FALL 2010 Your commitment to recycling is inspiring. If everyone followed your example, our earth would be cleaner, greener and healthier for all! Tom DeGise County Executive This November 15th, in celebration of America Recycles Day, the Hudson County Improvement Authority’s 9th Annual Crayon Recycling Contest will offer our students another chance to be National Champs! To get your school involved in the 9th Annual Crayon Recycling Contest please call 1-800-540-0987 or visit www.hcia.org Five Time National Champs! When the HCIA began our annual Crayon Recycling Contest 9 years ago we never imagined that our students would be National Champions Five Times in a Row! For the past 5 years running you have donated more crayons than any other kids in the country. We always knew you guys were smart and that you cared about our envi- ronment, and we are so impressed by your dedication and commitment to recycling! Since Hudson students began this contest 8 years ago, you have collectively recycling an astounding – an amazing – an unbelievable – 8.9 TONS OF CRAYONS. That’s 17,838 POUNDS OF CRAYONS!!! That is like recycling almost Five Cars – or one Giant Eighteen- Wheeler! You have until December 23rd to gather all your old and broken crayons. Give them all to your teacher once you’ve collected them and we’ll do the rest. And once we recycle them you will all receive new, crazy-colored crayons to replace the old ones. But the greatest reward of all will be that you did your part for the Earth! The HCIA will also reward student participation with earth-friendly presentations at schools. Winning schools will be awarded for their accomplishment and all students will be recognized for their recycling efforts. Students also get the chance to see all of the winning schools in the Spring issue of Seasons for Kids and will be honored on the HCIA’s website www.hcia.org. Hudson’s Kid Krusaders

CFLEnergy Efficiency

Special light bulbs and appliances that save energy, save money on utility bills and help protect theenvironment by reducing the

demand for electricity.

A type of light bulb (Compact Fluorescent Bulb) designedto replace “old-style” light bulbs which use less energy, have a longer life and keep our rooms just as bright.

The most common way that pollution reaches local rivers, creeks and lakes. Rainwater can carry chemicals, sediments and other forms of pollution into waterways like the Hackensack

River if we carelessly litter or throw things downsewer drains.

Putting bills and junk mail into a machine that tears them into tiny little scraps of recyclable paper andstops crooks from stealing people’s identities.

Several people joining in one car to go to school or work. By carpooling or taking public transportation less carbonmonoxide and greenhouse gases are released into our air.

Get ready for another beautiful HCIAEarth Poster ContestCalendar! Every year I am excited to see theamazingly imaginativeworks of art that Hudson County students

design to celebrate Earth Day. With ‘A Billion Acts of Green’ as a theme, students were able to show all thedifferent ways we can each do ourpart to protect our Earth. I am soproud of all the kids and teacherswho participated, and I know youwill just love the colorful calendaryou helped create!

Say What!!!Say What!!!In a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his or her

adult weight in garbage. This means that each adult will leave 90,000 pounds of trash for his or her children.

A full bath tub requires about 70 gallons of water, while taking a five-minute shower uses only 10 to 25 gallons.

If only 100,000 people stopped their junk mail, we could save up to 150,000 trees annually.

One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year.

Nearly 218,000 tons of shredded paper is used each year for animal bedding.

Five recycled plastic bottles make enough fiberfill to stuff a ski jacket.

“A Billion Acts of Green” was 2010’s Annual Earth Day Poster Contest theme and boy did itget our students thinking of how they can do their part to save our environment. Hundredsof students turned in their own colorful and artistic interpretations of the everydayways we can save energy, reduce, reuse and recycle. The winning posters are displayedthroughout the HCIA’s colorful calendar that will be distributed throughout HudsonCounty schools.

The Hudson TMA encourages parents to walk their childrento school rather than drop them off by car. Limiting the congestionof automobiles around our schools at the busiest times of the day is a goal we all should share. We can improve the health and safety of our children, as well as our own, by walking to school as oftenas possible. You can evenstart your own “walkingbus” to school with yourchildren’s friends and classmates. Parents line upwith children at pre-arranged“bus stops.” The furthestfamily begins the trip walkingtowards school, “picking up”the other families along the way.
