Transcript of Flat Francis welcomes SPECIAL VISITOR Pope Francis to America · from St. Jude The Apostle Catholic...
ISSUE No. 1
FALL 2015
A bi-annual publication providing the latest updates from St. Jude The Apostle Catholic School.
Flat Francis welcomes Pope Francis to AmericaChicago-based Catholic Extension helped build excitement for Pope Francis’
trip to the United States by creating Flat Francis. Flat Francis is a spin-off of
“The Flat Stanley Project” which centers on a paper cutout of Flat Stanley, a
character in popular children’s books of the same name, being photographed
with people in numerous locations. Looks like our St. Jude community certainly
showed Flat Francis a great time!
ST. JUDE SCHOOL WELCOMES A SPECIAL VISITOR
Sister Sally White a.k.a. Sister
Francis Maureen, founding principal
of St. Jude School, joined us for
Mass on the feast of St. Jude. We
are forever grateful to Sister Sally
and the Grey Nuns…brave women
who ventured to the south from
Pennsylvania to start our wonderful
school. An interesting side note…
Sister Sally’s brother, Frank White,
composed the alma mater that we
still sing today.

One of the most anticipated
days of the year is Blessing
of the Pets in honor of
St. Francis, Patron Saint
of animals.
Blessing OF THE
Service TO Others
Pets
Our Living SaintsFollowing an in-depth study of the lives of the
saints, our third graders dressed as their patron
saints and celebrated All Saints Day with a
special school-wide Mass. This is a St. Jude
tradition that goes back more than 30 years.
Teddy Bear Drive Sandy Springs Police officers have
extra fuzzy passengers in their patrol
cars thanks to the first grade Teddy
Bear Drive. The first graders, together
with their eighth grade buddies,
collected dozens of bears for the police
to give to children who
suffer traumatic events.
Police meet children
daily who are victims
of crimes or who
witness difficult
situations. It has been
found that the gift
of a teddy bear,
when placed in the
hands of a child,
can have a calming
soothing effect.
SECOND GRADE DIAPER DRIVE
Our House breaks the chains of homelessness by providing
quality early childhood education and comprehensive support
services for families who are experiencing homelessness.
Each year, our 2nd graders collect items such as wipes,
soap, detergent, diapers, etc. to assist the families utilizing
the services of this organization.

St. Jude middle schoolers once again
dazzled the community September
23-27 when they presented their
“Cirque de Soleil” type show in the
school gym. With the help of Circus
of the Kids, a Florida based educa-
tional program, the students learned
and then performed breathtaking
acts including trapeze, suspended
silk aerialists, juggling, trick skating,
balancing, and more. There was even
a human jump rope! Not only did
they stun the community with their
talents, but also the student body of
St. Peter Claver Catholic School in
Decatur to whom a special invitation
was issued. According to SPC
principal, Mrs. Suzanne Greenwood,
the entire experience, from the
moment her students boarded the
bus until the time they returned, was
“delightful, uplifting, and joyful for
students and teachers alike.”
This year marks the 5th biennial circus
for St. Jude. According to St. Jude
principal, Mrs. Patty Childs, participants
in the circus learn more than just
physical stunts…they learn the value
of trying new things and the courage
that comes with the mastery of a
new skill. She continues to bring the
circus to St. Jude every other year
because, as she says, “The children
learn life lessons that could never
be taught in a classroom the way
they are taught in circus. They learn
resilience, they learn to pick them-
selves up and try again. They learn
that everything may not come out
perfectly, but hold your head up and
smile and style!” Participating in the
circus gives students the know-how
to teach their friends and family the
power of a “can-do” attitude.

We kicked off our ‘15 – ’16
Annual Fund campaign with
our Chastain Night event on
September 12th. Over 240
parents, faculty, and staff
members attended a fun night
under the stars on the SJA
soccer fields and danced to
the live music of the Steven
Lee Band. The Annual Fund
allows us to continue to
enhance excellence in all
areas of academics and
student development as well
as our school facilities. Our goal
is 100% parent participation
by December 18th – Annual
Fund payments are accepted
through May 31, 2016.

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade are busy learning about
innovative new advancements in technology and claim it as one of their
favorite classes. A highlight this year is working with one of our two new
3-D printers, generous gifts from our PTA. In a cross-curricular project,
the fourth grade studied Georgia in social studies, produced State of
Georgia shaped cookie cutters using the 3-D printer in technology, and
then used the cookie cutters to make clay ornaments in art. Students in
the Middle School elective program are learning how to create objects
using the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, Autodesk Inventor,
and are having fun generating cartoons with the Stop Motion Animation
program. Always ready to help the school, the middle school students
used the 3-D printer to craft hall passes for their classrooms.
DID YOU KNOW?
Matching Gifts
Many companies offer a
matching gift program for
their employees’ charitable
contributions. Matching gifts
are a great way to double
or even triple your gift to
St. Jude the Apostle Catholic
School. To find out if your
(or your spouse’s) employer
participates in a matching gift
program, contact your human
resources department. If they
do, please complete their
matching gift form according
to your employer’s guidelines,
and send it to Katy Cowan in
the Advancement Office. You
will be recognized for the full
amount of your contribution
plus the match. Matching gifts
offer a great opportunity to
increase your giving level; your
$500 donation matched by
$500 = $1,000 (Major Donor
level) gift to St. Jude School!
Gifts of Stock
Did you know that a quick and
easy way to make your Annual
Fund donation is by transferring
securities such as stocks,
bonds, and mutual funds to
St. Jude School? This may be
a particularly beneficial way
for you to support our school,
since capital gains tax is avoided
and the tax deduction is based
on the value of the stock on
the day of transfer. Securities may be given
to St. Jude School by transferring them
through your broker to Beverly S. Glenn
at SunTrust, 404.724.3556.
Please notify Katy Cowan in the
Advancement office, 770.394.2880 x424
to inform us that a transfer is being made
and provide the name of the stock.
