Matthias Müller is a math teacher who has been working for some years with students using Lego Mindstorms

and the MIT App Inventor. He offered different kind of course in the after school programs of five schools in

Jena (Thüringen). As an important part of his work, he is employed at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena

and is involved in educational research projects connected to the ICT use in math classrooms.

In our Business Sharks class, students play the role of young entrepreneurs as they start with the germ of an idea

for a business and product and take it through the entire entrepreneurial process. Our students develop

prototypes, formulate a business plan and devise a marketing strategy. Meanwhile, students learn through

contextual lessons on concepts such as wages, profits and branding while designing print ads, acting out “TV

commercials,” researching real estate locations and designing their storefronts. The class concludes with our

young executives pitching their ideas to a "Shark Tank" panel of parents. These young entrepreneurs will really

be taking care of business!

Students will learn chess strategies and tactics. We will analyze famous chess games, and students will apply

what they are learning in matches against each other.

Students who know the difference between check, checkmate, and stalemate -- and have already checkmated

an opponent -- should be in the advanced group. Students who need instruction in the difference between

check, checkmate and stalemate should be in the beginner group (age, in chess, is not a very good indicator of

experience, and will not be stressed in these classes). BOTH groups will be taught algebraic notation, the

importance of the board, pattern recognition, and tactics.

Chamber Music String Groups Language: English

There is nothing like the fantastic experience of making music with your friends! All string players are invited

to join in the fun. Participants will be divided into small groups according to their age and level. Each group will

receive 12 coaching sessions (30-60 minutes depending on age) per semester with violinist and experienced

chamber music coach Susannah Foster. A final concert at the end of the semester will be augmented with

diverse performance opportunities in and around GISB.

Circuit Makers 101: Create Your Own Electronics

Let’s get creative with electricity! In this junior version of our Hands-On Electronics class, students will gain

experience with electronics by designing custom light-up greeting cards, electric games, mazes, and even

musical instruments. Each session consists of a circuitry lesson and a hands-on electronics project, using

components like lights, buzzers, switches, motors, and sensors. Circuit Lab staff will make sure participants

create a project that they can be proud of each day. Several class days include a take-home project.

The sky is the limit in Expert Architects! In this math, writing and presentation class, students each serve as

president of a new architectural firm and are tasked with designing and building the city’s next skyscraper.

Students study a kid-friendly history of skyscrapers and create a blueprint of their own stylized tall building.

They then must weigh other considerations including the environment, traffic and surrounding buildings using

Google Earth to find the perfect location for their project. Our expert architects create a three-dimensional

model of the structure and present their work to invited parents.

tying, or glueing.

In this class, students can bring their creative ideas to fruition in a fun, collaborative and exciting environment.

camera skills. Choosing to use either their own iPhones or the camera equipment that will be provided, the

group will write, shoot, and edit a film in a genre of their choosing. Students will learn to edit their films using

professional edit software like Adobe Premiere. Minimum 8 students.

In this afterschool workshop Terry, the Inventor Mentor, guides students through the entire invention

process, from the initial stages of brainstorming ideas straight through to prototyping and building their

inventions. In past workshops students have designed boats, fishing rods, robotic spiders, rocket launchers and

even hovercrafts!

Junior Choir will be conducted by Dunja Pechstein, a professional voice teacher and music educator, who has

worked at GISB for over 10 years. Everyone in grades 1/2 is welcomed to join Junior Choir, no audition is

required. We will do vocal warm ups, breathing exercises and sing fun songs for about 30 minutes. The

remaining 15 minutes will be used for musical discovery, choral games or just to relax and listen to music. The

classroom transforms into a working newsroom, complete with editorial staff, reporters, columnists and

headline writers. Each student plays multiple roles and works together to create an e-newspaper, as well as a

hard copy, with real stories about their local school and community. These reporters learn techniques for

crafting news stories, writing persuasive editorial essays and interviewing news-makers. Students edit each

Kinderchor Boston was founded in March of 2014 by Dunja Pechstein, a professional voice teacher and singer.

Kinderchor provides a unique opportunity for young children ages 7 - 11 to enhance their German through

choral music. Vocal warm-ups, breathing exercises as well as the repertoire of songs are especially focused on

developing the children's voice. We will be learning to sing in solfege, and will introduce basic music theory.

All rehearsals are conducted in German. Children will receive a music folder for song sheets and theory pages.

their very own robots under the guidance of an experienced AES instructor. Projects include remote control

cars, claws, cranes, crawlers and battle bots. Educational components include gear ratios, mechanical design,

electronics and robotics engineering. No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to have fun, build and

learn. Each student will receive an award on the last day of the session and have the opportunity to

earn Energy Belts to demonstrate their learned skills!

Middle School Dance Team Language: German

The students will learn choreographies that lead to school performances. The class is structured into a warm-

This program will introduce basic basketball skills like dribbling and shooting, but defense will also be

emphasized. There will be plenty of opportunities to showcase talent in scrimmages, either 3-on-3 or 5-on-5.

We will throw in some shooting contests and other fun activities as well. Conditioning will also be an

important part of our sessions. Join us for what is certain to be a fun and energetic time in the gym!

Obstacle course racing or OCR is one of the fastest growing sports of recent year. Students will train in all

types of fitness including strength, endurance, and flexibility through fun activities, games, races, and obstacles

providing them with the tools they’ll need to become an OCR competitor or to just have fun while enhancing

their athletic abilities. Students will learn focus, coordination, timing, and teamwork through the classroom

challenges, activities, and games. This class will be held over a Mass Motion Dance Studio (next to Jump on In,

5 minutes from school) students will be walked over and back by a Coach.

In our new photo-club we discover how to use modern dslr-cameras and digital picture-editing. We will learn

about shutter-speed, aperture, the use of different lenses, picture compositing and many more aspects of

Robots take on more and more tasks in industry and the service sector. The development of "intelligent"

machines is progressing so that robots will soon support people where we would not think today. In this

course, we will look at the basics of programming robots using LEGO Mindstorms. With start with simple

examples and short programming tasks. Finally, you will be able to build, control and program Mindstorms

robots. There will be a small contest at the end of the 1st semester in which the self-built robots compete

against each other.

Matthias Müller is a math teacher who has been working for some years with students using Lego Mindstorms

and the MIT App Inventor. He offered different kind of course in the after school programs of five schools in

Jena (Thüringen). As an important part of his work, he is employed at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena

and is involved in educational research projects connected to the ICT use in math classrooms.

Rock Climbing

Located just outside of Boston, Central Rock Gym Watertown has over 28,000 square feet of climbing, with

walls reaching as high as 50 feet. CRG Watertown is one of the most advanced gyms in New England featuring

the biggest lead structure on the East Coast. We have partnered with Central Rock Gym in Watertown for our Rock Climbing After School Program, which includes transportation from GISB to Central Rock Gym in

Watertown, and back. Beginner? Advanced? Does not matter in this class, because we are going to get into

multiple levels of climbing instruction and education. The students enjoy 1.5 hours of climbing each session.

Children and teens learn the basics of sewing through making fabulous projects in our creative and fun class!

Each week they can build on their repertoire of skills by creating a range of things such as pillows, skirts, tops,

No experience is necessary, as our knowledgeable staff can teach the basics (hand sewing, threading a

machine, basic machine stitches, seam finishes, etc.) and more involved sewing skills, such as zippers, buttons,

gathering, pattern reading, taking measurements, etc. There is no limit to what you can achieve!

Vegetable Circus Enrichment Programs empower children with life skills, promoting Healthy Eating, Healthy

Movement, and Healthy Relaxation. Vegetable Circus combines experienced and informed teachers who are

inspired by what they do with fun, age appropriate curriculum to provide direct, concrete experiences of

healthy living in Enrichment Programs that benefit the whole child.

In a typical Vegetable Circus Enrichment class, children share fresh fruit and vegetables while discussing and

learning about their nutritional benefits. Vegetable stretches help warm kids up for using their bodies to

develop circus skills and play fun games that build teamwork, coordination, patience, attention, and motor

control. Throughout the session, children exercise their creativity and develop self-confidence, creating end-

of-session performances and artwork to share with their peers and families.

Our woodworking program teaches basic woodworking skills using simple hand tools. By making objects out of wood, students learn to measure, sand, saw, hammer, join, glue, work with texture, and more. They learn

to use woodworking tools and terminology, and to follow safety rules. Students apply basic math concepts and

deepen their problem-solving skills. They learn by experience that incremental steps followed in a particular

sequence, result in projects in which they can take pride. Projects may include making a marble maze, treasure

chest, or thumb piano, among others.

This class is for any child who enjoys working with their hands. Needlework helps with concentration and fine

motor skills. Traditional crafts such as this have been enjoyed by people of all ages for thousands of years.

Offered will be knitting and crocheting, from beginners to more complicated pieces. We learn how to cast on,

knit and purl and to cast off; possibly also simple patterns and increasing stitches. Own ideas and suggestions

are welcome. Materials for the basic projects will be provided. Students will get to take their projects home to

work on, but must remember to return with them the following week. Limit: 10 students per class. Boys

welcome!

This Yoga class playfully introduces young children to concepts of yoga and mindfulness through movement,

Zumba Pilates “Zupi” Language: German
