• Green travel features including electric charging points and 100 covered cycle stands.
• Community engagement was integral to the build process with £5m being invested in a highways scheme.
• Considerate Constructors score of 38/40.
• Sustainable signage to educate customers on eco features.
• 100% of waste has been diverted from landfill with 87.5% of all waste segregated on site.
• 54,000 tonnes of quality soils and clay from the initial bulk excavation works was used in projects such as capping a contaminated quarry and developing a local Moto-X park.
• Resource sharing of left over materials and packaging through community initiatives.
• Lime stabilising ground below the building and car park helped reduce the quantity of concrete required in the foundations by 25%.
• Operational energy was 42% lower and carbon was 35% lower than a peer store.
• Maximised natural light via North lights and clerestory glazing with fully dimmable lighting to sales floor and integrated daylight control.
• Improved insulation and thermal mass by partially sinking the building in the ground with earth mounding around the perimeter.
• A biomass boiler plant supplies nearly three quarters of Cheshire Oaks’ heating.
• Free cool air handling via earth ducts and displacement ventilation.
• Cheshire oaks is the first retail store to use Hemclad®, an innovative pre-fabricated wall panel developed by Lime Technology.
• Use of social media as a new way of keeping the local community updated on the project throughout the build.
• Achieved the Wildlife Trust Biodiversity Benchmark for our ongoing management of the landscaping features at the store.
• Main refrigeration system is Hydrocarbon which reduces the impact on global warming compared with traditional HFCs. • HFC free air handling units.
• Resilient features include the white reflective roof, rainwater harvesting, displacement ventilation, Hemclad® external wall panels.
• Solar shading (Brise Soleil) has been installed to reduce energy costs. The high summer sun is reflected and lower winter sun is allowed to pass through, heating the store.
• The store is more resilient to flash flooding thanks in part to its mature trees, green walls and its sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS).
• 100% FSC-certified glulam timber is used in the roof and first floor structural decking.
• 100% recycled aluminium roof, fermacell drylining board and 40% recycled floor tiles.
• An 80,000 litre underground tank will collect water to serve the green wall and all toilets and displace a third of the store’s main water demands.
• Waterless urinals, dual flush WCs, sensor taps.
