It may begin very early in life – fear of the dark, fear of loud noises, fear of losing sight of mommy. Children ask for someone to check under the bed before they sleep. We still leave a light on in the hallway, so no one in the family gets lost in the dark on their way back to bed. We call loved ones from the tarmac when the plane lands, so they’ll know we’re safe and almost home. We fear the future. We fear the diagnosis. We fear the financial statement. We fear job cutbacks. We fear the IRS. We fear the late hour when the kids aren’t home yet. We fear the outcome, because we don’t know what it will be. We fear the situa- tions in the Senate, in the House of Representatives and in the White House. Scripture says that perfect love casts out fear (I John 4:18). Yet I wonder if sometimes that scripture makes us feel guilty because we continue to have fear, even when we know that God loves us and intends the very best for our lives. Scripture also says that God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but instead of spirit of power and love and self- control. (2 Tim 1:7) And the Old Testament too, has directives concerning fear: take courage, all you people of the land, says the LORD; work, for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. (Haggai 2: 4-5) Why do we continue to fear? And if we can’t stop it, can we at least slow it down, or keep fear at bay so it doesn’t consume us? The first disciples wondered the same thing following the execution and death of Jesus. Locked in the upstairs room with the curtains drawn, huddled together in the corner, wringing their hands, they worried that the fate that had met their Master, would also be theirs. What if the temple leaders accused them? What if the high priests put them on trial? What if crucifixion was to be their death sentence, too? We know how the story turned out. The good news was just about to fill their lives. But what happened before Jesus arrived? Fear. And what does fear do? It blocks our thinking. It blocks our creativity. It blocks our ability to pray in hope, to trust God’s future, to know that we are loved. When Jesus appeared to the disciples, he re- minded them of what they already knew. He reminded them of what they’d been taught. But before he reminded them, their minds couldn’t pull up that information. So I ask you this day to remember – while you’re not afraid. At this moment – remember. Remember the Scripture promises. Learn one new Scripture text today and commit it to memory – or write it down where you’ll know you can find it. Then, when the fear returns to you, remember that God did not orchestrate it. God does not want it for you. Instead, God wants you to know peace. And in peace, you will know lots of things. In peace you can make wise decisions. In peace, God can use you to change circumstances. In peace, you will know that you are not alone, because God has been with you the entire time. And in peace, you can go forward to victory. Rise from your fears and go out into the sunlight to meet your Risen Lord. Candice “Fear not, I am with you. I have called you by name. You are mine.” - Isaiah 43:1

Happy end of summer from the Learning More Committee! Members have enjoyed a brief time off from committee meet-ings during the summer but we are ready to get busy for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. VBS was very successful with a total of 82 children ranging in age from toddler to 5th grade enrolled. 28 of those children were “off the street” meaning they were not associated with our Church or Pre-School. Let us all pray that hearts were touched and seeds were planted! Next year’s VBS has been announced and will be set in the world of Knights, Castles, and Princesses. Many thanks to Dianne Cothran, Wendy Wills and a host of volunteers; you are loved and appreciated!

As announced by Pastor Candice from the pulpit, CONFIRMATION CLASSES will be held 9/8/19, 9/15/19, 9/22/19, 10/6/19, 10/13/19, 10/20/19, 10/27/19 and 11/3/19. The classes will begin promptly at 8:45 AM and be held in the Library. Those completing the classes will be set to join the Church on 11/10/19. Please contact the church office to attend or for more questions.

NaCoMe Retreat is quickly approaching and set for 9/27/19 to 9/29/19. The study book se-lected is: It’s Complicated by John Haberer. The cost for the retreat will be $90.00 and include lodging, meals and activities. Scholarships and other assistance are available. Church members if you are looking for a designation for donations, please consider the Fall Retreat. Please be watch-ing social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) for announcements.

Movie Afternoons are continuing through the summer with the next showing for August will be “Secretariat” shown on 8/25/19. Despite her lack of experience, housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over management of the family Thoroughbred farm after her father become ill. Successfully navigating her way through the male-dominated world of horse racing, Chenery, together veteran trainer Lucien Laurin fosters a gifted colt that ultimately crosses the finish line into history as the Triple Crown winner in 1973. This Disney movie stars Diane Lane, Scott Glenn, John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh, Margo Mar-tindale and James Cromwell. There will be no movie in September due to the Fall Retreat.

10/27/19 the movie selection will be “Hocus Pocus”. After moving to Salem, Massachusetts, teenager Max Dennison ex-plores an abandoned house with his sister and their new friend. After dismissing a story the new friend tells of a supersti-tious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal. This Disney movie stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Thora Birch, and Omri Katz. Due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays Movie Afternoons will be on hold until January 2020. As always the committee welcomes your suggestions for Movie Afternoons! The committee is still praying for volunteers for Sunday School Superintendent and Church Librarian. If you feel the call to help please contact a committed listed below. Wednesday Nights Together programs for the next year are the big topic of discussion by the committee. We ask that the regular Wednesday night attendees let a committee member know their thoughts on doing a 3 month, 6 month, or year-long study of the Bible. There are yearlong introductions to the Bible from studies such as Kerygma or Alpha studies. This, of course, would be a commitment and might better be served as a study for a different time. The committee welcomes any and all suggestions you may have about guest speakers and/or various topics of interest. WNT will resume 8/21/19. Finally possibilities concerning Christian education for the upcoming year include the following:

Another Sunday school class possible covering Bible studies or a social justice issue. A women’s study with a possible suggested book, Inspired by Rachel Held Evans

Committee members include Susan Baker, Susan Johnson, Nancy Pearson, Sharon Sides, Dianne Cothran, and Ann Thur-man. Remember to let us know your thoughts and suggestions. Also we welcome any of you to join our ranks!

LOVE IN ACTION MINISTRY (MISSION AND OUTREACH)

Habitat Landscape Project The Habitat Landscape Install took place on Saturday morning, July 20, in Portland, TN. We gathered at 7 AM at the Habitat home on a nice, hot day with tools and gloves ready to work. The project did turn out great thanks to all the 14 people who came to help! They were Johnny Brown, Mike Jones, Melanie and Michael Capps, Anna Dismukes, Bill Jones, Jerry Nicholson, Jonathan Nicholson, Susan Baker, Bess and Allan Hood, Susan Johnson, and Fran and Bob Young. We also want to thank Kitty

Armstrong for donating the straw, and Longhollow Gardens who donated a majority of the plants. It was a very worthwhile and fulfilling morning!

Meals on Wheels We are very excited to welcome Bess and Allan Hood, Bill and Dottie Jones, and Lynn Green to our Meals on Wheels delivery team. We do also want to thank all of our regular volunteers who have delivered food for many years. You all con-tinue to do an excellent job! Distribution of Appalachian Service Project (ASP) Funds The Love in Action Committee met several times in June to discuss the distribu-tion of $8,235.86 in the ASP account. We all agreed that these funds should be used for missions. After much prayer and discussion, we unanimously recom-mended that the funds be divided equally in the following three ways: one third to ASP, which was matched by a gift campaign that doubled that amount; one third to Children Are People (CAP); and one third to other mission needs. The other mission needs will be determined by our committee before the end of 2019. On June 23rd, the Session unanimously approved our recommendation and the funds to ASP and CAP have now been distributed. Thanks to all who worked and sup-ported ASP through the years. Hopefully, we will be able to participate with ASP again in the future.

VBS 2019: It’s official, VBS 2019, To Mars and Beyond, is in the books. We had good participation and a won-derful staff. As is stated in the Learn-ing More Committee report, there were about 82 students registered this year and almost 40 different people helped make their week great. Not all the students were with us every day nor was every staff member, but each one, student or staff, is what made it great. As a thank you to the staff, Ron and Wendy Wills graciously in-vited us on a cruise on Old Hickory Lake. On July 14th, 25 of the staff en-joyed a great evening on the lake and dinner at Cherokee Steak House. Kristen Boling and her mom Carolyn joined us at the restaurant. Thanks to Kristen’s prayers for no rain, we had a lovely dry evening! Our thanks go to you in the congregation as well. With-out your support and prayers we would not have such a great response to our VBS program. Also, we were able to share most of our decorations with Cook’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Mt. Juliet, for use in their VBS. Blessings all around!!

Save the Date: Saturday, August 10,

for the Annual Presbyterian

Women's Picnic.

This year's Presbyterian Women's

Annual Picnic will be held on Saturday,

August 10 at 11am in the Fellowship

Hall at Church. This year's program is

centered on "Nature's Beauty from

God Shown in Flowers." It will be

presented by Kay Flynn who is a

Nationally Accredited Flower Show

Judge and is now President of TAGS,

(Tennessee Arrangers and Growers),

among many other qualifications. She

will show us in a very interesting and

entertaining way how to prepare

flowers for arranging and how to

design various arrangements for the

home. Some lucky ladies will even be

able to take these designs home with

them! We will also be recognizing one

of our most-deserving ladies with the

PW Life Membership Award.

We are asking all ladies to wear

something with a flower design in it or

have a flower, real or artificial, pinned

on your clothing or in your hair. Both

of our PW Circles are working together

to make this happen. Circle 2 will be

bringing all types of sandwiches for our

"picnic", and we are asking all other

ladies to bring side dishes, salads and

desserts to share.
