Methods and Results
Dr. William LesterMaster Gardener Leadership School

Definitions
• Traditional Course• Most (or all) instruction given in person, may be 1 full day/week
• Online Course• Students and instructor never meet
• Hybrid Online• Integrate components of online course (extra videos, assignments, webinars,
etc.)
• Flipped Classroom• Instruction that was covered in-person is done at home, hands-on activities
and bonding is done in-person
Common Objections to Non-traditional Training
• The technology is too confusing
• All you will attract is working people who cannot help with volunteer programs
• Too little interaction- not enough ‘bonding’
• Learning from recorded videos doesn’t give you the chance to ask questions
Why Change?
• Needs assessment
• Enrollment was dropping (last traditional class was 9 students- 6 finished)
• Several MG’s stated they would have joined years earlier
• If a student missed a class they would miss the information
• Technology offers the opportunity for a wider range of speakers
What We Did…
Created a Flipped Classroom Training Course
• University of Florida Canvas platform
• Lectures are turned into recorded power points
• 10 modules (11 week course)
• In-person meeting from 6-9PM once a week
• Students can view all open modules and complete course work during the week
Flipped Classroom Training Course
• First class (Sep.–Nov. 2017) 12 trainees
• Second class (Feb.-April 2018) 16 trainees out of 20 applications
• Everyone completed the course
• Evening session was all hands-on:• Soil pudding
• Weed identification
• FFL Jeopardy, Plant Pathology game
• Plant propagation at our nursery

What Was The Best Thing About Your Course?
• Hands on training
• Being on line
• Instructor (3 times!)
• My classmates
• The amount of information I was able to learn and retain
• Knowledge gained
Common Objections
• The technology is too confusing- The few issues with technology were all easy to work out
• All you will attract is working people who cannot help with volunteer programs- Exactly 50% of students could have taken the traditional course
• Too little interaction- not enough ‘bonding’- Between evening sessions and on-line discussions everyone ‘bonded’
• Learning from recorded videos doesn’t give you the chance to ask questions- Plenty of opportunities between evening sessions, e-mail, discussions, etc.
Conclusions (So Far…)
• Society is changing very quickly- communications, education, entertainment, etc.
• Flipped classroom or on-line training is an educational delivery method
• Master Gardener program becomes accessible to more of the community (teachers, health care, individuals close to retirement)
• Quizzes are self grading!!
• This technology can be adapted in many different ways……………..
