From the Pastor Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'" Mk 13:35-37 The excerpt above comes from today's gospel and pretty much sums up our attitude, or what should be our attitude, regarding the Season of Advent. The word "Advent" comes from the Latin words ad + venire which mean "to come". In short, Advent is a season in which we prepare for the coming of the Lord. While reflecting on his first coming to us as a babe in a manger, we also prepare ourselves for his coming in glory with all of his angels to judge the living and the dead. That said, we must remind ourselves that Advent, like Lent, is in some ways a penitential season. Al-though the Church does not mandate penance as it does during Lent, we are still expected to prepare ourselves through various penitential acts for the day of the Lord's coming. I like to think of it this way. When I was a child we always had a great feast on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our house was a great hub of activity for nine kids, their friends, and relatives from all over. As a child I remember such joy and eagerness awaiting the festivities to come. But first things al-ways came first. Before anything else, we had a checklist. 1. Clean the house. That meant from top to bottom. For my mom, that meant even cleaning out the closets in the bedroom. One year my brother and I (we shared a bedroom) while cleaning our room decided to go for the easy way and throw all our shoes and clothes into the closet and close the door. Cleaning done! How easy was that? Needless to say, mom was on to us and we ended up spending more time cleaning than we would have if we had done it right the first time. My point? Clean the house of your soul from top to bottom with confession. Join us for our penance service Monday, Dec. 4th at 7:00 pm. Is the closet full? Feel free to make an appointment with me or Fr. Ben. 2. Start cooking dinner. On Christmas Eve we would start cooking dinner, then go to Mass, and then come home and feast. In a way, our feast always revolved around Mass on Christmas Eve. So it should be with us. Everything we do should revolve around Sunday Mass. Too often we get our pri-orities backwards and make our attendance at Mass revolve around our activities. The result? Many of us rarely make it to Mass and when we do we are bombarded by a myriad of distractions because we haven't properly prepared ourselves. From the catechism: The Sunday Eucharist is the founda-tion and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation com-mit a grave sin. Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity. Together they testify to God's holiness and their hope of salvation. They strengthen one another under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 3. Wrap your presents. After dinner on Christmas Eve we had an exchange of gifts. On the Thanksgiv-ing prior to Christmas we drew names out of a hat and would prepare a gift for the person we had chosen. The best gifts? Gifts we could and would use. Gifts that brought joy and felicity to the re-cipient. May I suggest something? Let's try and give to another a gift they can really use. Perhaps you might volunteer at the Food Pantry or our Christmas Basket ministry. Perhaps you might like to volunteer some time at Hawke's home or Brother Beno's. Give a gift that will make a difference, one that will meet the dire needs of another and help them on the way to salvation.
