Dear HTUF Attendees:

Ten years ago when the Army andCALSTART founded HTUF, fewpeople foresaw what is before us thisweek — hybrid vehicles and tech-nologies with sales numbering2000-plus trucks and growing. Mil-itary bases this year will start de-ploying commercial hybrids for theirnon-tactical uses. And, a new incentive program spurred sales ofmore than 650 new trucks this yearalone. Thanks to the efforts of manywho are here this week — fleet, manufacturer, supplier, military, government — in partnership, we’vebuilt the unforeseen.

Part of how we’ve done that isto show fleet users what’s real, andlet them touch, feel and drive it.It’s an offshoot of what Alfred P.Sloan of General Motors called the“Motorama.” From 1949 to 1961,

GM staged what was essentially anauto show to showcase offerings thatbuyers had no other way of seeingin one place.

Today, we are pleased to presentour modern day Motorama in theform of our Ride-and-Drive. Thereare 35 advanced, product ionmedium- and heavy duty vehicleshere that you can test drive today.Perhaps the key takeaways from thisrobust event are:• Every major truck maker has a hybrid in production or pre-production,• These vehicles are available forpurchase today, and• You have purchasing options

The innovators who are present-ing their products or showcasingtheir fleets include industry leadersALTe, Azure, Bright Automotive,Coca-Cola Enterprises, Crane Carrier Company, Daimler Trucks,Delphi Corporation, Dynamics,Eaton, EMP, Johnson Controls,Lightning Hybrids, Kollmorgen,Navistar, Odyne, Oshkosh Corpo-ration, Parker Hannifin, Rexroth-Bosch Group, Siemens In dustries,Smith Electric Vehicle, TARDEC/NAC, Terex and U.S. Hybrid. Thisis a who’s who of the dynamic brain-

trust behind advancing the industryin 2010.

End-users will be delighted by thewide range of vehicle applications. The lineup includes a shuttle bus, refuse truck, full-sized bus, deliverytruck, street sweeper, bucket truck, parcel delivery unit, and a plug-inhybrid electric vehicle. Among the35 vehicles is the TARDEC/NACFuture Tactical Manuever Sustain-ment Vehicle, Azure’s Transit Con-nect, a Coca-Cola Enterprises’sdelivery truck, and Odyne’s under-ground utility vehicle.

And for the truck and tech geeksamong us, you must catch the con-voy! The festivities kick off at 8:30a.m. with a nearly mile-long convoyof advanced vehicles that begins atFairlane Town Center and ends atthe Hyatt Regency North Lot 5. Ifclean, breakthrough vehicles areshiver inducing for you, then don’tmiss the grand entrance of the vehicles that are driving change.

This is all tangible evidence thatwe are in a transitional time. Changeis a process and our first ten yearssuccessfully moved the needle. When HTUF 2010 concludes, ourwork begins on plug-ins and serieshydraulic; all electric drive; stop-

start systems and advanced compo-nents; high-efficiency drivelines andlow carbon fuels; and greater hybridexpansion into military service.

At HTUF we are shaping thatchange. Indeed, American philoso-pher, Eric Hoffer, observed “Intimes of change, the learner will in-herit the earth while the learned arebeautifully equipped for a world thatno longer exists.” May our “activelearning” continue today and for thenext 10 years!

Sincerely,Bill VanAmburg

Calstart this month announced the official launch of a new working group to advance clean vehicle development in the telecommunications industry: the HTUF TelecommunicationsWorking Group, with AT&T andVerizon the founding membersand co-chairs.

Calstart has set aggressivegoals for advancing cleantechnology.

Three of the five largest motorvehicle fleets in the country areoperated in the telecommuni-cations industry, Calstart says.

“Although per-vehicle fuelconsumption is low, the ag -

gregate volume of usage within these vehiclesequates to a potential for substantial fuel savings,”Calstart says, noting that the new group will focus

on cleaner and more fuel effi-cient options for Class 2-4medium-duty vehicles.

“Wi th the ob jec t i ve o f increasing clean truck tech -nology options for the entire industry, this cooperative Tele-com Working Group is one ofseveral initiatives being under-taken by both AT&T and Verizonto make their fleets, and theirentire operations, cleaner andgreener,” Calstart says.

Both AT&T and Verizon have committed to sizable numbers of alternative vehicles, like this compressed natural gas Ford van, converted to CNG by BAF Technolgies (a unit of Clean Energy Fuels) and operated by AT&T in San Francisco. Now, with HTUF’s help, the two big telcoms are redoubling their efforts in hybrids.

Georgia-based FZ SoNick is at HTUF pro-moting Zebra brand high-temperature sodiumnickel batteries.

More than 100 million miles have been loggedby vehicles with the high-energy (120 watt-hoursper kilogram) Zebra batteries, the new proprietorssay. Applications range from the two-passengerThink City battery electric car in Norway to UTCfuel cell Van Hool buses operated by AC Transitin Oakland, Calif.

“It’s a cost effective solution compared tolithium today,” says Ohio-based strategic adviserPeter Thomas. “And we are profitable today.”

The name of the company? F stands for Fiamm,Z for Zebra, and SoNick for sodium nickel.

Fiamm? It’s the third largest manufacturer ofstarter batteries in the world, Thomas says, andin addition to sodium nickel and lead acids haslithium batteries in development.

Development continues apace at Remy Elec-tric Motors on development of the HVH410that will power Allison’s next generation ofmedium truck drivetrains.

Samples of the motor, which was announcedat last year’s HTUF, have been shipped to Allison and to other prospective customers, ac-cording to Tom VanderLaan, VP for global au-tomotive and hybrid salesat Remy Inc. “We’re talk-ing to just about everytruck OEM across the fullspan of on- and off-roadvehicles,” he says.

Remy has received agovernment grant to helpbuild a production facil-ity for the HVH410. Itwill likely be located inthe Midwest and willramp up to produce an initial 20,000 motors ayear in 2012, with a second stage aiming for an-nual capacity of 100,000.

The HVH410 features a square wire “hairpin”stator winding technology that allows greaterpower and torque for a diameter 75% that of stan-dard motors. The first version is rated at 133 kilo-watts peak power; a high torque model under

development will boost this to 275 kilowatts.VanderLaan noted that Remy has concen-

trated on increasing the power of its motors byadjusting their length while keeping a standard, smaller diameter. The high torque motor isaimed at military and off-road applications.

The new HVH410 will enter a market vastlydifferent from the last couple of years, where

business has been flat.“Over the last 12 monthswe’ve seen a step changein activity as auto andcommercial OEMs be-come more serious abouth y b r i d d r i v e , ” s a i d VanderLaan. “The atti-tude has gone from ‘if’ to‘when.’ We’ve finally seena sea change.”

Meanwhile Remy hasagreed with the MotoCzysz motorcycle com-pany to bring to market a new generation elec-tric drive system that will combine Remy’spatented high voltage hairpin electric motortechnology with a patent pending cooling andintegration technology that MotoCzysz recently demonstrated on a motorcycle drivenby a Remy HVH250 motor.

Page 6: Fleets & Fuels ShowTimes 09-30-10 at HTUF 2010 - Hybrid Truck User's Forum National Conference

The Hybrid Truck Users Forum has come a longway since it was drawn up on the back of a napkin more than ten years ago by Paul Skalny, director of the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Re-search, Development and Engineering Center’s National Automotive Center, and Calstart VP Fred Silver.

And so began TARDEC’s funding of HTUFand its partnership with Calstart, which contin-ues today. But the forum has now broadened itsinitial military focus to encompass an entire com-mercial industry and users as well.

“The first HTUF — there might have been100 people there — had the highest percentagewe’ve ever had since of government officials,”Skalny told F&F ShowTimes. The only suppliers,he says, were those with one-off hybrid demon-strators commissioned by the Army, becausethere were no other suppliers.

Even then Skalny and Silver recognized thatto achieve anything toward its original vision ofintroducing hybrid technology to the Army,HTUF would need to embrace users. The trou-

ble was there weren’t any.In the years since, HTUF has

formed working groups to bring to-gether suppliers and users of hybridtechnology, all in the commercialworld, and included the military sothat it could gain confidence in hybriddrives from the experience and databeing gathered in fleet use acrossAmerica.

Ten years ago there no hybridtrucks on the road; today there are2,500. Asked if this represents slowprogress, Skalny said “No. Ten years might seemlike a long time, but it’s a short span in terms ofvehicle electrification, which has been going onfor over a century.”

Now there are a million and a half miles of dataand enough experience for the military to lookseriously at hybrid technology. HTUF’s militaryvehicle working group met here for the first timethis week to help allocate $800,000 of TARDECmoney to cover the additional cost of the mili-

tary buying up to 15 hybrid trucks by the end ofnext year. And HTUF will be involved in threetrials over the next couple of years to demon-strate off-road and construction applications.

The military will first adopt hybrid drive fornon-tactical vehicles. Skalny noted there is an in-creasing convergence between the military andcommercial worlds on issues such as fuel effi-ciency, environment, silent watch, silent travel, increases in acceleration and lower costs.

The first ever government propos-als to regulate greenhouse gas andfuel efficiency standards for heavytrucks will be released within thenext few days, according to MargoOge, director of the Environmen-tal Protection Agency’s Office ofTransportation and Air Quality.

In a videotaped message toHTUF’s 10th anniversary confer-

ence Wednesday, she said the newstandards will be fast-tracked toapply as soon as the 2014 modelyear — “and that’s a real short leadtime.” The heavy-duty standardsunder consideration have the po-tential to reduce GHG emissionsby approximately 250 million met-ric tons and save over 500 millionbarrels of oil over the life of vehi-

cles produced in the first five yearsof the program.

The goal for heavy trucks to re-duce fuel consumption by 20% andcut GHG emissions by 25% was theoverriding theme of the opening ses-sion of HTUF, where Calstart pres-ident and CEO John Boesel notedthat when HTUF was launched in2001 there wasn’t a single hybrid

truck on the road. Now there are2,500. While noteworthy, that is notsufficient momentum — the indus-try needs to ship at least 3,000 a yearto be viable.

The EPA standards will be a big boost. The industry will haveput 1,000 hybrid trucks on theroad in the last three years despitethe recession “and it’s exciting to think what we can do goingahead,” said Scott Harrison, CEOof Azure Dynamics.

Proposals for new standards due any day to regulate fuel consumption

and emissions from heavy trucks will not in themselves be sufficient to

achieve goals for a cleaner environment.

That’s the view of Margo Oge, director of the EPA’s office of Trans-

portation and Air Quality.

“We need [government] policy decisions on biofuels and advanced

technologies” to get there, she told HTUF yesterday in a video message.

She did not give details of the EPA’s proposed standards for heavy

trucks, which will begin to be effective for the 2014 model year, but said

the document will also include a technology roadmap through 2025.

“It’s not just engines but batteries, tires and aerodynamics,” she

said, noting that incentives should also be considered for the deploy-

ment of advanced technologies, especially for fleet users.

Territory manager Joe Perry of Michelin explains the weight-and fuel-saving attributes of the double-wide, low-rolling re-sistance X One tire to Master Sergeant Thuan Treon of theU.S. Army at HTUF 2010.

Using X One tires can pare fuel use by about 4%, Michelinsays. This week South Carolina-based Michelin North Amer-ica is celebrating sales of one million of them.

Like HTUF, the X-One is in its tenth year. Michelin earlier this year unveiled the X One XDA, described as “handsdown” the most fuel-ef ficient drive tire available in North America.

“For long-haul truck fleet managers and owner-operatorsstill sitting on the fence about wide-single tires, now is thetime to make the switch from traditional duals,” MichelinAmericas Truck Tires product marketing manager Don Bald-win said at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville thispast March. Fuel savings can reach 7%, the company says, when the X One tires are used with Michelin’s XZA3 steertires and X One XTA trailer tires.

A HTUF/Calstart group formed to help theadoption of hybrid of non-combat trucks by theU.S. military met here for the first time this week.

It’s first task: to help the distribution of$800,000 of funds allocated this year by theU.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center(TARDEC) to cover the incremental cost of five to 15 hybrid trucks by the endof 2011.

The group, which includes the armedservices, major fleets, the DoD, the criti-cal, fleet-approving U.S. General ServicesAdministration, and an assortment of military facility fleet managers, will exploreall issues related to the introduction of hybrid trucks. Training and logistics are key

as they explore the possibil-ity of common purchasesacross the military.

“Most of these purchasesare off-the-shelf commercial

trucks and vehicles,” says Calstart project man-ager Steven Sokolsky, who told F&F ShowTimesthat the military has almost 100,000 diesel trucksin use in the U.S. alone.

He believes that the Army and Navy will bethe first to commit to hybrids, with commitmentsforthcoming perhaps within the next two months.“They have a tremendous challenge to reducetheir use of petroleum, with the Army alone seek-ing cuts of 2% a year,” he says.

“The higher peak output rating of thissystem will improve the operating charac-teristics of larger vehi-cles, most notably forgrade climbing and ac-celeration,” UQM tech-nology VP Jon Lutz saidwhen the new device wasformally launch this past July.

Earlier in the month, UQM disclosed aninitial order for more than 50 PowerPhaseelectric propulsion systems “as part of thefleet build and vehicle development activ-ities of an established international auto-mobile manufacturer.”

Deliveries are slated for the fourth quar-

ter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011.Automobile companies typically build testfleets to evaluate new vehicles that areunder development prior to their marketlaunch, UQM said.

“We consider our selection by this in-ternational automobile manufacturer to be a significant development,” said com-pany president Bill Rankin.

“We have been indiscussion with andunder evaluation bythis new customer forover six months andhave satisfied their de-

manding requirements for system per-formance, safety, quality, availability andprice. Introduction of this vehicle is tar-geted for 2012 and we have quoted deliv-ery and price for over 25,000 systems,”Rankin said.

UQM also introduced a 5-kilowatt DC-ACinverter here at HTUF.

Eaton is introducing Brake Blend tointegrate its Hydraulic Launch Assisthydraulic hybrid with commercialelectronic brakes by Bendix. Thejoint system will improve HLA vehiclecontrol, making operation “consis-tent with baseline trucks.”

Eaton is showing this Ford F-550 chassis utility truck that hasa developmental plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain withNanophosphate brand lithium ion batteries by A123 Systems. The vehicle is being developed in league with EPRI, the Elec-tric Power Research Institute, and utilities like Pacific Gas &Electric that buy large numbers of the Ford “trouble truck.”

Eaton offers both series and parallel electric hybriddrives, as well as series and parallel hydraulic hybrid drives.Eaton drives may be seen on Navistar International andDaimler Freightliner trucks here.

A123 has opened what it says is the largest lithium ionbattery plant in North America in nearby Livonia.

Eaton is at Regency 15 and A123 is at Regency 20-21.

“Just north of 500 hybrid-electric Freightliner CustomChassis Corp vehicles are in service nationwide, with abacklog of 200” on order, according to FCCC directorof sales and marketing Jonathan Randall.

The company introduced the first hybrid-electric motorhome three years ago and has found sales disappointingas the economy slumped. But its plug-in hybrid-electricschool bus is doing much better, he said. FCCC, likeFreightliner a unit of Germany’s Daimler, plans to ex-pand hybrid-electric technology across its product linein the first quarter of next year, he added.

A new aerodynamic walk-in van was introduced as abattery electric vehicle by Freightliner Custom ChassisCorp and partner Morgan Olson here Tuesday.

Parker Hannifin’s RunWise DrivetrainPowers Xpeditor E3s for Florida FleetsHydraulic hybrid drive supplier Parker Hannifinand Autocar Truck are moving toward commer-cial production of Autocar’s Xpeditor E3 withParker’s fuel-saving RunWise drive next year— 11 pre-production vehicles have just been delivered to three South Florida fleets following

a two-route, 2,500-household trial in westernMiami-Dade County.

Miami, Miami-Dade, and Hialeah are takingone, six, and four of the trucks, respectively.

RunWise, Parker says, “replaces a refuse truck’sconventional drive train with a series hybrid drivesystem that marries the variable features of a hydrostatic drive, ideal for urban routes, with theefficient performance of a mechanical drivethat performs best at highway speeds…

“Fuel consumption is reduced 30% to 50%.”“These deliveries,” said Parker Hannifin Hy-

draulics Group president Jeff Cullman, “repre-sent the first commercial use of this technology.”

“It is a very cool technology,” says Vance Zanardelli, energy recovery business unitmanager under Cullman.

“We’ve got a system that’s twice as powerfulas any of our competitors,” Zanardelli says, thekey being “the most efficient pumps in the busi-

ness.” Parker also claims proprietary softwarethat allows for seamless shifting and smootherbraking, improving drivability.

“We’re able to put down significantly moretorque off the line,” he told F&F ShowTimes.“Drivers can do whatever they want to do,” hesays, and fuel savings have been “pretty con -sistent around the 40% range.”

“This is a no-compromise approach,” Zanardelli says, forecasting a seven-year paybackstrictly on fuel and maintenance savings. “It’s notsomething that requires government stimulus.”

“It’s very rare that you get something like thisthat has a compelling value proposition right outof the box,” he says. “I think it’s going to reallychange the industry.”

Carbon fiber accumulator shells for the5,000-psi Parker System are thus far beingsupplied by Lincoln Composites.

The vehicles for the Florida fleets were sup-plied by the Palmetto Truck Center in Miami.

The next sales are likely to be in the SouthFlorida area too, says Autocar applications engi-neering director Mark Neale, noting that his firmand Parker have support personnel located there.

Among them is Doug Yglesias, formerly of Palmetto Truck andnow with Parker Hannifin.

Parker notes that the U.S. EPA’sNational Vehicle and Fuel Emis-sions Laboratory in Ann Arbor,Mich. has “played a significant rolein pioneering hydraulic hybridtechnology and partnered withParker and Autocar in the earlytesting of these vehicles.”

Tests of the RunWise hybridover five years have shown a 45%

fuel savings, says Autocar sales VP Cliff Buck, with brake life extended 800 to 900%. Instead ofevery 90 days, “Now you’re going to be doing abrake job every two and a half years,” he says.

Buck told F&F ShowTimes that the Parker driveis by far the most robust on the market.

Autocar Will OfferCNG-Fueled E3 in 2011

Autocar Trucks will launch a compressed nat-ural gas-fueled version of its Xpeditor E3 withParker Hannifin RunWise hydraulic hybrid drivetrain in late summer 2011, sales VPCliff Buck said at the WasteCon 2010 showin Boston last month.

“This time next year, mid-summer, we intend to introduce the hybrid RunWise system on CNG power,” Buck told F&F Show-Times, and customers, at WasteCon.

CNG emits better than 20% less green-house gas than diesel, Buck says. Autocaralready claims the lead in Class 8 low cab forward refuse trucks powered by natu-ral gas, as it expects to deliver more than1,000 such trucks in 2010, approximatelydouble its volume of two years ago.

The City of Miami has taken just one of the Parker HannifinRunWise-drive Autocar Expeditor E3s, but may well buy more.
