soldiers were transported by

    sea to the hospitals

    Conditions in the army hospital in Scutari were

    appalling. Wounded soldiers lay in their armyuniforms that were "stiff with dirt". They hadno blankets to cover them, and nothing healthyto eat.

    Diseases such as typhoid, cholera anddysentery were the main reasons why so many

    soldiers lost their lives.

    She was appalled and horrified with

    what she saw

    Wards were crowded, dirty, poorly

    ventilated, with filth and vermin and no

    water or sanitary facilities

    Food was poorly cooked and served at

    long intervals

    Soldiers lay on straw mats. The floorwas covered with dirt and blood. The

    men still wore their blood soaked

    uniforms.

    They reached the Barracks Hospital at Scutari which

    had 1500 patients

    Through her tireless efforts the mortality rate among the sick and

    the wounded was greatly reduced (from 42% to 2%)

    56 nurses shared one room includingeating and sleeping. They -

    Scrubbed and cleaned, improveddrainage

    Procured soaps, towels and clothing

    Opened diet kitchens, made good food

    Visited the sick and wrote letters forthem

    Set up laundries, reading rooms and postoffices for them

    Florences nurses were the first to wear

    proper uniforms. They kept the hospitals

    clean and tidy.

    Here, by insisting on order,cleanliness and hygiene shewas able to dramatically

    reduce the death-rate of herpatients.

    In 1856 Florence Nightingale returned toEngland as a national heroine.

    She had been deeply shocked by the lack oforganisation, hygiene and elementary care

    that wounded men received from the BritishArmy.

    She began a campaign to improve the quality

    of nursing in military hospitals.

    Once back in London after the

    war, she founded the NightingaleSchool and Home for Nurses usingmoney donated in tribute to herservices.

    The school marked the beginningof professional education in thenursing field.

    Her bookNotes on hospitals andNotes on Nursingbecame the firstdefinitive textbook for the field.
