FIRST Lego League
The journey began in September and ended on
November 18th at the Lego League Competition. This
year’s theme was Hydro Dynamics, which explored all
things water. Our teams researched world water issues
and developed solutions to two of these issues, water conservation and
unsafe drinking water. The teams also worked on coding robots to meet different challenges at
the Lego League Competition. The teams had the opportunity to discuss water issues in
Uganda with James Harrington of the Ugandan Water Project. We Skyped with Mr. Harrington
and learned about how our solutions could help people that don’t have access to clean water or
enough water. The students did an awesome job working together and developing solutions to
different water issues in the world. The students did an excellent job on competition day
explaining their projects and completing the challenges.
We even had Ronnie DuFrane win the limbo competition!!!

A Note from the Board of Education President:
During the summer of 2017, the BOE voted to sponsor a pre-annexation study to determine
the feasibility of West Valley remaining autonomous or joining with either Ellicottville or
Springville Griffith Institute. A Request for Proposals was issued and two proposals were
returned in early fall. A stipulation of the RFP was that the West Valley District would fund the
study, as it is the Board who wants the information. The Board interviewed the firm of Castallo
and Silky LLC on 10-26-17 and subsequently chose them to conduct the outlined study for the
amount of $18,000. The quote on the other proposal was $27,500. Castallo and Silky were
chosen as they were more responsive to the District’s RFP.
Eric Lawton, Superintendent sent letters to the Superintendents of Ellicottville and
Springville Griffith Institute asking if they would be willing to provide information when
asked, by the consultants. Also included in the letter was a list of the information needed for
pre-merger feasibility study. Kim Moritz, Superintendent of Springville stated that they would
provide whatever is needed. Bob Miller, Superintendent of Ellicottville wanted to discuss the
RFP with his board.
An email was received from Bob Miller to Eric Lawton stating that they had no interest
in pursuing an annexation. However, Bob Miller also stated that he was willing to meet with
West Valley’s and Ellicottville’s Board leadership, as well as West Valley’s Superintendent to
listen to our thoughts about the pre-annexation study and why we are conducting it. This
meeting took place and Ellicottville discussed it at their December 5th board meeting.
Ellicottville board members are in agreement with providing a limited amount of information
provided the District pay their employees to gather the information. Our District is declining
this offer, as it is not in accordance with IRS regulations.
At the December 11th Board meeting the West Valley Board of Education discussed the
desire to continue with the pre-annexation study. The board asked Eric Lawton to contact Dr.
William Silky with the suggestion that his firm pay the Ellicottville school employees. Dr.
Silky indicated that this would not be appropriate practice for his firm. He suggested we could
investigate gathering data, without Ellicottville’s involvement, to review the financial impact of
an annexation by Ellicottville. As of this writing, the Board of Education’s plan is to have the
study completed by March 2018. The next Board of Education meeting is January 8, 2018. We
will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available.

West Valley Central School District Newsletter 3 January 2018
And a Happy New Year! It is that magical time when we have a whole new year to
plan. New Year’s resolutions are a plan to do better and to be better in 2018. That can take on
many forms. We can be more fastidious, healthier, and be kinder.
As we move into a new year, we are constantly trying to provide a wide variety of
opportunities for our students. This past year we included two running programs for our
younger students that both concluded with a 5 k run. We are competing in chess matches with
other school districts, our musicians have the opportunity to accompany the chorus in
performances and our band students have performed at the highest levels. The students in our
CTE programs are being exposed to amazing hands on experiences with electron microscopes
and the most current machines and tools that are being used in industry today. We provide
mentoring afterschool and competitive academics along with 56 college credits taught by our
own faculty. We will continue to offer programs to meet the needs of our students.
I usually plan on being healthier and setting some fitness goals for the year. This year I
am going to be more serious about that. With a reunion coming up this summer, I have set a
goal to lose 2 pounds by July. I feel this is obtainable if I just keep moving. A body at rest
tends to remain at rest and a body in motion tends to remain in motion, so I better keep moving.
This past year our country seemed to have a great deal of political tension. Many people
have been expressing frustration, fear, and unhappiness. The best way to be part of the solution
is to be kind. You don’t have to agree with someone to be respectful. Being kind to someone is
its own reward. I always remind students that the golden rule is to treat others the way you
want to be treated. It does not mean treat others the way they treat you. Even if someone is not
nice to you, be kind, be polite, and be respectful. That is a resolution that will make our world a
better place.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and kind new year.

I would like to wish the West Valley community a Happy New Year! We are fast
approaching the mid-point of the school year as our second quarter marking period will end on
Thursday, January 25th. Many of our students will continue preparing for the administration of
January Regents exams. This year we will again have the opportunity for our 11th grade
students to take the Common Core English exam in January. This provides our students an
additional opportunity to meet this graduation requirement.
Through the month of January, our students will have many opportunities to have solid
educational experiences. Our 10th grade students will attend a tour at Ellicottville CTE center
on January 19th, as this will help them decide their course selections for next school year. A
selected group of 7th grade students will be attending an annual Middle School Leadership
seminar on January 18th at the Dresser Rand Challenger Center.
Our music students will participate in the Cattaraugus County Music Teacher’s
Association Solo Fest the weekend of January 26th . Fourth and fifth grade students will attend
a performance at Arcade Elementary titled Freedom Train on January 19th. Additionally, on
January 19th our PTO will sponsor a “Fun Night” for students in grades PK-5 from 6:00pm to
7:30pm. Finally, on January 26th we will have our 3rd Superintendent Conference day and
there will be no school for students.
