Northwoods STaR Ministries
Joint Worship Service
Pioneer Park in Ogema
Sunday, June 23
9 am
Please join our four congregations of the Northwoods STaR Min-
istries—First Ogema, First Westboro, First Prentice and Zion Brant-
wood for a joint worship service on Sunday, June 23.
There will be fellowship following the service with donuts, coffee
and juice. Please feel free to bring something like muffins, bars,
fruit, etc., to add to fellowship if you would like.
Don’t forget your lawn chairs. Picnic tables will be set up in the
pavilion, but we hope additional seating will be necessary. This
is a great opportunity for members from our Parish to gather to-
gether. We hope to see you there.
Please invite your friends and family!
This will be the only worship service on Sunday, June 23.

From Pastor Paul
Friends in Christ,
Northwoods STaR Ministries' tagline is, "United in Christ. Sharing God's Love." I like it. It's short and to the
point. It says who we are – United in Christ – and it says where God calls us to go – Sharing God's Love.
Historically, I have struggled with determining the difference between what a mission statement is and
what a vision statement is. Often times it seemed to me that they were interchangeable. I often won-
dered why organizations had both. When I served Our Saviour's Lutheran, Chippewa Falls, we decided to
forego mission and vision statements in favor of a single statement of purpose. We took the advice of
Rev. David Daubert, from his book, "Living Lutheran: Renewing Your Congregation." He suggested that it
is God's Mission. We simply have a purpose within it.
Recently, in my roles on the boards of Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire and the Legacy Commu-
nity Center/Agnes' Table in Chippewa Falls, I've returned to swimming in the waters of mission and vision
statements. In doing so, my understanding of the two has been clarified. A vision statement declares the
ideal that we hope to attain. A mission statement declares what we will do in order to attain it.
Every week, before we are sent out to return to the world from worship, we declare our intentions. In
unison, we say that we are, "United in Christ. Sharing God's Love." Depending on where we attend, we
go on to say one of the following:
Brantwood: We are disciples of Christ, growing in faith, sharing our faith stories, serving others.
Ogema: We are called and gathered to share Christ as we minister to all, bringing an unchanging God
to a changing world.
Westboro:We are feeding bodies, minds, and spirits through Christ.
Prentice: We are Jesus' disciples welcoming every sinner, sharing Jesus' love & teaching, encouraging all
to share Christ-centered lives.
What if we declared that our vision, the vision of Northwoods STaR Ministries Parish, is to be unified in
Christ, sharing God's love? And what if our means for moving toward this shared vision is encompassed in
each of our individual mission statements?
On the evening of Sunday, April 28, twenty-two leaders from our four faith communities identified our
fears and frustrations, and our hopes and dreams for our NSM Parish. Two core desires were embedded
in everything we brought to the table. 1) We desire unity, and 2) we desire growth. I think our desire for
unity and growth are embedded in our vision to be unified in Christ, sharing God's love. I also think this
would get God's stamp of approval. It all falls within the realm of God's call for us to love God and neigh-
bor.
The hard work that we must now do is to identify some goals and strategic issues that impact our mission
and vision, to determine actionable targets within these issues, to come up with objectives to address
these targets, and plan the activities, stake-holders and timelines for accomplishing them.
This is, of course, just the beginning. We then must implement it, and on a regular basis at our Parish
Council meetings, congregational board meetings and various committee and group meetings evalu-
ate, on an ongoing basis, how we are progressing.
I like to call this ministry. Let me know if you would like to join me.
Warm Regards,
Pastor Paul

COMING IN July, First Lutheran Church in Prentice is
pleased to announce the introduction of an elec-
tronic option for making regular offerings. Contribu-
tions can now be debited automatically from your
checking or savings account. Our new electronic
giving program offers convenience for you and provides much-needed donation consistency for our
congregation. If you are currently giving on a weekly basis, you will no longer need to write out 52
checks a year or prepare 52 envelopes. And, when travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you
from attending services, this program will allow your weekly offerings to continue on an uninterrupted
basis. An authorization form and a “Frequently Asked Questions” flyer are available from the Prentice
