ABOUT US (CONTINUES)

Overview Brochure

What we doDayton Crayons to Classrooms (DC2C) is a free store for teachers from under-funded K-12 schools that serve children living in poverty in Ohio’s Miami Valley.

In partnership with local businesses, individual donors, and community volunteers, DC2C lifts at-risk children’s level and love of learning by collecting and distributing donated supplies and surplus products for use in the classroom.

Teachers from eligible schools are invited to “shop” for what they need in our retail-style free store in the Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley building in Dayton, Ohio.

Because we are a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, contributions to Crayons to Classrooms are tax deductible.

HOW WE STARTEDIn 2006, a group of Dayton businesses and nonprofit organizations researched “free stores” for teachers across the United States. They learned that 38 resource centers support student learning by collecting surplus, close-out, and other useful materials for distribution to classroom teachers in schools serving lower-income families.

These civic leaders decided to establish our Dayton version: Crayons to Classrooms. By December 2007, the DC2C board of trustees had hired our executive director. The Mathile Family Foundation and The Dayton Foundation pledged financial support to begin the project. The IRS certified DC2C as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit in March 2008.

Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley offered us warehouse, retail, and office space at 1511 Kuntz Road in Dayton. This location provides over 12,000 square feet of warehouse storage, retail store space, office space, use of Goodwill’s telephone system and technology network, access to a fleet of trucks for pick-up services, and materials handling and unloading services.

We opened our doors to teachers from selected schools in January, 2009.

We solicit donations of products to build up our inventory. The number of teachers we can serve directly depends upon the amount of donated product on hand.

Our ultimate goal is to serve teachers and students in 88 Dayton area schools where more than 70% of the students live at or below poverty.

TEACHER RESOURCES

We invite all teachers to take advantage of the compiled resources below. As we discover more opportunities and useful material, we will continue to develop this page. Grant Opportunities:

The Kids In Need Foundation (Continues) is a national 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 1995. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need. Its National Network of Resource Centers includes 34 facilities where teachers from low-income schools go to obtain free school supplies for their students. School supply giveaways in communities not served by Resource Centers are accommodated through the School Ready Supplies program, and students who have gone through natural disasters are helped to get back to their normal routines with new backpacks and supplies through the Second Responder program. In addition, two Teacher Grant programs award preK-12 educators with funding to provide innovative learning experiences for students. The Kids In Need Foundation has distributed more than $668 million in school supplies since its founding, directly benefiting 4.2 million students and more than 120,000 teachers annually, and has awarded $1.6 million in grants to teachers. Kids In Need has earned the Gold GuideStar Exchange Seal, demonstrating its commitment to transparency, and has been given a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, indicating that it operates in a fiscally responsible way and outperforms most other charities in America. History

The Kids In Need Foundation (KINF) was established in 1995 by the school supplies and office products industry. Supported financially at first by the industry’s international trade association, KINF became self-supporting in 2002.

In 1997, KINF opened its first Resource Center in Chicago. At the time, no other national non-profit organization had the same mission. The Teacher Grants program was introduced that same year.

By the end of 1999, KINF had opened five Resource Centers, and the concept of a facility where teachers could go to obtain free supplies started catching on. The first Summit for staff and volunteers from free stores for teachers to share best practices was held that year as well.

Page 24: Crayons To Classroom

24

Crayons to Classroom1511 Kuntz Road

Dayton, Ohio 45404-1232937.528.6400

History (Continues)In 2004, the model changed slightly in that we no longer started Centers but “adopted” already established ones. Free stores now apply to become affiliates of the National Network of Resource Centers.

At the end of 2007, KINF became independent from the trade association. In 2004, the School Ready Supplies program was established to accommodate community school supply giveaway programs, and in 2013, a program to provide school supplies to children affected by natural disasters, Second Responder®, was added, although KINF had already helped devastated communities, such as providing $7 million in supplies to Gulf Coast schools after Hurricane Katrina.

Now in 2016, there are 38 affiliate Resource Centers. Headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, KINF also has additional staff based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. KINF has distributed nearly $800 million in school supplies since its founding, directly benefiting 4.8 million students and more than 150,000 teachers annually, and has awarded $1.7 million in grants to teachers.
